World of Blue
Terra
“Have you ever heard of a place named ‘world of blue’?"
“What is that?”
“Wait, you don’t know? How come?”
Angea turned her blue eyes to me. Her high voice was proving that she was very surprised about it. Like that I did not know what I was supposed to. I twisted my tongue. world of a blue, world of a blue. It was not a term that I was familiar with at all. Even if I pronounced the phrase several times in my head, I was not able to feel anything. Nothing came to my mind.
“I know what that legend is. The old contradictory story you mean, right?”
The low voice rapidly traveled through the air and pricked the ear of Angea. Angea, who was surprised by the voice, turned her head to the direction where the sound came from. It was Jude. He was sitting down in the shade of an apple tree. He slowly raised his head and stared at her. Jude turned to face Angea, who was puffing her cheeks filled with air.
“What do you mean by contradictory? It is not!”
“It is. According to the legend, the World of a Blue is a world filled with blue and not having blue at all. That is the contradictory part. Place cannot be blue and not blue at the same time.”
“Why not? If you paint white at the top of blue, that is blue and not blue at the same time!”
“Guys, guys, stop fighting.”
As I asked them to stop fighting, Angea turned her head to me, probably to say something like ‘I am not fighting’ or ‘It is none of your business’ as usual. But not like how I predicted, there was no sound coming from the back. As I turned my head and looked at her, she was just staring at the sky. The clean blue sky does not have any clouds at all.
“I think the sky became… a bit bluer.”
“Bluer?”
“Yes, bluer. Can’t you tell?”
She pronounced the sentence with her eyes fixed to the sky. The ordinary blue sky that does not have any clouds. I turned to look at her. I cannot tell if it was an illusion or real, but her eyes became a bit bluer, without any speck of dust, just like the sky that she described.
“Sky is an ordinary blue. The reason you are feeling like the sky became bluer is just because there are no clouds in the sky today.”
Jude looked sideways at the sky, then turned his head to where Angea is. Angea turned her eyes to Jude. But it seems like she was feeling comfortable with what he just said. She smiled.
“No, it wasn't an illusion.”
Yes, she smiled. Her eyes were blue. So blue that it almost looks like blue ink spilled to her eyes. She was facing a wooden roof of a room, not even knowing what she was facing. Focusless blue eyes were full of hollowness. Jude slowly raised his head, faced Angea. His pupils were a transparent blue, almost like a shallow sea. Angea was gaining blue as Jude was losing it.
“... Angea is taking the color of Jude.”
I whispered. They did not replied. I was not sure if they heard it or not, but one thing that I can tell by sure is that there was silence. Since the day that we sat down at the hill, made a conversation about a weird word, Angea started to become blue, and Jude started to become colorless.
“I… I thought that Jude was correct.”
Angea’s wet voice spread on the big house. Voice echoed in the large, empty room. Tears had formed in her blue eyes. I could not tell if that the tear was originally blue or if it was just a reflection of her blue eyes.
“It is an illusion; it is an illusion. Of course, how could the sky possibly suddenly become bluer? It should be an illusion, right?”
But no one answered. Angea turned her body around. She was trying to find people. People she can talk with, people that she can communicate with. But she was not able to find the people. Only thing she can identify now is if there is something present in front of her or not. the place she stopped her turning was in front of a stool. She was asking for an answer to the stool.
“Only 6 days have passed. 6 days since I noticed color is weird! My eyes are getting bluer, and my sight is getting bluer.”
I can’t paint anymore. That was what she said when I went to see her 2 days ago. Angea set down at the grass. She was holding a brush. A brush that is holding a bleeding white that is mixed with colors. Her palette was the same. I was not able to tell that it is the same palette with the one before. I cannot identify them. They all look all the same. She hugged a canvas. She cried. One side of the canvas was beautiful sea, but the other side was ruined white.
“If one day, I wake up, and what if the world is blue? It is so blue, so blue, so I can’t even identify the light and the shadows, what should I do?”
