IMMORTAL LOVE
In the mid 40’s independence days, in West Bengal, there was a village Chandanpur, where Srinath Chaudhari and his beautiful well accomplished daughter Manvi lived. Manvi was about sixteen years old and Srinathji was middle aged. He was known as Kaka in his village, we will also call him Kaka.
Kaka was a very respectable farmer with acres of land, lot of orchards and cowsheds. He loved helping his villagers financially and to Manvi’s despair he never asked them to return whatever he gave. Kaka was a very good looking handsome man who looked very aristocratic. He had lovely blue eyes, salt pepper hair, but on his forehead he had a big scar, quite visible, that was there since birth and he often wondered about it.
Manvi was a little dusky, like her mother, with big brown eyes and fairly long straight hair. She wanted to study, but due to the early demise of her mother she could not as she had to look after her “Baba”, whom she loved dearly. Father and daughter had an amazing chemistry.
Manvi was an excellent cook. She loved to keep the house clean. Whoever came to their house never left without eating and taking a gift, which Manvi used to make with her own hands, and keep many things ready, be it things of wood, paintings, embroidered sheets or even homemade knitted sweaters. The whole village used to sing her praises and she was loved by everyone.
Kaka used to be busy the whole day, so he only saw Manvi in the evening. One day while returning from his farms, he saw light in the abandoned hut, where nobody stayed. Kaka thought to himself, 'Who could it be? Someone is definitely there.' He went across to the hut, the door was slightly open, he pushed the door, and to his surprise, a white haired swami was sitting and smiling at him. The swami said, “Come in Srinath”. Kaka was totally astonished, he bowed down in respect, and with folded hands asked the swami the reason of his arrival in their village and how he knew his name was “Srinath”.
Swamiji smiled at him and said he had come all the way from Haridwar just to meet him, as swamiji knew about Kaka’s large-heartedness, from his close disciples and especially kaka’s younger brother.
“I need your help, we are making a new temple of Kali Maa, and also an ashram, for which we need monetary help. Srinath, you are one person who will not disappoint me. I need about rupees five lakhs from you”. On hearing this kaka’s face dropped and he was totally shocked. Swamiji saw this, and asked him “any problem?” Kaka smiled and said “I will try my best and return to you in two days”.
Kaka came out of the hut very worried. The sun had set, it was a quiet cold evening. Manvi was worried and wondered, 'What is taking Baba so long, he is never so late?' She went to fetch him and on the way she saw him coming and heaved a sigh of relief. “What took you so long Baba? Where were you? Baba tell me why are you looking so worried, what happened?” Kaka fondly smiled at her and said “Nothing beti, nothing to worry about”, but Manvi was sure there was something about which her father was worried, but what?
While they were having dinner of fish curry and rice that night, kaka told Manvi about the swamiji and his request. Manvi was shocked and asked kaka “Where will so much money come from?” Kaka told her that he will get it from his younger brother who lived in the next village. He had his money and he would go the next morning.
Next day Manvi packed some eatables and water for kaka and said, "take care Baba, and come home soon”. On his way to Janakpur he stopped near a river to wash, eat and rest. While he was sitting under a tree, a big black cobra bit him. He screamed in pain and ran towards the river and slipped on the rocky steps. His head hit one of the steps and he became unconscious. When he woke up, he was in the swami’s hut and Manvi was sitting beside him.
Kaka was looking normal; he seemed to be in a trance. He said “this snake incident has happened with me before also, long back when I was a prince by the name of Kartekeya and my kingdom consisted of 100 villages”. Manvi felt Baba had gone mad. These things did not happen, it was unbelievable. Swamiji told Manvi what her father was saying was true, because he was a priest in his kingdom. Manvi was shocked. “How do you know all this swamiji?” Manvi asked. swamiji said, “I have some parts of Brighu (the book where every human beings past, present and future is written) which is a proof. He was a very popular prince of his kingdom, and madly in love with his second cousin, princess Manorama, also called Manu. Incidentally, kaka fondly used to call her Manvi! They used to stay in the same palace, but Manu’s stepmother did not approve of the marriage because she wanted her nephew to get married to Manu. Kartekeya and Manu were childhood lovers.”
Manvi got a little excited about the whole thing and was very keen to know who the Princess was? Whether she was alive or dead and also her whereabouts? Swamiji seemed to know everything, but when Manvi showered these questions he was quiet and appeared to be in a fix about the consequences if he would reveal the truth. Manvi kept pestering swamiji for days, but he was tongue tied.
After some days kaka was totally cured from the snake bite and fever. Now he remembered everything of his past life and had an urge to know where Manu was. swamiji returned to Haridwar without taking the money and without disclosing Manu’s whereabouts.
Life went on for Kaka and Manvi without many problems. One day Kaka returned home and what did he see?! Manvi was shivering like a leaf, he touched her forehead, and at once he removed his hand, she was burning. In a short while the whole village was at kaka’s house, all looking depressed as though it was the end of their world.
Every possible treatment was done, but alas! Nothing seemed to work. Then one day in her semi conscious state, Manvi called out, “Kartekeya, O Kartekeya, please get those medicinal herbs from Chandi Hills. I will be cured at once and then we will get married”. Everyone was aghast. So she was kartekeya’s Manu, the villagers thought. Kaka was in a state of shock and distress, Manvi was unaware about all this.
Kaka, along with some villagers, immediately left for Chandi Hills, to get the herbs, so that her life could be saved.
When they reached the top of the hills, kaka told the villagers that this was where a snake had bitten him, and he was pushed down into the gushing water of the Ganga, in his previous life. Princess Manu also had high fever and her stepmother insisted he got the herbs. it was a well planned move by her. The scar on the forehead was because of that fall.
They brought back the herbs and in some days Manvi limped back to normalcy and remembered her past. The once happy home was now filled with darkness. Both father and daughter were in a fix with mixed emotions.
Soon a panchayat sat to discuss this big problem, which had never ever occurred in the village. After much discussion Kaka said, “Let bygones be bygones. It is a miracle that happened. Our love had such a strong bonding that if we did not meet then, we have spent this life with contentment and happiness to the fullest.” Manvi fondly smiled at her Baba and fully agreed with whatever he said. Panchayat was dismissed. They happily continued their lives.
After two years, kaka married Manvi to a rich young zamindar, who loved her dearly. Kaka led a quiet retired life and whenever Anando Chatopadhaya and Manvi came he was very happy. After a year of marriage Manvi had twins, a girl and a boy, whom Anando named Kartekeya and Manorama unknowingly.
Anando was a very understanding and a loving husband and a doting father. Soon he started managing kaka’s affairs and they all stayed together.
Later Swamiji told Manvi and kaka that Satyen was the same nephew of Manu’s stepmother who wanted to marry her, he was none other then Anando in this life and Manvi’s present husband. Well this is destiny and no body can fight with this…!
