Case 29 - The Wedding
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United StatesCaptain Graves came into the detective’s office. “I have some bad news. The mayor is cutting the department’s budget. To make a long story short, we are going to close down the Special Investigation Division,” said Captain Graves. Everyone was in shock. “I am sorry guys, I did everything I could to save the Special Investigation Division,” he said, turned around and left the office.
“I guess it is time to get some boxes and start packing,” sighed Inspector Tina Cassidy. “Surely there is some way to change the mayor’s mind,” said Inspector Susie Young. “Most of the time when he makes a decision, he rarely changes his mind,” said Inspector J.P. Bullet.
After Tina got off work, she was sitting on the couch going through a wedding magazine. Her robotic dog Dowzer was lying beside her feet. J.P. came over and knocked on the door. Dowzer got up and started barking. “Who is it?” asked Tina. “J.P.” J.P. answered. Tina got up and unlocked the door. They walked to the living room holding hands and sat down on the couch together. J.P. put his arm around Tina. “I was trying to come up with some ideas for a very inexpensive wedding since neither of us has a job,” said Tina. J.P. kissed her on the cheek. “We don’t have to have a church wedding, as far as I am concerned we could do it in front of the judge with a few friends and our family,” said J.P. “I know, but this is the only time I am getting married because I am going to love you in sickness and in health till death do us part. So, I would really like to have something a little bit nicer,” said Tina. “Don’t worry, we will figure something out,” said J.P.
Inspector Rebella Howard went to C.V.’s Restaurant. “May I take your order?” asked the waitress. “I would like to speak to C.V.” said Rebella. The waitress went and got C.V. for Rebella. He could see in Rebella’s face that something was wrong. “What’s the matter, honey?” Asked C.V. “They shut down the Special Investigation Division due to budget cutbacks and now I am without a job. I was wondering if you had an opening for a waitress until I could do better?” asked Rebella. “I could use someone to help run the bar from two o’clock until closing time,” said C.V. He went to the back room and got Rebella an employment application. She took the application over to an empty table, filled it out, and turned it back in. “You will start tomorrow afternoon,” said C.V.
Inspector Susie Young went into Captain Graves’ office. “Captain, are there any openings in the patrol division?” asked Susie. Captain Graves sighed. “I am sorry Susie, there are no openings. We had to do cutbacks in the Patrol Division and there is barely enough personnel to cover the city,” said Captain Graves. “Thank you, sir” said Susie, discouraged, because she wanted to continue to have a career in law enforcement. She got up and was fixing to leave Captain Gray’s office. “You could apply to be a reserve,” said Captain Graves reaching for a file folder and taking out an application. He handed it to Susie. She took the application and walked out of Captain Graves’ office. “This is what I hate about this job,” said Captain Graves to himself.
J.P. and Tina went to C.V.’s Restaurant for a late lunch. Tina tapped J.P. on the shoulder. “Is that Rebella tending the bar?” asked Tina. “It sure as heck is,” said J.P. “Let’s go over there and at least say hi,” said Tina. J.P. and Tina went to the bar, sat down and started talking to Rebella.
Susie was driving down the road. She had applied at numerous places trying to find a job. She saw the mayor’s daughter crossing the street. “If you only knew what a jackass your father was,” thought Susie to herself. She got the green light and was fixing to go when all of a sudden a delivery van ran the red light. The passenger opened the door and grabbed the mayor’s daughter. Susie saw the abduction and started following the van. “I wish I had my police radio with me,” said Susie. Taking out her cell phone, she had numbers programmed in her phone where all she had to do was scroll down until she found the person she wanted to call. She intended to call the precinct but the number she was on was J.P.’s cell phone.
Captain Graves came into C.V.’s restaurant and sat down beside J.P. and Tina. They were talking to Rebella when J.P.’s cell phone started ringing. J.P. answered the phone. “This is Susie Young, the mayor’s daughter has just been abducted. I am northbound on General Lee Road following the suspects. I need back-up,” said Susie and she hung up without realizing that she had called J.P. instead of the Precinct. “Who was it?” asked Tina. “It was Susie, the mayor’s daughter has just been abducted and she needs back-up,” said J.P. “J.P. Tina, Rebella go to the precinct and get your gun and badge. They are in my office,” said Captain Graves handing J.P. the key.
