Ram and Shyam
Born 1950, F, from Chennai, IndiaRam and Shyam
Ram and Shyam were friends from their childhood. They lived in nearby houses and their families were very close. They always played together, joined the same school, and were studying in the same class. When they were kids, everything went on well. After becoming teenagers, troubles started. That was the period they started comparing themselves with each other.
Ram excelled in his studies. He had a good grasping and a good memory power. He always would come first, need not say, he was always the teachers' favorite. Shyam, even though he scored well, he was not reaching Ram's heights. He was jealous of Ram. But he valued Ram's friendship so much that he feared the jealous feeling might weaken their friendship.
So he wanted to consult somebody. He felt his grandpa was the right person. He had solved many of their family problems through his wisdom. Shyam's parents too held grandpa in high regard.
Shyam went to Grandpa's room.
Shyam: "Grandpa I have a problem. You know Ram, is it not?"
Grandpa: "Yes, he and you are intimate friends. What happened to him?"
Shyam: "Just, I am jealous of him."
Grandpa: "What is the reason?"
Shyam explained.
Grandpa: It is good that you diagnosed your problem. So many people are jealous and they don't know that they are jealous. So this awareness will help you, to manage your jealousy. The second good thing is you want to get rid of that. You love your friend, is it not?
Shyam: Yes.
Grandpa: "When he is very good at something, how you can become jealous? You can admire him, adore him. Then you will be motivated by him.
Shyam: But Grandpa, he is gifted with intelligence and good memory. How can I become like him? It seems impossible.
Grandpa: "Recently I read in a book about two types of mindsets. Take the example of intelligence and memory power. People with a fixed mindset believe that these qualities are inborn, fixed, and unchangeable. Those with a growth mindset, on the other hand, believe that these qualities can be developed and strengthened by way of commitment and hard work. Finally, you can get some clues from Ram also.
Shyam: Grandpa, in my heart now there is no jealousy. Now I think that by working hard, I too can improve my grades. Thank you.
Grandpa: That is good. Jealousy can spoil your health and spoil a good relationship also. You have a very good heart. I am proud of you my son.
In Ram's house, a similar scene was happening. Ram thought he was the best boy in the class because the teachers always praised him seeing his good scores in all subjects. But when the School Pupil Leader was elected he got only two votes and Shyam was elected, who got 38 votes. This shattered his ego. He loved Shyam, but this happening he could not bear. He was at a loss to understand, why all liked Shyam. In his mind jealousy raised its head. He too valued Shyam's friendship more than everything. So he wanted to consult his father, who was a Professor in Psychology. He went to his room and knocked gently. His father told, "Come in." He was astonished to see Ram there, with a not so cheerful face.
Father: "Sit down my boy. What is the matter?"
Ram: "Dad, I am jealous of Shyam."
Father: "Shyam is a good friend of yours. Why this sudden jealousy?"
Ram explained the reason.
Father: "Actually a school pupil leader need not be a rank holder. He should organize team events and work for student's welfare. Shyam may have such qualities. Will he help other students?"
Ram: "Actually he helps everybody. Once when we were writing an examination, one student fainted. He did not mind about the results or marks. He immediately helped him, getting information about the parents and informing them. He was working with the teachers until the boy was handed over to his parents after treated by the School Doctor. Then he came to the examination hall. But the time was over. But the teachers gave him some extra time to finish the paper."
Father: "Can you talk about any other incident like this?"
Ram: "Plenty. Whenever he gets chocolates or cakes, he would bring them to the school and would share with everybody."
Father: "Then?"
Ram: "He would sit for some time after the classes are over to clear their doubts. You can go on telling Dad."
Father: "You know now, why he was elected." So don't get jealous of him. Be happy your friend is good at winning the confidence of everybody. This jealousy will make you very unhappy."
Ram: "But I can't become like him. He does all these things spontaneously. I now feel I am a selfish person."
Father: "Actually this can be called envy. You are envious of him because what he is having you are not having. No, you are not selfish my son. You learn how to help others from him. Let him learn how to get good grades from you, which will help him in his personal development. Be good friends always."
Ram: "Thank you, Dad, I have no jealousy now."
And needless to say, they became role models of true friends, thanks to Grandpa and Dad.
