The Stone Hallway
Born 1996, F, from Abbotsford, BC, CanadaHello. I am an archeologist. I am travelling to my most recent find with my crew. When we arrived, the other half of my team had already cleared away all the little artifacts, and categorized them. I walked around giving them their next set of assignments.
I then heard someone yell, “Out of the way!” After that, a huge chunk of rock came crashing down upon us. I jumped to the side, but my foot didn't get enough traction and I tumbled down the hill. I lay there unconscious until the sun retreated. Then, I awoke.
I found myself standing in front of a large stone door. It had been overtaken with green vines that strangled its every joint. The leaves reached out threatening to grab hold of my arm at any given moment. I found a small crack in the looming stone door just large enough for me to squeeze through. Behind the doors was a long, massive, dark and silent hallway. I walked along the path and all I heard was the echo of my own footsteps. Out of nowhere candles on the left and right of me lit up each time I took a step. Then a melody that was gentle but ghostly at the same time resounded through the hall. An organ was following the end of the melody and it was sort of a desperate organ, challenging me to find it. Find it is what I did. At the end of the hallway, there was a large stone room. In the middle was a gigantic organ. All I saw from where I had entered were its many pipes. I slowly waltzed around it, while its gasping tunes called out to me. On the other side was a....well, not human anyway, but a being of what looked to be like a collection of light beams in the shape of a human. It slowed down its beat and the melody came back. It played from what sounded like the roof of the room, and the instrument playing it was not a physical thing, but rather a great many wisp like things. They swirled and danced in sorrow to the crying rhythm.
“Please...” They whispered. “Stop...do not harm us any further. We are the last remaining life in this place, and even though you can't see us we are still here. Let us live in peace.”
Then, I found myself standing in front of the large stone door. It happened in a flash. I was there, wherever there was, and now I was here, wherever here is. A few voices shook my mind and I turned around to see my fellow comrades.
After the whole ordeal, I stopped the dig and resigned. I lived a wealthy life with a family I loved. But sometimes, I would go back to the stone doors. But never again did I see the ghostly interments.
Finally, at my dying years, I returned for what would be my last time to the stone doors. I crawled in the small crack in the looming stone door just big enough for me. As I walked down the hall, the haunting melody returned. I entered the stone room, and looked up. The wisps came down and surrounded me. In the middle, where I was, was also the being of light.
The being of light took me in his arms, and whispered “Are you ready?” I nodded my head. My last memory of the living was the wisps gently lifting me away, like a cloud of pure crystal.
The next morning, I got news of my grandmother. They said that all they found was her clothing in a huge stone room, and nothing else. I mourn the loss of my grandmother. But perhaps I can find out more about her fate....
