Diana's Dragon
Born 2023, F, from Moncton, CanadaIt was the hottest day of summer. As the sun set, the heat became unbearable. Cars that usually stood shining were dusty and the usual bright green grass was slightly withered.
The inhabitants of Whingingham Drive had left their windows open to catch the occasional breeze.
A little house stood at the very end of the street. It looked just like all the other houses in the square. It had the same roof and backyard, and even the cars looked alike.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilson were perfectly happy to say that they were fine, thank you very much. They had everything they needed.
Mr. Wilson was a vet and worked in a veterinary called Jumpy Paws. He had worked there for over 10 years and had much experience with animals.
“Diana!” Called Mrs. Wilson from the kitchen, “Lily! Dinner’s ready."
"I'm coming Mother,” said Diana, running down 3 steps at a time.
“Diana, wait for me!” Cried, Lily, running after her twin sister
The girls flew down the stairs and ran to the kitchen. It was highly polished as usual; there were never any dirty dishes in the sink as Mrs. Wilson had already scrubbed them clean.
Mr. Wilson was already at the table and Mrs. Wilson prepared the salad.
Diana sat down beside her father and put the napkin on her lap.
Lily was standing on her toes to get the cat food.
After a while, Mrs. Wilson and Lily settled down, and the family started eating.
“So how was everyone’s day?” asked Mr. Wilson “Lily?”
“Dreadful,” said Lily. “Samantha Wolf told the whole class that I am a witch and when I said I was not, she pointed out that witches have green eyes.”
"How rude!" exclaimed Mrs. Wilson
"That's right," said Lily in a sort of bored tone. "Then Samantha started laughing and everyone joined in."
Mr. Wilson shook his head. "That's not acceptable behaviour," he said.
“And Mrs. Ginger gave me detention every morning for two weeks because Samantha broke her snow globe " Lily poked her shrimp. “What a wonderful time for our birthday.”
“I suppose my day was not bad at all," Diana said, giggling.
“Oh really, you think it’s funny do you?” Lily snapped at her.
“I...What...No I don’t” Diana spluttered looking shocked.
“Now Lily,” Mr. Wilson said with a warning look “I know you’ve had a bad day but that does not allow you to behave rudely with your sister."
“Lily, kindly apologize to Diana," said Mrs. Wilson.
“Sorry Diana” mumbled Lily
“I guess it’s fine,” said Diana in a dignified voice, “
They ate quietly for a while as Pearl and Mittens the house cats sneaked into the kitchen.
All of a sudden, the white, furry tabby cats leaped on the counter and sent the pots and pans askew, making a loud noise, which scared the small family.
Mr. Wilson yelped, Mrs. Wilson sent her spoon flying, Diana ducked to avoid contact with the metal spoon and Lily jumped and fell off her seat.
When all the confusion was over, Diana set Pearl in the living room with her food bowl, and Lily took Mittens to her room but the cats didn't mind.
“Oh Pearl” sighed Diana, stroking the fluffy cat. “Why are you so naughty sometimes?”
Diana left Pearl alone and strode into the kitchen. It looked neat and orderly again. The family sat down once again and this time managed to eat in peace.
After dinner, Mr. Wilson went upstairs to watch the news and Diana and Lily cleaned up the table while Mrs. Wilson washed the dishes. Diana noticed that she was shaking but when she tried to ask her about it Mrs. Wilson quickly coughed and asked Diana if she could please polish the table and chairs.
Diana reported this strange behavior to Lily who tried to act coldly but failed to do that.
“Keep quiet” Lily hissed. “We’ll discuss it in our room."
Diana frowned. 'Since when did Lily start being responsible?' She thought as she scrubbed the chairs with the wood polisher (Miss Penny Feather’s Finest Wood Polish).
She didn’t care about that, because right now only one question buzzed in her head. Why was her mother afraid? Diana looked behind her to quickly glimpse her mother; she looked white.
Lily had just finished scrubbing the table and was now scrubbing the windows.
"Hey!" cried Diana indignantly. “I am supposed to clean the windows, not you."
“Sorry,” said Lily. “I thought I’d better do it since you are busy thinking about whatever you are thinking."
Diana ignored that and went to throw away her plastic gloves. She walked over to her mother, wished her good night, strode back to Lily, and started pulling her out of the kitchen.
“Good night Mother,” said Lily from the door, “Diana stop pulling me” she added to Diana, trying to free herself of her tight grip.
"All right, come on now” snapped Diana feeling annoyed
The girls tip-toed quietly up the stairs and entered their room.
Lily quickly got into her pale pink nightgown, flopped into the bed, took a book, and started reading.
Diana changed her purple dress for an ivory-coloured nightgown and replaced her stockings with fur slippers. She turned off the lights and cuddled in the cozy warmth of the blankets.
“Lily?” blurted Diana, remembering something
“What?” asked Lily
“Remember our 9th birthday party?” Diana told Lily
“Yes, I do, it was only 2 years ago” Lily answered, “what about it?”