J.P., Tina and Rebella had got their badges and guns and were in the parking lot fixing to get in their car when Officers Jefferson; Blue; and Lockhart pulled up. They had just cleared a call. “What’s going on,” said Officer Jefferson as he was getting out of his car. “The mayor’s daughter has been abducted and Susie Young needs back-up. Captain Graves told us to get our badges and guns and back her up,”said J.P. “We will back you up,” said Officer Jefferson motioning for them to get in the police car. “Tina you ride with Officer Blue; Rebella you ride with Officer Lockhart; and I will ride with Officer Jefferson,” said J.P.
Susie followed the delivery truck, and they turned off onto Loop Road. Instead of turning she went straight and stopped at the overpass. “Where in the heck is my backup?” Susie wondered. She took out her phone while she waited for the delivery truck. “Crap! I called J.P. Instead of the Precinct”. She knew she had a few minutes so she called the Precinct. “This is Susie Young, I am on Loop Road and I need back-up,” she said.
Melody Hopkins wrote down the information and got on the radio. “All Units in the vicinity of Loop Road, 5-George 36 is requesting back-up,” said Melody. Officers Jefferson heard the call on the radio. “Dispatch, this is 1-Adam 127 be advised that I will be enroute to that location with 1-Adam 133 and 1-Adam 142; along with 5-George 31; 5-George 32; and 5-George 35,” said Officer Jefferson. Melody acknowledged she had received officer Jefferson’s traffic.
Susie saw the delivery truck coming. “If Rebella can do this, I can too,” said Susie jumping off the bridge and onto the delivery truck. She carefully made her way to the passenger side knowing that she could be seriously injured if she made one wrong move.
The driver saw the police right behind him with their lights and sirens on. He started driving faster and Susie almost fell. She managed to hold on and opened the passenger side door. The passenger in the truck tried to shove her, but she managed to hold on and unbuckled him. She pulled him out of the delivery van and he landed hard on the pavement.
Officer Jefferson continued following the delivery truck. Officer Blue along with Tina pulled over to arrest the suspect. Tina motioned for Officer Lockhart and Rebella to follow Officer Jefferson and J.P.
Susie got in the passenger seat and closed the door. “You are under arrest,” said Susie to the driver. The driver unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the door, and jumped from the moving vehicle. Susie moved over to the driver’s seat and brought the delivery truck to a stop. Officer Jefferson arrested the driver.
J.P. and Tina were at the judge’s office waiting for him to come in. “Sorry, you could not do your dream wedding,” said J.P. “That’s ok,” said Tina with a sigh. Captain Graves and the mayor came up where they were sitting. “I want to personally thank the members of the Special Investigation Division for rescuing my daughter. The Special Investigation Division is an asset to the community and I have decided that I am not going to cut funding to the 169th Precinct, we will make budget cuts elsewhere,” said the mayor. “All of you are now reinstated,” said Captain Graves. “All Right!” said Tina. “Now I understand that the two of you are getting married, and you wanted a church wedding and could not afford it,” said the mayor. “Yes sir,” said Tina. “I will take care of that,” said the mayor.
Captain Graves was preparing for the wedding. He had planned for officers to line the aisle and stand at attention. Captain Baldwin from the 467th Precinct came into his office. “I heard that two of you officers were getting married and I wanted to let you know that if you needed assistance, we would help cover your area,” said Baldwin. Captain Graves thought for a moment. “What if we lined up on the left side aisle and your officers lined up on the right side? That way I would not have all my resources tied up,” said Captain Graves. Captain Baldwin thought it was a good idea.
Tina’s father opened the door and walked her down the aisle as the music started to play. Then J.P. and Tina exchanged vows.
