Born 1997, F, from MO, United StatesJascon awoke to the sound of birdsong, but confusion grew within to an overwhelming level. Something wasn’t right. This was not the place he remembered falling asleep, but where was the place he remembered last being? Where was he now? In the clutches of evil? Or something good? Was he safe here or was this a terrible forest? The forest was filled with light and joy, but that could quickly change. It sounded like Springtime, but surely that had already passed? How did he get there? Something wasn’t right about this place and he was going to find out if he wanted to get back home. To his surprise, he wasn’t hungry or thirsty or even tired. He felt refreshed and happy, but a bit confused. Did he have a family at one point? Where was home? Was he home already? He didn’t know. There was just too many questions about this strange place. He decided to wait where he was to see if anyone would show up. An hour passed by. Then two hours. And then three hours.
The day continued onwards as if nothing was wrong. He thought he could be happy there, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. He wasn’t supposed to be there, right? Suddenly, there was noise, a gentle grass rustle, coming towards him. He tried to think of something he could use as a weapon, but he felt he shouldn’t harm this peaceful forest by breaking off its charming branches. “Jascon,” a voice called to him. He turned and saw a beautiful women dressed in a plain white dress walking towards him. As she stopped in front of him, he asked, “Who are you? Where am I? Where is my home?” She smiled at him and said, “This is your home now, Jascon. My name is Angel. I am to be your companion from now on.” “This is my home?” He asked her. He shook his head and said, “It can’t be. This is not my home. I want my family and friends and…” He trailed off in misery. The woman’s face saddened. She looked him in the eyes and said, “Jascon… you died. This is where you come when you die.”
“I’m dead?” he asked.
He shook his head again and said, “Impossible. I feel very much alive.” He looked her straight in the eyes and said forcefully, “I want to go home. If I’m dead, I want to go back. I want to live my old life.” Angel looked down, her eyelashes shielding the emotions in her eyes, then she looked at him and asked, “You realize that once you go back that you’ll be living a life of pain?” Confused, but persistent, he said, “I realize that. I want to go back home to my old life.” She gave a nod then said, “Very well. You may have your wish. Just remember this, that you cannot come back until you have lived your life and it ends once more.” He nodded and promised, “I’ll remember that.” Angel waved her hand and his eyes closed only to open when he was lying on the hard-cold ground in great pain. He looked down at himself and saw he was heavily bleeding from a gunshot wound. He laid his head back down as he remembered that his wife’s ex-boyfriend had shot him after he had shot her. Her name was Angel. He felt his feet go numb. He should have listened.
The End.

08/25/2021The twist at the end took your story to a new level. I wasn't sure whether I liked it or not with the whole heaven thing and getting to choose whether you can stay or go once you're there, etc...., but when I got to the end you had me. Thanks for sharing your short story on Storystar, Odette.
