Forever Lost
Born 1990, M, from Blantyre, MalawiFOREVER LOST
By Mike Kaupembe
"It only takes a tiny spark of hope to light the fire that sets you free. Don't give up!" The resonant voice echoed in my mind, a beacon of light in my darkest hour. I had reached a crossroads in my life, where every path seemed to lead to a dead end.
It was the sweltering summer of 2015 when my journey began. Fresh out of college, I roamed the streets of Blantyre, searching for a job to kickstart my future. One sunny morning, exhausted from a long and fruitless trek, I sought refuge under the shade of a majestic mango tree. The gentle breeze carried the sweet melodies of birds, and the lush foliage of the tree's branches seemed to whisper words of encouragement.
As I sat there, feeling the weight of my struggles, a stranger approached me.
"Moyenda, Chidziwitso Moyenda," he said with a gentle smile, extending his hand in greeting.
"I can see the weight of the world bearing down on you, my friend. Your eyes tell a story of exhaustion and uncertainty. I think we share a common bond, for I too have wandered through life's labyrinth, unsure of which path to take or who to trust."
"What's your story?" he asked, his tone gentle yet piercing. I gazed at the stranger once more, my eyes still hesitant. But his warm smile and understanding eyes put me at ease. There was something about him that radiated kindness and compassion, making me feel like I could trust him with my deepest secrets. His eyes seemed to hold a depth of wisdom, as if he had seen the struggles of the world and still chose to smile.
After I had poured out my heart, sharing the story of my struggles, Moyenda offered a reassuring smile. "You will find a job, my friend," he said, his voice filled with conviction. "I know the pain of knocking on doors, only to be met with rejection. But I might have a lead for you. I know a wealthy woman who could potentially help you out...if you're willing to take the necessary steps to meet her."
Moyenda's words trailed off, leaving me curious and wondering what he meant by "necessary steps". His enigmatic tone only added to my intrigue, and I found myself pondering what lay ahead.
Madam Chikho, affectionately known as the enigmatic "Cash-queen," was a woman of immense wealth and mystery. Her vast fortune was the subject of much speculation, with some believing she had influential connections with high-ranking politicians, while others whispered about her alleged involvement in illicit and shady dealings. Despite the uncertainty surrounding her sources of income, I was willing to overlook the rumors and seek her assistance, driven by my desperation and determination to improve my circumstances.
"I can make you a billionaire in the blink of an eye, but I won't sugarcoat the truth. There's a condition attached to my offer." Madam Chikho's words were laced with an air of mystery.
"I'm willing to do anything you ask, Madam," I replied, my voice trembling with excitement. I felt an esoteric sense of hope, as if I had finally found my guardian angel.
"Five years have passed since I made the fateful decision to accept Madam Chikho's offer. While I now possess everything I once desired, I find myself tormented by a lingering sense of unease. The weight of my choice haunts me, and I'm consumed by doubt. Did I make a deal with my soul? Peace of mind eludes me, and redemption seems an unattainable dream. Pray for me.
