The Altruistic Grandpa
Adult, F, from Mianwali, PakistanJohn's parents died in an accident many years ago. Now his grandfather takes care of him. They belong to a poor family. But his grandfather never lets John suffer from lack of any facility in his life. After John completed his initial education; he got him admitted in one of the best schools in the town. John's grandfather is a peon in an ordinary school. The purpose of John's grandfather life is to see John at an honourable position. John is an extremely reckless and an irresponsible boy with no aim in his life. His grandfather sends him to school but instead of going to school he spends most of the time sitting beside a lake, playing with his friends, laying on grass and then returning home.
"Wake up boy, it's 6:00am, a good early morning, rise and shine," uttered John's old grandfather.
"Let me sleep," John said.
"Go out and have a morning walk. You will feel energetic," Old Grandfather said.
"Ok, fine,"John said. John woke up.
"Grandfather never lets me sleep," John thought.
John went for a walk. In the meanwhile his grandfather prepared breakfast for him. Breakfast consisted of 1 slice of oily bread and a tea without milk and sugar. John returned.
"Come, have breakfast," Grandfather said.
"Is it a breakfast? What kind of breakfast is this grandpa? I can't even think of eating it. Since my childhood u force me to eat this stuff. Now I am tired, I can't eat it. I am going to school," John said.
Grandpa put breakfast aside and started cleaning the house. As he went to John's room, he saw his satchel.
"O! He has again forgotten to pick up his school bag. He must be worried about it. What if teacher asks about homework and he doesn't have the notebook, he will be embarrassed and upset," Grandfather thought.
Grandfather picked up the bag and went to school. The principal met him and told, " John is a careless boy. He hasn't attended even a single class since his admission in school. He is even absent today. You should take care of him. I can't allow him to study here anymore. He is expelled."
Grandfather was deeply hurt. His head was pondering with pain. He returned home with tears in his eyes. All his efforts to see John prosperous in his life were in vain.
John returned. Grandfather told him all the incident and asked him that where he was?
"This is my life, old man. Stop interfering in it. My life is perfectly fine. I have everything. I don't have to study. You should care about yourself old man," John said and went to his room immediately.
The old grandfather was shocked and crying. He wanted to talk to him but John didn't open the door then grandfather went to his own room.
The next morning, John woke up very late.
"It is 11:00 am. Why grandpa didn't come to wake me up?" John asked himself.
John came to breakfast table, breakfast was not ready. Morning seemed awkward. He went to grandpa's room and found that his grandfather was lying on the floor. He called the ambulance. At the hospital the doctor told that his grandfather had suffered a severe heart attack and therefore he died. Hearing this his eyes filled with tears. He went to his grandfather's dead body and said, "I am so sorry grandpa, it is all my fault. I am so sorry."
Then after his grandfather's funeral he came back home. There was complete silence in the house. There was no one to advice him now. There was no one to interfere in his life now. There was no one to tell him to study. He went to his grandfather's room. There was a little box with a note. He opened the note and read it.
"John, you do not comprehend my efforts to provide you all the facilities in your life. You say your life is flawless. You can't even imagine what sacrifices I have made to make things perfect for you. When I force you to wake up early in the morning, you get annoyed, but you don't understand that I sacrificed my sleep to wake you up in the morning. In my heart, there's pain, the agony that is taking my life away. But I intend to disclose something before I die. This silver box contains a lot of money that I have saved for your higher education since you were a kid. I apologise for the oily bits of bread I forced you to eat. I wanted to save money for your better future. My son, this is the moment when you have to decide how to use this money to build a better future for yourself. This old guy is now retiring from all of his duties. Don't be sad, my child. I've already forgiven you. Be courageous and good luck."
These words of grandpa had a strong influence on John's mind. Perhaps after reading the letter his life changed forever. The next morning he went to school, retook the admission as he was expelled for his prolonged absence. He started studying diligently. The years went on, he got so many educational scholarships that helped him accomplish his studies without any financial burden. He continued to study hard with full focus and concentration. And at last after years of hard work the day came when he became the top surgeon of his town. He named his hospital after his late grandfather.
He went to his grandfather's grave and said:
"My Grandpa, your death changed me. It changed my thinking, my life forever. I wish I would have realised all these things when you were alive but unfortunately I didn't. I know you are looking at me with a big smile on your face. You must be proud of your careless boy now. You were and are the altruistic pillar of my life. My dear old man must be happy now. Love you grandpa. May your soul rest in peace."

02/06/2021Your fine story reminds me of the saying, "No good deed goes unpunished." Still, as on show , sometimes it takes time for the fruit of our efforts to develop. Thanks for the tale. jg
