The Dog and His Master
Born 2007, F, from Mt.Vernon, United StatesOnce upon a time there was a dog named Carlos. He had a master named Master Tom. Master Tom loved his dog dearly. They always loved going on adventures together. They were the very best of friends.
One day in the early morning, Master Tom decided to go into the woods and chop some wood. "How about going with me into the woods, huh Carlos? You can be my companion." said Master Tom. Carlos barked and wagged his tail, which was a way of saying, "Of course my Master." So off they went side by side with an ax into the narrow woods. While they were walking, Master Tom was whistling and Carlos was trotting along smelling everything that he passed. When they got to their destination, Master Tom was ready to work. But before he started, he stood awhile to let his mind settle briefly. He listened to the wind rustle the leaves on the trees. He could hear the birds singing in the distance. He smelled the fresh air mixed with the smell of tree sap. Within a few minutes later, he was ready to work. Carlos was nearby enjoying himself as he took his time in smelling the flowers and the other wonders of nature he could get to.
After a long while later, Master Tom decided to take a break and eat his lunch that he had packed with him. Master Tom called for Carlos then sat down against a big pine tree. Master Tom shared his lunch with Carlos like he always does just to be fair. While Master Tom was eating, he listened to the birds sing to their lovely tune and the leaves on the trees rustling with the wind. A short time later, Master Tom was ready to get started again. Carlos decided to sit nearby and watch for a while. But then he went to wondering about again. Master Tom was almost done which he was quite thankful for. He was tired and achy from all of the hard work. He was stuck in his thoughts until he heard sticks breaking in the distance. Which was probably just a animal wondering about. But this still startled Master Tom so much that when he was about to make another swing of his ax, he lost his grip and the ax slipped and fell backward against his leg. He suddenly felt pain searing into his leg. He then lost footing trying to cover his wound. He fell against a tree trunk that was near him and was trying to ease his pain. Then he called for Carlos. When Carlos came trotting over, Master Tom said, "Carlos boy, I am very bad injured. If I don't get help soon I won't survive. So go get Mrs.O'brien. She'll know what to do." (Mrs.O'brien was a sweet elderly lady that lived right beside Master Tom and Carlos. She would make visits often to see how things were going for them. Master Tom and Carlos are good friends with Mrs.O'brien). Master Tom had to tell this to Carlos several times for him to get the idea. By the time Carlos understood that his master was hurt and needed help he didn't waste one minute. He ran as fast as his legs could go and ran through the woods to MrsO'brien's house. When he then appeared on her porch, he started to scratch the door and bark like crazy. It was less than a minute when the door opened and Mrs.O'brien stepped out. "Why, my dear Carlos, she said, "What is the matter, and where is Master Tom?" From the way he was acting, she knew something wasn't right. Carlos looked toward the woods then at her whining. Mrs.O'brien also knew that today was the day that Master Tom was to chop some more wood. And so, just of her anxiety, she then decided to call 911. After she made the call, she felt a little better. But she was still worried about Master Tom. It was then a while longer until the ambulance came. Carlos showed them into the woods. When they found Master Tom, they hurried and fixed hip up so that they could take him to the hospital immediately. Master Tom was quite weak from allof the pain. But before they took him away, he said to Carlos, "You're a good boy Carlos, you saved me, thank you." After a pat or two on Carlos's head, they took Master Tom away.
Mrs.O'brien took care of Carlos until Master Tom was able to come home. When he did come home, he still had to rest his leg once in a while. Master Tom made sure to thank Mrs.O'brien for taking care of Carlos while he was away when she came over for visits to see how they were getting along. "Oh, it was no trouble at all, she said, he was as good as ever." She looked at Carlos for a minute then she said to Master Tom, "I don't think I'll ever forget about that day when he saved you." Master Tom smiled brightly at Carlos. Then he said, "You know, I don't think I ever will either."
