The Untold Story of True Friendship
Born 1990, M, from Lagos, NigeriaA certain man wanted to run a printing press, and so went to the bank hoping to access a loan without collateral, and he was told he needed to raise the sum of $5000 to be used as collateral. He didn’t have the money, but he managed to save the sum of $5000 for his printing business.
While sharing a beer with his best friend, he happily announced to him that his target amount has been met, and that he looked forward to going to the bank to access the bulk loan the following day.
That night, his friend rushed to his house looking distressed. He became worried and concerned. There was trouble in paradise. His god-daughter (his best friend’s child), had swallowed a needle that evening and needed an urgent surgery to save her life. He got stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea. So hard to choose between his ambition and the life of his little god-daughter.
Suddenly, he recalled that he had taken a solemn oath of preservation on the day of her birthday, and must hold unto honor. On the other hand, his best friend needed him so badly.
He took a deep breath, and then painstakingly coughed out the sum of $1000 dollars from his saving. “This is all I can give”, he had said, and his best friend took the money with gratitude and left.
He reassured himself that he would certainly save up the money again. But human life is irreplaceable. This was his consolation. He was happy to save a life. He made a huge sacrifice.
Six months later, he lost his job, and began to live off his remaining savings. At a point, he went bankrupt and ran to his friend to recover his loan, but his friend listed out a bucket list of responsibilities also waiting on him, thus declaring himself incapable of assisting.
Things went from bad to worse for the man, and so at a point, someone advised him to visit a car shop, buy a car on credit, to be used for taxi driving, and to be repaid bit by bits. This was hard for him to accept due to the fact that he had nothing to bargain with, and obviously no one to stand in for him.
Eventually, he resolved to give it a try, and upon getting to the car shop, the owner turned him down, as expected, but that was not all. Something else happened.
The owner gave him the option of bringing a reliable friend who at least owns a car, and can guarantee him with the car’s documents. He listed his best friend, but told the car dealer that his friend does not own a car. The car dealer glanced at the list, saw the man’s best friend’s name and contact, then burst into sudden laughter. The man stared at him in confusion.
“Why the sudden laughter?” he asked, and the man replied him saying, “I know this man. Did you say he is your friend?” And the man replied, “yes. He is my best friend.” “And you’re sure he doesn’t own a car?”
"Yes, of course, he doesn’t. If he did, I would have been the first to know.”
The car dealer brought out his invoice booklet and showed the man a page. Behold, his best friend’s name was there, boldly written, marked as having paid for a car in full. The man swallowed hard. Then, the car dealer frowned at him and said, “Please leave my shop. If you say that this man is your best friend, and you don’t know that he bought a car six months ago, then you never knew him at all, and if you do know him, then it means that he never trusted you. I’m sorry you have to leave. I only do business with trustworthy people."
The man took another look at the invoice. Yes, it was really his friend’s name, and he paid for the car same week he borrowed $1000 from his savings to help save his daughter’s life.
He became confused. The facts and figures did not add up. It was literally impossible for his best friend to make such a purchase at that given time, considering the fact that he could confirm how broke he was, and of course his family problems. Secondly, the fact that he never saw his best friend in, or with a new car further complicated his confusion. To help clarify his confused thoughts, the car dealer suddenly said to him; “Your friend said he’d be using the car to run a transit business.” At this point, he understood the whole scenario. His best friend hired a taxi driver to handle his car secretly. Let me end it here.
Now, put yourself in the shoes of this man in the illustration. How does it feel? Yes, that is the reason why I need you to master the craft of sacrifice.
Do you know that if you do not sacrifice your ambitions, or sacrifice your business capital to appease that emotional blackmail, the solution would definitely come from elsewhere? Yes, it always does, so don’t be fooled. Never sacrifice anything that will keep your dreams alive, such is irredeemable, always.

06/15/2021That was a sad and depressing story, Darlington. I'm sure a lot of people are betrayed by those they trust in a variety of ways, and this scenario could be found as a 'true story' in many instances. However, I cannot agree with your advice in the end. Of course, in hindsight, it was not the right thing for him to have leant his money to someone who proved a criminal and backstabber. However, what if he had been telling the truth and the money truly was needed to save his daughter's life? Then his decision would have been the best one he could have made, since it would have saved a life, and that is priceless. Imagine how he would have felt if he had refused the money and the child had died? He would not have been able to live with himself. / What I would suggest to those who find themselves in a similar circumstance in the future, is that they go to the hospital where the surgery is to be performed, and pay the hospital directly. Or whatever the situation may be... if a friend asks to borrow because of a 'life and death' situation... do not pay the friend (if you have the money to give/loan), but rather the person to whom they say they owe the money, once you discover the reality of the situation.
