How Hogwarts Came To Be
Born 2004, F, from Darien CT, United StatesIn a land there was a town. In a town there was a house. In a house there were girls. Many, bouncing, playing, whispering and dancing. This was a boarding school for girls. All girls seemed to blend together, except for one. Her name was Jane.
In that same land there was a kingdom. In the kingdom there was a castle. In the castle there was a boy. His name was Merlin.
"Jane, do get up, you'll be late for prayers" begged eight year old Casey.
"No" grumbled Jane, she was in a particularly bad mood this morning. This was because her closest friend at school had just run off and got married. Now she was the oldest in the school. Jane knew she was only seventeen and it would not be suitable for her to be wed for at least another year.
"Jane, Mistress Colloway will be angry. I saw her and she didn't look in a good mood and that will make your punishment all the worst" said Casey.
"Fine, I'm coming" said Jane and got up.
A half an hour later Jane was already falling asleep during lessons. I'm awake, she told herself multiple times, but sill she would fall into a helpless lapse.
"Pay attention Jane" snapped Mistress Colloway, "I was just telling the class we have exciting news"
Now Jane was listening. Any news of any sort meant things could be spiced up. But mostly exciting news meant a new girl.
In Jane's time most boarding schools were really foster homes. It was just easier to say it was school. Most girls had parents who didn't want them or couldn't afford to take care of them, that was usually the case, but some, like Jane's parent were dead or had been missing for all of their child's life.
"Anyway, the exciting news is....we have been invited by the king to visit Camelot" This was probably the last thing Jane expected, Camelot the largest city in the entire kingdom.
"The king said we were the finest school he knew, it's very flattering really"
"When do we go?" asked a girl called Willa.
"Tomorrow" Mistress Colloway practically sang. Jane glared at Casey.
Wow what a bad mood, Jane mouthed. Casey smiled and shrugged her shoulders.
Of the fact that they were going to Camelot tomorrow didn't interfere with fact that lessons were still boring.
Meanwhile, Merlin and his father were arguing.
"I'm twenty, I ought to be wed" Merlin shouted.
"The girls are coming for your brother, nest in line for the throne" said his father.
"But just because I have magic doesn't mean that I have to spend all my days locked up in here. I want a normal life with a family" said Merlin.
"Merlin, you are here with the goodness of my heart. If I wanted I could have cast you out into the streets"
"Then why don't you, it's better than being locked up in here my whole life" spat Merlin.
"Fine, I want you out by sundown tomorrow, you are no longer part of the royal family" said Merlin's father.
Merlin stared at him. "Fine" he said. His father slammed and lock the door. Merlin threw himself down on is bed.
Miles away Jane did the same thing. Mistress Colloway had just told them that the king's son was choosing a girl to be his queen. Jane looked at herself in the small mirror. She had bright red hair and jet green eyes.
He'll never pick me she thought. Then a more encouraging voice said, You are the oldest girl in the school. So there was a small chance Jane would be picked. There was a small chance for her to be picked. There were only one girls going to the king, Sarah-Louisa who was just sixteen.
The next morning the entire school woke up early to go see Camelot. Jane was wearing her best dress, which was red and had a thick white slash. Sarah-Louisa was wearing a blue dress with a black and white waist. Jane was not really competing with Sarah-Louisa. The had been friends until Heather came along, but even then they were still nice to each other. During the long carriage ride, Jane could think of nothing but what would happen if the prince chose her.
At the castle, Merlin was getting ready to leave. He had always hated the castle. Probably because he had been locked up in it so long. It really wasn't fair that he was forced to leave, Merlin thought.
It really would be nice if I got picked, Jane thought as she and Sarah-Louisa walked into the throne room.
It was a lot of standing around and waiting after we curtsied. The prince walked around and inspected us. Jane wanted to ask why he was marring a girl from a simple boarding school, weren't princes supposed to marry princesses.
"I chose her" said the prince, pointing at Sarah-Louisa. Jane's heart sank to my chest. Jane slowly walked out of the throne room, after curtsying one more time. Sarah-Louisa smiled apologetically at me. Jane managed to lift her lips up slightly. She was so busy feeling sorry for myself that Jane didn't notice a boy walking in my direction.
"Got rejected didn't you" he said.
"What, how did" Jane started.
"I'm the kings other son, Merlin" the boy.
"I'm Jane, I didn't know the king had another son" said Jane.
"He pretends he doesn't because I've got magic" Merlin said.
"You do" Jane said. She took a step back.
"Please I won't hurt you, look" Merlin waved his hands and muttered something, a rose.
"Here take it, I promise, it won't hurt you" Merlin said, he held the rose out to her. Jane took it reluctantly, then ran.
Outside she met Mistress Colloway.
"Oh hello Jane, I was looking for you, Sarah-Louisa wants you to stay here and help her prepare for her wedding" said the Mistress.
"Oh, I would love to, but" Jane started to say.
"Are you sure, Sarah-Louisa really wants you" said Mistress Colloway.
Jane said she would stay, but not because of what Mistress Colloway said. While Mistress Colloway was talking, Jane found myself looking at the rose Merlin had given her and Jane felt a funny feeling go up her esophagus.
"Jane, where did you get that" asked Sarah-Louisa, pointing at my rose. I had just come up to her new quarters.
"A boy called Merlin gave it to me" Jane said. Sara-Louisa took the rose out of Jane's hand and threw it into the wast basket.
"You mustn't mix yourself with people of that sort said Sara-Louisa. The thing that bothered Jane about Sarah-Louisa was that she always acted older than Jane, even though it was quite the reverse.
"Hey,that's my rose" said Jane picking it up from the waste basket.
"Suit yourself, he was supposed to leave the city today, but his father got him a room somewhere out of the goodness of his heart" sighed Sarah-Louisa.
"Oh good" Sarah-Louisa raised her eyebrows, ".......for his father" finished Jane.
Jane and Merlin never, ever had much. One of the things Jane never had, but Merlin did was privacy. Jane had always been in a home full of girls and had had scarcely a second by herself. So I will give her this. I will keep the details of the romance between her a Merlin quiet, but there is one crucial part I must tell.
Jane yawned and stretched back on her bed. The wedding was coming up and Sarah-Louisa was getting more and more flustered. Suddenly Jane thought she felt something move. She put her hand on her stomach. Oh no she thought as she rushed to the mirror.
Sure enough Jane knew it, something terrible, yet wonderful. Jane rushed over to Merlin's.
"What looks different" Jane asked, turning sideways. There was a definite bulge.
"Jane, that's wonderful" said Merlin.
"What, but I'm seventeen" said Jane.
"You will be a wonderful mother" said Merlin. He smiled. Jane smiled back, trying to be brave.
It was time, a few months after the wedding Jane was in the town's midwife's home.
"Breathe, Miss, breathe" said the midwife. Merlin held Jane's hand. Jane took one final breath and her eyes closed. A new had begun, but another had ended.
"Jane" said Merlin frantically.
"There is nothing you can do lad" said the midwife, "It is a hard thing child birth. The baby, its a boy"
"I can't. give it up" said Merlin.
"Merlin, are you sure, please don't let this child grow up without a father" the midwife begged.
"I can't raise him without her"
"Will you at least give him a name" asked the midwife as Merlin started to walk away.
"No one can know he is my son, his name is Godric, Godric Gryffandor"