“While you were busy playing ‘Pin the Tail on the Mermaid’ Diana said quickly, “I was here playing hide and seek with Mary, Dorothy, and Sara, then Mother called me to give out the ice cream, she was talking to Mrs. Clawrence – you know Sara’s mother – so anyway she was talking about some sort of family tradition, but it didn’t sound like a tradition to me.” She looked around at Lily with a sort of grimace.
“We are to be given something… you know as a gift” said Diana “It’s an animal, but well…”
“Well, what?" asked Lily
“Well, usually it’s a phoenix but from the time of our great-grandmother Rosalie..." Diana stopped and took a deep breath. “It’s a dragon” she finished quite dramatically.
“And it’s going to be given to us on our 11th birthday,” said Diana still in that dramatic tone “That will be…”
"Tomorrow," finished Lily in a whisper.
Lily and Diana looked at each other. Tomorrow would be a day to remember.
The next day came with dazzling bright sunlight; everything seemed to celebrate Diana and Lily’s 11th birthday. The birds were chirping happily, the trees swayed, and the winds blew. The weather was just perfect.
Diana woke up very early considering that she fell asleep at 1 am, she looked beside her and saw that Lily was still asleep. Taking care not to wake her up, Diana quietly got off the bed and crept into the bathroom.
She turned on the lights, washed her face, and looked around; the bathtub had ocean written on it in big, bold, curvy letters; the washbasin was in its usual pearly white coating; the mirror...someone had stuck lavender, bright pink and white coloured balloons all around the oval glass.
Smiling at herself, Diana slowly turned the bathroom door handle and found herself face-to-face with Lily, who, it seemed, had finally woken up.
“Ahhhhh” Diana gasped as she staggered backward clutching her shawl “Lily!”
“Oh my,” said Lily startled “Did we just scare each other because you look like you’ve just seen a ghost”
Diana laughed nervously, “Yeah, it certainly looks that way”
Then Diana and Lily wished each other a happy birthday and Diana moved out of the way so that Lily could go inside the bathroom.
Diana spotted two piles of presents on the side of each side of the bed. She immediately started opening the presents on her side. Just as she picked up a tiny box - wrapped up in a dark red wrapping sheet – The bathroom door burst open and out came Lily, she was sweaty and looked very frightened.
Diana leaped up and helped Lily calm down.
“What’s wrong?” asked Diana slowly as she made Lily sit on the bed
“In the bathtub, there is o… one” Lily seemed to lose her voice.
“One what?” asked Diana, her eyes widening.
“One D…Dragon egg” Lily gasped looking up at her.
There was silence, as stiff as though the air had frozen. Could it be possibly true? Diana wondered, No, there was no way, Dragons didn’t exist. Even if she had heard Mother talking about it… Perhaps she had just misheard Lily, Yes that sounded right.
“What did you say?” asked Diana again to ensure her ears were working properly.
“One Dragon egg” Lily repeated looking dazed. Her green eyes looked very misty indeed.
No, she hadn’t misheard her after all.
Just as Diana was going to try and comfort Lily again, the bathroom door knob turned, and out came a creature like no other Diana had ever seen.
Diana was struck with awe as she observed the creature's bluish-green coat, green eyes, and charming wings. Its beauty was truly marvellous.
Lily grabbed her hand in fear, but Diana confidently said, "Don't worry, that's a cute animal friend for us”
“That is not even an animal!” Cried Lily, the baby dragon looked upset, like it was about to cry.
“Oh dear,” said Diana “Lily, you hurt its feelings”
Lily looked guilty but Diana did not notice, she ran to the dragon and hugged it. Then she picked it up like a baby.
“You are so adorable” she exclaimed and the dragon purred softly, “Come on Lily, Let’s show her -or him- to Mother and Father"
Lily just down and stormed out of the room.
“I am not taking care of that beast!” yelled Lily from the hall.
“Fine,” said Diana happily “It’s mine”
Diana went downstairs to show the dragon to her parents.
When Mr. and Mrs. Wilson saw the baby dragon, they uttered the same shocked exclamations as Lily had done but unlike Lily, they fell in love with it immediately.
“Come on Lily it’s so adorable,” said Mrs. Wilson
“Oh alright I guess it is” said Lily, “But if that scaly beast burns my cats then I will throw it out of our-”
“LILY! How could you throw my dragon out of our bedroom window when you know perfectly as well as anybody that poison ivy grows under there!” screeched Diana
“How did you know I was going to say that?” demanded Lily
“You know the answer to that too,” said Diana hugging the dragon,
“Now what shall I name you?” Diana asked the Dragon, she thought for a moment and then said “I know! Cleopatra!”
“That sounds lovely” exclaimed Lily
“Yes it does” agreed Mr. and Mrs. Wilson
Then you all know the ending, don’t you? Yes, that’s right.
So, they all lived happily – except the time Cleopatra burned Lily’s hair – ever after.
The end
