Dogs Eye View
Born 2010, M, from Cass City, United StatesPART ONE- The New Home
When I was born it was darkness. The still darkness that made your eyes not see well making only faint pictures or images.
My mother left me.
She gave birth to me and my sisters, stayed for the day, and left the next morning as soon as the sun peeked between the dirty buildings.
We lived in the alley between a bakery and a cigar shop. The smell of cigar smoke blended with the aroma of bake goods. When I was old enough and could open my eyes I began to grow curious of the world around me.
This led to many trails of thought.
It wasn't until I was about three months old that I realized my mother was gone. My sisters were nothing, but whimpers and golden fur. The world seemed so cold and mysterious that I hadn't seen the rush of people at the end of the alley. They were a mixture of colorful coats, and busy anticipation.
One morning in May I had heard the rush of footsteps and the feel of gloved hands around my stomach.
My sisters let out yelps of warning until finally there was no sound.
Two dark figures in long black coats had me firm in their grasp.
The blended smell of the baking and cigar smoke faded to nothing.
I was tossed around and sometimes the kicking knees of the men hit my paws.
Where was I going?
Then, as if by order the two men stopped running and sat me down on something soft and scratchy.
I looked around and found myself in a yard.
Brown grass was spread in the distance. A "house" was standing in front of me like a disgusting giant. A wood porch had rotting steps that led into a chipping white door. The walls were painted black.
Suddenly, there was a scream and with this two little girls came running from the house.
The one was wearing jeans and a Frozen T-shirt.
The other a sort of dress with leggings.
They scared me at first until I saw how young they were. They looked about 6 or maybe 7, not very old. The two men in the coats strode from the house and sat on the steps of the porch.
A woman also came from this house. She was thin with very long arms and legs.
"Puppy," she muttered.
"The children like it," one of the men said, pointing to me and grinning.
"Bet they do!" replied the woman and she walked into the yard.
She touched my neck and paws. Her hands felt wierd. Like dry sandpaper across the stretch of my back. She backed off and walked silently into the house.
One of the girls had picked me up and was rubbing my chest.
Then, I was put in the house.
It smelled of mildew and the coolness refreshed my fur. This was terrible. My sisters were gone and now I have been forced from my home!
That night as the two girls got tucked into bed one if them made sure to pick me up. It began to rain. Pounding. Thunder. Silver beams cracking the night in two.
I was laying at their feet when all of the sudden one of the girls picked me up and held me close.
Something about her touch made my head lay against her pillow and fall asleep.
PART TWO- The First Hit
The next morning the girls played with me in the back yard. A dark wood surrounded the small property of these strangers.
I chased the girls and they chased me.
For 3 hours we had a digging contest. I dug a hole so deep the only thing visible was the top part of my head.
The girls chuckled and lifted me thoughtfully from the trap.
We played in the sand and with a little water from the hose the sand was perfect for sand castles.
I watched.
After this we want into the house and the two men, the girls, and the woman left.
Later that same afternoon I really had to use the bathroom.
Before long a slight yellow trickle came came from behind.
I HAD USED THE BATHROOM IN THE HOUSE?!?!?!
I leaped from the crime scene, hid under the girls's bed, and waited.
There was a click of the door and as the woman stepped into the house her foot was placed in the wrong spot.
"Ew!" she cried.
The girls, and the men walked in.
"That mutt!" she said. "Where is it?"
I pranced to her feet, my face to the ground.
She lifted her foot and kicked me in my side. This caused me to fall over like a rock.
The agony was of the worst I had ever experienced.
"Shows you know," she said, and walked off to clean her shoes.
This was the First Hit.
PART THREE- The Runaway
This parts obvious.
I had just been hit! The next morning when I woke up there was a strange silence to the house.
No one was home!?!?
My side was throbbing and my head was pounding causing me to be very... uncomfortable.
The back door leading to the yard was open slightly.
I decided to walk out and see what was going on.
I realized a birthday party. There was chocolate cake, balloons, tons of kids, and one if the girls was smiling from ear to ear.
There was a grill cooking burgers and the smell made my mouth water.
It wasn't morning it was 4:00 in the afternoon. I had slept all day and all night.
As I walked over to the side of the steaming grill underneath there was a burger patty that had dropped. I opened my mouth and with a series of continuous nibbles it was gone.
"Hey," a kid yelled. "That puppy ate a burger."
The woman walked over, bent down, and hit my side so no one could see.
"Stay away, mutt," she hissed.
With this I bit her shin. Blood appeared at this mark. She tipped over and landed on the table. Her back smeared in cake frosting. The two men, surprised, let the box of matches fall into the flame of the grill and the grill had spiraled into flames.
I bolted between all this chaos and ran into the wood. The last thing I saw of that family was the smoke from the grill and the scream of the woman.

Help Us Understand What's Happening

06/12/2022I think this was a good try, but it seemed incomplete, and was not really very fun nor happy. It was sad and traumatic. You also started out with a very important part of the story missing. How did the puppies survive without their mother? In reality puppies abandoned by their mother would die in a few days without the milk she provides. But in general I think this story shows that you have some innate writing talent, so I hope you keep working on it, and improving, because I think you could be a great writer one day, Daniel.
