Case 35 - A Cop and a Crook
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United StatesInspector Susie Young was at a residence on Mason Street to execute a warrant. She knocked on the door and no one answered. She knocked on the door again and no response. Instead of calling for backup she drew her service revolver and made entry into the house. She found the suspect in front of the door laying in a pool of blood. In the shadow was a figure holding a revolver pointed at Susie. “Drop your weapon!” shouted Susie. The person continued to keep the revolver aimed at her and she opened fire. The person in the shadow walked off.
Inspector J.P. Bullet, Harvey Lucas, Dowzer the robotic police dog, and Command Officer Rachel McCabe arrived on the scene. “Tell me what happened,” said Rachel. “I made entry into the house and I found Laverne on the floor by the door and there was somebody standing over there”. Susie pointed towards the room where she saw the subject with the revolver. “I ordered him to drop the weapon. He refused to drop it and I fired at the suspect and missed. Then he just walked off,” said Susie. While Susie was giving her statement, Harvey and J.P. were examining the crime scene. “All the shell casings are from Susie’s gun,” said Harvey.
J.P. walked into the room where Susie saw the suspect. J.P. found another shell casing from Susie’s gun. He bent down and put the casing into an evidence bag and marked where he found it. Rachel came into the room. “What do you think?” asked Rachel. J.P. sighed. “The part where she said that she saw someone in this room does not add up,” said J.P. “What do you mean?” asked Rachel. If someone was standing where Susie said she saw them, she would have hit them,” said J.P. showing her where he found the shell casing. J.P. and Rachel continued to search the room but found no evidence of anyone else being in the house.
Captain Graves was taking Susie Young’s statement. Rachel walked up to where they were talking. Captain Graves finished taking Susie’s statement and started taking photos of the crime scene. “Susie, until further notice you are suspended,” said Rachel.
Rachel came into the detective office. “I just got the report from the M.E. Laverne died from a gunshot wound to the chest. The bullets match the type of gun that Susie carries,” said Rachel. “Wait a minute. Susie would not shoot an unarmed man,” said J.P. “I don’t believe she would either, unfortunately there is enough evidence to arrest her. Rebella you and Conner go pick her up,” said Rachel. Rebella and Conner got up and left the detective office. “I need to do something right quick,” said J.P. taking his car keys out of his pocket. Inspector Tina Bullet got out of her chair and was putting her jacket on. “Stay here,” said J.P. as he was walking out of the office.
J.P. was driving down the road. He took out his cell phone and called Susie. “They are coming to arrest you, get out of town,” said J.P. He disconnected the call and cleared it off of his cell phone.
J.P. returned to the 169th Precinct with roses for Tina. “These are for you,” said J.P. handing Tina the roses. “Oh! They are so beautiful,” said Tina. “Not as beautiful as you are,” said J.P. kissing her on the cheek. Tina started blushing.
Rebella and Conner returned to the Precinct without Susie. “She was not there,” said Rebella. “We need to find her. Rebella, go in Chopper One and Start an air search. Oscar, you and Conner will do a ground search,” said Rachel. Rebella, Oscar, and Conner left the detective office.
Susie went into a bar to get something to eat and drink. “They would never think to look for me here,” thought Susie as she sat down at the bar. Sitting beside Susie was a middle aged woman by the name of Stephanie Misdemeanor. Stephanie was a thief and worked for Brandon Bobel before he was arrested. “You look awfully familiar,” said Stephanie to Susie. “Oh great, she is going to figure out who I am and I will really be in a mess,” thought Susie. She tried to ignore Stephanie. Then Stephanie recognized her. “Wait a minute, you are that cop they are looking for that killed Laverne Preston,” said Stephanie. Susie did not say anything as she was trying to figure out how to get out of the predicament that she was in. “I don’t believe you killed him. I think it is that dirty cop Charles Bernard,” said Stephanie. “I wish there was someway I could get that name to J.P.” said Susie. “I would call him for you but I have warrants for my arrest,” said Stephanie. Susie started thinking about calling J.P. herself but realized she could get him in trouble because he had tipped her off about being arrested. “I tell you what, normally, I don’t help police, but I am going to this one time,” said Stephanie taking out her cell phone. She called Brandon’s former butler Squeaks. “Squeaks, this is Stephanie Misdemeanor. I have a job for you. I need you to go to the 169th Precinct and leave a note for Inspector J.P. Bullet with the name Charles Bernard,” said Stephanie hanging up her cell phone.
