The Odd One Of The Bunch
F, from Laredo, Texas, United States"Wake up Sonya," her sister Monica told her as she shook her bed. "What's going on?" She responded as she wiped the sleep from her dark brown eyes. Monica looked at her, giving her a shady look, and said, "The town is holding a local dance and mother says we should take you." Sonya could tell that her other two sister's, Jessica and Evelyn, didn't want to take her to this dance in the first place. "I don't feel good" she responded and pulled the covers over her head. Monica looked at her and never bothered to ask her again. For as long as she could remember she had always been the odd one of the bunch. Her sister's were way more beautiful and had men dropping like flies. She on the other hand was always into her own world looking after her elderly mother. She could hear them talking in the kitchen so she headed down there and tried to spark up the conversation. "Oh Sonya you aren't going to the dance after all" Jessica said as she sipped on her coffee. Jessica was wearing a long sky blue dress with her long blonde hair folded neatly in a bun. "No, like I told Monica, I don't feel well" she told them. "That's sad, we really thought you would go" Evelyn said as she lightly bit her toast. Evelyn wore a bright red dress with her dark brown hair in a French roll. "That's real sad Sonya, because anyone of our stature will be there," Monica said as she ate her fruit very delicately. Monica wore a bright pink dress with her hair neatly combed in a French braid.
Time flew by fast and the daughters left to the dance. They never once acknowledged their mother. They were living their lives to the fullest, living their dreams. Sonya and their mother were just stepping stones to them. Sonya felt bad that she couldn't go to the big event. She cried tears of sadness as she put the bucket in the well to fetch water. "Sonya, my dear daughter, what is wrong?" her mother asked. "Nothing mother, don't worry, I will be fine" she responded. She pulled on the wells rope to raise the bucket. "Come now Sonya, a mother always knows when something is wrong. why aren't you at the dance?" She asked. Sonya responded in a trembling voice that she didn't want to go. She told her mother that she'd rather spend the rest of her days with her. Her mother's old tired eyes filled up with tears. she squinted, forcing her old eyes to see Sonya better. "My child, I am not going to be around forever, you must make your life" She told her. Sonya smiled slightly and told het that she would eventually.
Meanwhile at the dance the sisters competed with each other trying to woo the richest entrepreneur there, Christopher Meyers. The man had everything, wealth, looks, and youth. He was white with Sandy Brown hair with blue eyes. People around town said his mother was British though no one knew for sure. Others claim he was a prince in disguise. Speculations arose that the Prince was tired of living in the kingdom and decided to live the rest of his life in exile. "There he is, I am going to go dance with him" Jessica said. "No, I want to go first" Evelyn said. "You both are wrong, it's going to be me" Monica said as she beat them to the punch. "Hello there, My name is Monica, would you care to dance?" she asked the charming man. He gave her a glimpse and after a long pause he agreed. The other two sister's stood on the other side of the room stomping angrily. "Boy he is really young" Evelyn said. Jessica nodded. although they weren't no spring chickens, they were in desperate need of a man like him.
The night ended and the sisters came home empty handed, angry because their dreams of landing a rich entrepreneur were lost. They had made a fool out of themselves and now Christopher would be reluctant to address them again. "I bet if he sees us again he will think we are loons" Evelyn said. The other two agreed as they prepared for bed. Sonya was anxious to know how it went, despite what she heard she still asked, "How did it go?" The girls didn't answer, they just went to sleep.
The following morning Sonya headed to the local pharmacy to buy her mother the medicine she needed. She was walking with her head down so that she didn't see where she was going when she crashed into Christopher. "I am sorry, are you alright miss?" he asked. She nodded slightly and rushed off fast. Christopher was so overwhelmed with curiosity that he followed the stranger around. He followed her around for days, unseen, every time she would come into town. He began asking questions, who was she, and what was her family's background? And he got the answers from the local bartender. He told him her name was Sonya and that she lived in a house just up the hill. Her mother was Miriam Flowers. Her father was a lumber Jack named Richard Kins. The legend goes that Miriam had those three daughters but that a evil witch put a curse on the fourth daughter making her more ugly then the other three. Less fortunate, the circumstances as to why the spell was cast were still unknown.
Christopher kept spying on her. Even though he didn't believe the witch story he knew he had to marry this girl. So one day there was a knock on the door. The other sisters were out on the town like always. Miriam opened the door. "yes" she said. Christopher introduced himself and asked for Sonya. When Sonya came out of her room she saw the man standing there. "Here she is" her mother said. Christopher smiled and told her he had been wanting to tell her something. He knelt down and asked her to marry him. Sonya said yes. they were married the same day. Sonya took her mother to live with her in a big mansion. As for the sisters, whose hearts were filled with vanity, they grew even older and eventually lived out their lives as spinsters, always reminiscing about the man that got away.
When they asked Christopher, now an old man, what attracted him to Sonya, he smiled and said her amazing heart. Beauty is not everything if you have a good heart.
