Letting Go
Born 1960, F, from San Antonio Texas, United StatesThe rays of early morning sunlight coming through Lindsey's bedroom awakened her. She felt as if she had been asleep for a long time. Yet she still felt tired and groggy. She struggled to get out of bed.
Finally succeeding she put on her slippers and went downstairs. Normally she would be greeted with the aroma of Bacon and Eggs. Not this morning. Only a bowl of cereal and a glass of milk awaited her.
Then she remembered. She and her Mom had been in a terrible car accident two weeks ago. She had survived, her Mom had not. Lindsey's Great Aunt May had come to stay with her. Aunt May didn't cook, so cereal it was for breakfast.
Lindsey sat down to the breakfast table. She had no appetite for this sugary confection. She pushed the bowl away. But it tipped and the contents spilled all over her Mom's beautiful table clothe.
Aunt May came rushing over. "How in the World did this happen? What a mess!" Lindsey apologized, "Sorry I'm just not hungry." Aunt May said way too loudly, "You'd better go ahead and get dressed for Work."
Lindsey rolled her eyes, "You mean School, I'm only six years old Aunt May."
Lindsey hurried upstairs and dressed for School. This would be her first day back. She didn't want to go. She much preferred to stay home and wallow in her grief.
She waited outside for the bus. The bus came rambling right past her. She threw up her hands and wailed, "What am I invisible or something!"
Fortunately her neighbor Bobby was getting into his Mother's car. He went to the same School as she. He was just one year younger. She opened the front door of the car and slid in. "Hi Bobby I just missed the bus, hope it's OK if I catch a ride with Your Mom." Bobby didn't answer, just sighed.
Bobby's Mom came out shaking her head, and said, "Who left the car door open? Bobby I've told you before not to do this." She slammed the car door shut and got behind the wheel.
"Sorry Ms Smith I missed the bus and need a ride to School, thanks." When they got to School Lindsey said, "Thanks Ms Smith this is my first day back, I have to hurry or I will be late." She and Bobby got out a minute later she turned to wave bye to Ms Smith. Bobby's Mom was closing the same car door and muttering to herself.
Even though she caught a ride she was five minutes late to class. She hoped her teacher wouldn't make her go to the office. It would be difficult enough to see all the sad or uncomfortable faces of her classmates.
When she entered the classroom the flat screen TV that was used for educational films suddenly popped on. She must have jumped a foot. The other children giggled and whispered among themselves. MR Scott her teacher shushed the class and said, "You know for a new TV it sure does malfunction a lot." He turned the set off and told everyone to get his or her Geography books out.
Lindsey snaked her way to her desk and sat down. On it was a pink carnation her favorite flower. She looked around to see who might have placed it there. A few desks away she saw creepy Stephen smiling at her. She picked up the flower and threw it on the floor.
Cindy who sat next to her retrieved the flower and put it back on the desk. "Cindy I did that on purpose, I don't want Stephen thinking I like him." She pushed the flower off again. This time Cindy said, "OH!" and placed the flower back on the desk.
The day seemed to drag on forever. Finally lunchtime arrived. Lindsey went with her peers to the lunchroom. But still she had no appetite. She found an empty table, sat down she wanted to be alone.
Stephen sat next to her, "Not hungry huh?" "Stephen I'm not feeling well just leave me alone." Stephen said, "OK, but I'll see you later." "Stephen what do you mean later?"
Stephen just smiled and left.
The rest of the School day seemed to go on even longer. Lindsey just wanted desperately to go home. At least at home she could be alone.
The final bell rang. Lindsey rushed to her bus. She didn't want to miss it. But the buss missed her stop again. As she passed the Bus Driver she asked, "Why do you keep passing up my stop?" The Bus Driver did not answer. The next stop was only two blocks away. She got out with three other students and went home.
When she opened the door the air was thick with smoke from incense. She coughed and wailed, "OH Aunt May you know this smoke bothers my asthma." The smoke was thick and she could hardly see.
She made her way to the Living Room where the smoke was coming from. She heard a strange Woman's voice. "It's time to cross over, you mustn't stay here anymore." She thought who is this?
She also heard her Mom crying, "But it hasn't been long enough, I'm not ready to let go."
Aunt May said, "But you have to dear, you must for your own peace of mind." Lindsey
Started to cry, "Why is my Mom here?"
Someone touched Lindsey's shoulder. She turned with a start. It was Stephen. She said, "Stephen what are you doing in my house?" Stephen said, "You don't remember do you?
I died last year of Cancer." Lindsey's eyes widened, "Stephen are You haunting my house?" Stephen said, "No I was sent here, Lindsey Your Mom didn't die, you did."
Lindsey took a step back, "NO! My Mom was killed, but I survived!" Stephen shook his head. "No Your Mom survived, but even though the accident wasn't her fault she blames herself and she can't bear to let you go. "You need to tell Your Mom that you don't blame her and it's OK to let you go."
A beautiful light appeared in the corner of the Living Room. Stephen said, "It's time to go into the light. But first you must speak to Your Mom." Tears were streaming down her Moms face. Lindsey placed her hand gently on her Mom's trembling cheek. "Mom the accident wasn't your fault, I have to go now, but remember this I will always love you."
Lindsey's Mom cried out, "OH MY God, I can feel her, she's here!" The woman setting next to her Mom said, "Lindsey it's time to cross over now."
Lindsey took Stephen's hand and they crossed into the Light. They were welcomed into the Loving Warmth of the Light. Here they would wait for the loved ones who would one day join them.

Another very great story. I've looked into spiritual matters of that kind a lot and believe that ghosts can appear in dreams.
I will read more of your stories now. Well done.

02/13/2021Thank you for your kind words. I often dream of my Dad. In one dream I was told that my Dad was being reborn into a new family. If true my Dad has a new life.