Squeaks went into the 169th Precinct. He went to the dispatch office. “Can I help you?” asked Ola. “Yes, I need you to give J.P. a note with the name Charles Bernard,” Said Squeaks. Ola wrote the name down. “Inspector Bullet is in the office, I can call him to come up here and talk to you,” said Ola. “Oh no, I don’t need to see him I just needed to give him that name,” said Squeaks as he was turning around to leave the precinct. “That has got to be the oddest little man I have ever encountered,” thought Ola.
J.P., Tina, and Rachel were in the detective office. The telephone rang and Tina answered it. “Would you give J.P. the name Charles Bernard. This odd little man came in and told me to give J.P. that name,” said Ola. “I will give him the message,” said Tina hanging up the phone. “J.P., that was Ola, she said that someone came in and told her to give you the name Charles Bernard. “Who’s that?” asked Rachel. “He is a hot head from the 189th Precinct. He applied to be a detective in the Special Investigation Division and Susie Young was selected instead of him,” said J.P. “Is he hot headed enough to get even with Susie by framing her for murder?” asked Rachel. J.P. thought for a moment. “He darn well could be,” said J.P. Rachel picked up the phone and called Ola. “Contact Oscar, Conner, and Rebella and advise them to stand down,” said Rachel. She hung up the phone. “J.P. you and Tina go question Charles Bernard, said Rachel.
J.P. and Tina went to the 189th Precinct. To their surprise Stephanie Misdemeanor and Susie Young were in his office. They stood out in the hall and listened. “All right, we know you killed Laverne Preston and are trying to frame Susie,” said Stephanie. “I don’t know what you are talking about, but I know this, you two are nothing but criminal scum trying to find a way to get out of trouble by making false accusations,” said Charles. J.P. knocked on the door. “Is there a problem?” asked J.P. “I caught these two scumbags and they are making false accusations,” said Charles. “Let me guess, they are accusing you of murdering Laverne Preston,” said J.P. “That's right and I am going to make sure they are sent up for a long time,” said Charles.
“You know what, I bet if we pulled the logs you would be on duty the day that Laverne died. Which means you had an alibi,” said J.P. Tina handed J.P. the copy of the log sheet. J.P. started reading. “Right here you checked on duty at 0652 hours. There is just one problem - you checked out on break around the time that Laverne died and then checked back in service about an hour later. I know you are going to tell me that you were eating lunch, so why don’t you tell me where you went to eat so that I can call and verify you were there,” said J.P. “I dare you! Coming into my precinct and believing two criminals!” shouted Charles. J.P. did not say a word. “For all I know Stephanie Misdemeanor helped her kill Laverne Preston,” said Charles. J.P. stood there blank as he had hoped to get a confession.
Tina had an idea to make Charles confess. “I guess when they selected Susie Young over you, it peeved you off severely. I mean you have been a cop for what, maybe 10 years or so, and they hired someone who had just graduated the academy,” said Tina. “I have been a detective for 13 years and it severely peeved me off that they hired Susie Young. That no good drug dealer Laverne Preston told lies on me and caused me not to get the position and then he was fixing to ruin my career here so I had to shut him up,” said Charles, realizing he had just implicated himself. Tina pulled out her hand cuffs and handed the cuffs to Susie. “I will let you do the honors,” said Tina. “Charles Bernard, you are under arrest for the murder of Laverne Preston,” said Susie. She handcuffed Charles Bernard and Tina escorted him to the car.
Susie hugged Stephanie. “Thank you for your help,” said Susie. “Knock it off, I don’t like being hugged, especially by a cop,” said Stephanie. J.P. started walking off. Susie had a confused look on her face. J.P. turned around. “Are you coming?” asked J.P. “Aren’t you going to arrest Stephanie?” asked Susie. “For what?” asked J.P. “She has warrants,” said Susie. “They are out of another precinct so they are somebody else’s problem,” said J.P.
Charles Bernard was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison. For her assistance to the police, Stephanie Misdemeanor was put on probation rather than serving jail time.
