The Cup
Born 1955, F, from Lovelock, Nevada, United StatesLily was frantically searching for her favorite cup. She had plenty of other cups she could choose from . Her favorite cup was missing. It had to be found.
She asked her husband. Morgan had not seen Lily's cup. He asked his married son if he had seen the cup. He said no. Lily asked her daughter in law. Eunice said she had not seen the cup. From there the questioning went to the oldest children Morgan Jr. Was questioned if he had seen the cup. He had not. Evelyn was positive she had not had the cup. She promised she had. Nothing to do with the disappearance of her mama's cup.
Next Lily questioned Ella Eunice, she had not seen the cup in several days. Lily looked at her youngest, Eliberty, no he wouldn't, he couldn't have , he was a baby. How could he reach the cupboard?
Morgan told Lily to sit down and have breakfast. He would replace her cup when he was paid. Lily didn't want another cup, not even one exactly like the missing cup. She wanted her cup.
Morgan scolded her. Lily Amanda Lee, you're being ridiculous. He was right, Lily knew it. She was being sentimental and foolish. She tried to eat breakfast, she tried to focus her attention on her husband, her family, her chores . the cup wouldn't leave her mind.
Her instincts kept returning her to the rain barrels, the edge of the house just beneath the kitchen window. The cup wasn't there Lily had searched the area three times.
She visited her neighbors and described the cup and asked if she had mistakenly left her cup there during one of her visits. The neighbors searched for their cups. Lily's cup wasn't there. Two neighborhood women helped Lily search her home as before the cup was not there.
Eliberty was the one person she had not asked. When asked, Eliberty said, I might have been playing outside with your cup. It might be that I accidentally broke your cup . I could have thrown the broken pieces under the house behind the rain barrels.
E.L. as he was known, took his mama to the side of the house. Lily bent low but not low. Enough. E.L. crawled under the house and returned with the broken pieces. Here Mama, here is your cup.
Son, why didn't you tell me ? Why would you let me go on questioning everyone?
Mama, you didn't ask me.
