A New Marble Joins The Team
Born 1980, M, from Exeter, United KingdomWhen I was a young marble, not caring what I should be, I used to roll around in the sun and play happily. Racing around with all my friends, to see who was the quickest of all of them and who would win, was when I was the happiest back then.
In the beginning, I always lost. Bullying and name-calling was the cost. However, as time passed and I started to win, the bullying stopped in favour of cheering. When I was grown enough, my parents sent me off to school and then to Oxford Roll, the well-known marble University, you know. But even though I eventually graduated with a degree, there were no job prospects for a marble such as me.
I ended up in a shop, of course I did. Being sold in a bag, eventually, bought by a mother and her kid. I should have been happy. I really tried. The kid would even play with me outside. However, something was missing, something was wrong. I just didn't feel like I belonged. I needed some speed. I needed a thrill. Would I find it, again, staying here? I thought I never will. So, one sunny day, I simply decided to roll away.
I spend my time travelling from place to place, dreaming of how I would compete in a race.
I came to the conclusion, after thinking it through, that racing was what I really wanted to do. How could I do it? I didn't have a clue. I looked for jobs. People would not give me one, no matter how hard I tried. I almost cried.
What happened next was quite by chance. I didn't plan it in advance. I saw another marble rolling to a door and decided to follow him, not knowing what for. I thought: “He's a marble like me, maybe he knows where I'm supposed to be.”
Well, we rolled together through the door and ended up on a wooden floor. Upon looking up, I saw other marbles like me. They were racing together happily. “What is this place?” I squealed in delight. The other marble looked to his right and said, with a smile so bright: “This is Jelle's Marble Runs, friend, and I'm going to win. Now hurry up, the race is about to begin. You can join my team: The Crazy Cats Eyes! I’m sure you will be welcome in. My name is Red Eye by the way, now come on, we haven't got all day!”
Just like that, I was put upon a track with lots of other marbles at my back. For the first time ever, I felt absolutely free. When I got stuck, the safety marble was there to help me. Nobody was laughing at me and the race got commented on expertly.
When at last, the race was done, guess what? My team, The Crazy Cats Eyes, won!!!!
I know my parents will be proud of me, as you can watch the videos on YouTube for free!

04/07/2021Fun story, Christopher! I like the inner rhymes. Was it a poem or do you always write prose poetry? Highly original theme.
Congrats on being short story STAR of the Day! Best wishes, Sylvia

04/08/2021Thank you Sylvie. No, not really. There was just something about this fan fiction story that sounded better in rhyme.