Her body shook, and tears started to fall from her eyes. It was blue. She was shedding blue from her eyes. Tears fell on the brown wood and painted it to the blue, as if there was no brown present at all. I was not able to hug her. It felt like I would also turn blue if her tears fell to my body.
“Is she asleep?”
Jude was dangerously resting his body on a hand drill, facing the purple night sky. I nodded instead of saying out loud. Jude did not turn back. He was just closing his eyes and feeling the cold night wind, like always. He was calm if nothing had happened.
“People always recognize the color in contrast to their surroundings.”
“I am sorry, I don’t get what you are talking about.”
He opened his eyes and looked at the sky. I was not able to say anything. He was missing a pupil in his eyes. Without identification of whites and iris, it was completely transparent. All the muscles, blood, synapse and all the different unknown cells were directly shown. They were slowly vibrating and moving, like a warm that lost its head. Instinctive disgust, or horror, directly appeared on my face. I was not able to control it. It felt like I saw something that I am not supposed to. Jude slowly closed his eyes. His mouth was smiling but eyes were not.
“I think I, not only I but everyone else was seeing the world by wearing blue glasses.”
I was not able to understand what he was talking about. No, it was not that I didn't understand. I did not want to. The way of recognizing color did not matter. That was not important at all. The important question was not something about that, but it was a why.
“Why?”
“Why is it happening? Why is it us? Why… Why should we have this problem?
I laid down on the floor. I was not able to stand still. Why? That was the question I wanted to ask the most. Had we done something bad? Were we the problem? My eyes got hot. I cried. I cried out loud. Tears felled from my eyes and sniveled at the nose. Clear transparent liquid dripped on the floor.
“We haven’t done anything bad. It was not our fault. It is just a disaster. Disasters are named that way because they came without a reason.”
Jude hugged me. Warm, salty, and white liquid dropped from my eyes. I tried to not make any sound out, but I was not able to help it. I was not able to breathe properly. It felt like all the holes in my body were blocked. There was a loud sound, but it was not possible to tell where the sound was coming from. The world turned blurry. It was a disaster. I was not able to help it. But still, it was so painful to see how there my life is ruining in a second.
The soft singing of birds came through the window. I opened my eyes. Sight was still blurry, and my head was hurt, the thing I most cared about was the fact that the house was so quiet. I woke up and started walking. I was not sure if I was walking properly, but that did not mattered. There was a piece of paper on my desk. An old, yellowish brown colored paper. The letter that I am familiar with, but the letter that I have never seen before came to my sight.
Dear My Best friend.
When you wake up, you might wonder why there is no sound coming outside.
I am sorry that I am just telling you about this by letter.
I am sorry, I am sorry. I twisted my tongue, pronounced it again and again. Sorry was the word used to apologize. But I was not able to understand what he was apologizing for. As I dragged the paper close to me, to just see what the world on the letter is. The smell of corn, and water or glue mixed and came to my nose. Jude does not like this smell, I whispered.
We decided to leave here. We will go to the World of Blue.
If the world is full of blue, and the world does not have any blue at the same time, Angea and I would be able to live normally, like before.
I was not able to understand it. They were the words that are all familiar, but it did not make any sense together. So, does this letter mean that you will come back? I asked, but there was no response. I sat down at my bed. It felt like they had said something, but I was not able to understand it. Maybe the reason was because it was morning now.
Happy birthday.
From Jude.
I saw the calendar next to it. It was my birthday. I just stood there. It feels like I dreamed a dream last night. Inside the dream, it was my birthday. Angea knocked the door, and said, come on, people are all just waiting for you. As I walked down, trying to make my blurry sight clearer, there was Jude. Jude was holding a big, large chocolate cake, which had been divided by three equal pieces. We altogether had a cake and smiled and laughed together.
“I wish he could take me with him.”
I turned my head down. There was a blue mark present on the floor. The blue tears that Angea had fell. So, my friends, is the world full of blue or not having blue anywhere? I would not mind either of them, so let's meet again in a World of Blue. This time, I would be the one visiting your house, so can you please open your door, and say, welcome, like how I did to you before? I would be the one bringing the cakes, so let's cut that in three pieces, and celebrate my birthday again.
