I never thought I would end up like this. I sighed heavily and it took a great effort. I leant on the well's wall and waited for it to fill. Mother had been right. I closed my eyes and waited for everything to end. The pain was unbearable, and I longed for it to end. It was hard to imagine that just a few hours ago I had been outside my house playing with Margaret, my little sister. I smiled mentally at the thought, since smiling physically took more effort than I was capable of now. I remembered her giggles and her cute dimples that made me smile. Her long blond curls that reached her tiny waist. Her porcelain skin that always made her look like one of those dolls Mother used to bring me when I was younger. Today had been my last day with them. I was leaving my beloved London, to go to the sunny New York. The boat would be leaving by now. I forced my eyes to look at what was left of the beautiful silk-blue dress Mother had made for me. It was in shreds. I remembered those men's faces and I mentally flinched from the horror. I had been playing with my beloved little Margaret when Mother asked me to come inside so Anastacia, my maid, could fix my hair in my favorite type of braid. She took my long, straight, black hair in her expert hands and had it done in minutes. I went to the pond that was near our house for the last time. When I got there I stared at my reflection and smiled at it. My milky-white skin, my bright green eyes and my long black hair. Staring at my eyes I remembered Pete. That traitor. I wanted to snarl, but I couldn't, not even mentally, I was too tired even for that. I just tried to continue with my happy memories, so at least I could die happily. After leaving the pond, I took the carriage that would take me to the Port, where the boat was waiting. Still, the boat wasn't the only one waiting. Pete was there too. He had been my best friend since he moved in and became my neighbor, even though Father's estate was so large, we didn't exactly live near each other. He smiled at me and hugged me good-bye. He invited me to a walk, which I accepted, but regret it with my whole soul. We went to a dark place where he let go of my hand, which he had been holding, the whole time. ''Pete'' I had shouted, waiting for a response. I had felt some other hands instead of his. ''Pete!'' I screamed harder, knowing it was useless, the place had been deserted when we had first entered. ''I'm sorry Dorothy. But it was either me or you. I had to choose you.'' Choose me? He was really selfish, always had been, but I just had been too blind to see what he really was. With that, I don't know what I can call it, since I'm sure it wasn't an apology, he left me, where some men took me, tearing apart my dress, touching me, holding me, kissing me. I was horrified, I shouted one or two times, but stopped, deciding I wouldn't give them that pleasure of hearing my agony. After they finished up with me they left me, or should I say, threw me, in the well. They left me bleeding and hurt. Badly hurt. I don't think that anyone would ever be able to recognize me again. And I really didn't want to be recognized or found ever again. My dignity is lost. I wanted to sob, but there weren't tears left. ''Ms. Carrington! Ms. Carrington!'' I almost thought I could hear Anastacia's voice. I must be imagining it. But it was coming closer ''Ms. Carrington!'' Was I really imagining it? I wasn't sure ''Mary! Please! Where are you?'' Was that mother? She sounded as if she was crying, or at least sobbing. ''Medy? Medy? Whed ad you?'' Now I was sure. That was Margarete. My poor little four-year old. She could barely talk. Last week had had been her fourth birthday. Mother had made a huge Dinner with almost half the City. The major, and all of the most rich people. ''Mary Dorothea Carrington! Where are you? Please answer!'' That was...Father? Father!!! I wanted to run to him, hug him and cry on his shoulders. I could almost never see him, he was always traveling. ''Dorothy!'' Who was that? I tried to remember that voice ''Dorothy'' The voice was coming closer, it was a man, that was for sure, and he was coming closer. Who was he? ''Dorothy!'' he continued exclaiming until he came really near the well. I was sure. I think he must be just over me. The well was not so deep. I moaned as loud as I could, hoping he would be able to hear me. ''I found her! I found her!'' he cried, and I smiled a little bit. Margarete's presence had given me strength. Enough strength to let them know where I was. ''Medyy!'' Margaret shouted. she jumped over me ''Come over here Margie'' Father said, and I heard the weight lift from the wooden thing that was covering the well. Little by little I could see some sun rays. Someone was moving the wooden thing. Sun? How much time have I been down here? Just the way you imagine an angel I saw the man who owned the unknown voice. My rescuer. But I couldn't see him. Not all of him, because of the sun. I could only see his eyes, hazel eyes. Hazel. Eyes. My eyelids were closing. My last conscious thought was simple: Hazel. Eyes. And everything went dark.
