Hi, my name is Isabel and I'm so excited because today I'm graduating from high school, finally! I have many mixed feelings. I'm nervous, happy, but most importantly scared for the future. I still haven't gotten my college letters to see if I got in or not. A couple of days passed and slowly my letters started to arrive, sadly rejection after rejection. All of my options close to home rejected me which made me scared because I get very homesick. Then I remembered that a month before in the college counselor's office I applied to a study abroad program in Japan. I looked at it as a very last choice but now it was my only hope for going to college next year. The letter arrived and I was accepted! I was happy to go to college but I couldn't believe it was in Japan. My parents started crying and I did too. My parents are very overprotective and in their comfort zone, they never let me do anything and always make my decisions for me. I was still unsure whether to go or not.
“You're not going, you can wait another year,” they both said, claiming that I wasn't ready. I finally stood my ground and for the first time made my own decision, “I really want to go, I'm ready for this.” My mom and dad tried convincing me for days to not go but my mind was made up. All of my life I never tried anything new and now was the perfect time to be outgoing. I would start fresh, meet new people, and learn about a new place and culture. I packed and my parents drove me to the airport, at security they started crying and I did too. I had never been separated from home and my family, so I said goodbye and left. I looked back to see my parents crying again, but I couldn't do anything. After a long day at the airport finally, I was walking into the plane. The whole plane was so modern and the seats were huge! I sat down comfortably and started playing movies, the time passed so fast and once I opened my eyes we were in Japan.
I got off the plane and started to wait for someone from college to come pick me up. But first I had to go get my luggage. Time passed, even an hour went by and my suitcase was no were to be found. Did they lose it? Did someone steal it? I had so many thoughts in my head of what happened. I went to go talk with someone at the desk and they told me they would look for it. I waited for one more hour and my luggage was finally in my hands. I felt relieved but frustrated at all the time I wasted there. As I looked around, a Japanese girl who looked my age came with me.
“Are you Isabel?”
“Yes! What's your name?”
“I'm Sakura from college, they told me to come pick you up since we will be roommates.”
“Oh cool!” I answered and we walked to the car. On the drive, we were asking each other questions and talking about the college. Sakura ended up being really nice and once we got there she introduced me to everybody and made sure I was okay. I was so glad that she was by my side and helping me. Japan is a place like none other, it was so modern with huge buildings and so many shops! On the first night Sakura took me with her friends to go eat dinner, we had some sushi. Everyone asked me about America and I was so happy! We also decorated our dorm with posters, pictures, colored pillows, and more. It came out really cool and colorful. The classes for college were very interesting and I learned a lot about business and marketing. I also really loved the culture and everything from Japan! My parents always told me they would come to visit but I wanted to have some time on my own and they did understand that. I loved them but I needed this time to myself. Over time Sakura and I became best friends, we would do everything together. I even decided to stay for 4 years of college in Japan. It was a great experience that I learned a lot from and It really helped me grow as a person.
