‘Splash’
Emmi leapt into the freezing water after her little brother. Emmi had little hope of finding him as he had disappeared nearly six minutes ago. Emmi searched through the water like an animal with rabies. Three minutes later Emmi emerged from the water just in time to not suffocate, but Emmi would not give up so quickly, she dove back under and searched until she was sure that Kevin was not there. Emmi forlornly swam back to the dock and dragged herself out of the icy water. Emmi and Kevin had been fishing on the dock when suddenly, as if he had been attacked, Greg slipped majestically off the dock into the wintery depths. Emmi jogged home, her shoulder length auburn hair slapping against the back of her neck, and her olive eyes stinging from the cold water. When Emmi got into her house she snuck into her room and grabbed a backpack and filled it with;
one 15 foot rope, one notebook, two pens, one pencil, her cellphone, headphones, her ipod, one flash light, one change of clothes, a sleeping bag, one water bottle, six granola bars, 80 dollars, and one feather.
Emmi quickly changed into some dry clothes and ran out the door before her dad came home. Not sure where to go, Emmi meandered to the bus stop and got on the bus and sat in a seat right of the isle towards the back. Much to her horror when Emmi took a closer look at the man sitting three seats ahead of her on the left of the isle, she realized it was her dad. Emmi sunk lower into the worn out leather seat. She was silent. At the next stop she rushed off the bus hoping that he would not see her. As she stepped off the bus she glanced around her and saw she was in the rich part of town, with all of the manicured lawns, fancy gates, and mansions. Since when did the bus stop here? As she walked towards the ever present forest she heard a snap and whipped her head around, but nothing was there. As she kept walking she saw something shiny on the ground, she bent down to pick it up, but when her finger touched it the next thing she knew she was hanging upside down by her ankle. She then heard another twig snap and out of the bushes stepped a, what she thought of at the time as a “creature”. The “creature” cackled and said,
“Hello my meal, no, excuse me, I mean child.”
“What do you want?”, Emmi asked.
“I want to make a deal”, he answered.
“No, absolutely unequivocally no” Emmi said.
“Hmmm, not even if that deal could lead you to your brother?” he screeched.
“Fine,” Emmi said, “but first tell me what you want in exchange?”
“Oh nothing much, just your name”, he muttered.
“Alright, but on one condition, no making deals with my brother” Emmi argues.
“Ok!” he cackled.
He snapped his fingers and Emmi was back standing up right. Emmi started to run away, forgetting her deal, but when she stopped and turned around, realizing her mistake when she saw him, she felt herself being pulled through the air, and when she next opened her eyes she was in an abandoned factory probably miles from home. Emmi began to walk forward. She saw a door, ran to it and yanked it open. Before her was a bizarre scene. Above her, standing on a worn out window seat, was Kevin, his silvery blond hair shining in the mid-morning light. Kevin was about to step off the sill when time froze. Out of the shadows stepped the “creature”, and he said, “Now, before anything else happens, what is your name?”
“Emmi,” she replied, “my name is Emmi, now what can I do to help him?”
“Well,” he said slowly, “If you really want to help him you could beg a favor from me, but that would also be at a price.”
“Please! Please help me, I will do anything to help him!” she cried.
“Hmm, if you will do anything, then I will take a memory, of my choice, any memory that I want.”
“Okay, go ahead take one memory, but hurry!”, she shouted.
Emmi felt something cold moving through her memories, suddenly the coldness was gone and she felt an odd emptiness as she looked up at her frozen brother above.
“Alright,” he said, “now I need you to go to the other side of the room, grab the gremlins near the boiling glass and drag them out of the room, also you will need to hurry because once you touch a frozen person they will only remain frozen for three more minutes. Now go before I change my mind!”
“Thank you,” Emmi whispered as she rushed across the room.
When Emmi got to the other side of the room she grabbed the small gremlins and quickly tossed them out the window. Emmi turned around just in time to see the “creature” scuttle up the wall, grab Kevin, and leap down, practically floating. A long 73 and a half seconds later Emmi ran up to Kevin, now unfrozen, and said, “I am never taking you fishing again!”
“That’s fine by me,” Kevin shuddered.
The two of them left the building quickly forgetting the “creature” and caught a cab back to their town, and from there they walked home.
Three months later
Emmi and Kevin were sitting on the dock for the first time in three months, when Kevin said, “Emmi, do you remember when you were six and Dad was teaching you how to swim around the dock, when your favorite silver locket slipped into the water, and we couldn’t find it?"
Then it dawned on her, this was one story she did not remember, this must have been the memory the “creature” had taken, but as she thought really hard a warm feeling spread through her mind and the memory flooded back.
“Yes,” Emmi whispered, “I do remember.”
As soon as Emmi was done talking Kevin stood up and dove into the murky water, but before Emmi could do anything Kevin resurfaced holding something silver in his hand. Then he said, “You know after you lost this Dad and I came back for weeks to look for it. Who knew I would find it under the dock nine years later?”
“Well,” Emmi answered, “this is certainly unexpected.”
Kevin handed Emmi the necklace. She took it and gently opened it, after years under the lake it was very fragile. Inside was a picture of Emmi and Kevin when they were five and six. In the picture they were smiling and sunburned, as if there were no worries in life, as if the world was simple, as if siblings are best friends, and life is meant to be enjoyed. Looking at the picture Emmi realized that maybe life did not have to be complicated, maybe it was meant to just be enjoyed. Then Emmi reached over and gave Kevin a hug and said, “Thank you, this means a lot to me.”
“No problem,” Kevin replied.
Emmi reached over and dropped the locket around Kevin’s neck and said, “I want you to have this to remind you of when we were little and life was as simple as being happy.”
