Spark.
Born 1951, M, from Wilmington NC, United StatesSpark was nervous. Very nervous. It was her first assignment. A Human.
Spark knew she was the head of her class. She was proud of her efforts to be the best she could be. Like all Fairies, she was humble, but confident. But to be given a Human for her first assignment. That was way beyond rare. She asked the Queen when was the last time a Fairy was given a Human for her first assignment.
The Queen Smiled down at Spark:
“Why Never, my Dear. “
Spark let out a little irk. The Queen patted her with her wand.
“You will do well Child. Olivia never picks the wrong Fairy.”
Standing next to the Queen, Olivia smiled down at Spark- looking her right in the eye:
“Never.”
*****
Spark waited in the meadow. He should be here any minute now. Her Human. Spark was nervous.
“What am I supposed to do? Nobody even told me what I can do on this assignment. I guess I will have to wing it.”
That last sentence made her chuckle to herself. Fairies always laugh when told to wing it…since, well, winging is the only way they get around. Oh sure, they can walk, and stand upright, but by far, they prefer to flitter about in the air. Unless they are dancing. Dancing on the ground is fun, peeking in and out of long grass, or hopping up onto toadstools. Maybe a loop or barrel roll to add some dimension to the dance. Spark, like most Fairies loved to dance, and like most Fairies, she preferred the sky and flying to walking or standing.
This time tho…she was standing on a toadstool. Waiting for her Human to show up. Wondering what she was supposed to do.
And…there he was.
*****
Kevin didn’t really watch where he was going. He just sort of stumbled through the woods. His eyes were filled with the tears of a broken heart. It isn’t easy to be kind and polite when the girl you spent ten years with tells you: “I don’t love you anymore.”
Kevin took it all in when she quietly explained that there wasn’t anyone else…yet. She thanked him for all the good times. For being so gentle, kind, and understanding. She kissed him gently on the cheek and walked away. He stood by the edge of the woods for a long time after she left. Then, without any destination in mind, he stumbled, tripped, and staggered deeper and deeper into the woods. As if he could run away from what had just happened.
Everything was blurry because of the water that wouldn’t stop dripping from his eyes. So he didn’t notice the Fairy standing on the Toadstool …at first. Then he had to wipe his eyes to make sure he wasn’t seeing things. He wasn’t. A Fairy was standing on a Toadstool. She had on a very pretty green skirt that barely came to mid thigh. A tight, but modest pink top that let him know she was a female Fairy. Her hair was cut in a Pixie style…and he wasn’t sure if that was another species or a nickname for Fairies. It look good on her. She had a little cute nose, sharp pointed ears - which were as cute to him as her button like nose. Her eyes were a dark emerald green…that matched almost exactly her skirt.
She was smiling up at him with those wide kind eyes.
It took less than a second for him to take her all in. And only another second for him to decide he liked her. It probably took most of that first visit for him to figure out he was falling in love.
With a Fairy.
*****
Spark saw the tears flowing down the freckled cheeks of the bright red headed boy who had just burst into the meadow. He was stumbling around without really seeing what was around him. Her first thought was how cute he was. Gentle is the word that leaped into her mind first. He wasn’t big for a Human. Maybe a little over five feet tall. A lithe build with a bit of muscle around his shoulder and Ches. Like a dancer who also chopped wood for a living. Even though he was stumbling around like he was lost, there was nothing wrong with his balance. Then he looked right at her.
She felt a shock go through her. It rippled up her entire body making all four of her wings buzz in harmony. Her eyes glowed like emeralds, and her two perfectly formed hands leapt to her mouth to cover the “Oh” that exploded from her. Fairies only fall in love once. And only once. She was in love.
Her wings had changed to that lovely rose color the means not only that the Fairy is in love, but that they are in love with the right one. How could a Human be the right one? Fairies can’t cry…or Spark would have drowned the toadstool with a flood of tears.
She sat down as her legs gave out.
What was she to do?
*****
Kevin was in pain. What he thought was his “True Love” had just dumped him. He couldn’t be mad at her. He didn’t own her. He wanted her to be happy. And if being without him made her happy…then that would make him happy….eventually. At least that is what he said to himself as he dragged himself through the woods. Sad thoughts clouding his vision along with unwanted tears. Maybe because he himself was sad, he recognized it right away on the Fairy that had just collapsed on the toadstool.
Kevin sat down next to the toadstool, reached over with his hands to cup the unresisting Fairy in both hands. He lifted her to his face. She was surprisingly heavy for such a little thing. Her Ruby colored wings seem to quiver. He thought when he first saw her standing on the toadstool that her wings were a very light pastel green. Not the glowing fierce rose color they are now. But what did he know about Fairies?
Nothing.
******
“Are you okay?
Spark nodded a negative.
“Is there something I can do for you?
Spark sucked in a breath. Fairies don’t know how to lie. And they have no filters. Spark responded as a Fairy would:
“Yes. You can love me.”
There. It was out in the open. She had told a Human something she had never said to another Fairy. Of course, Spark was only two hundred years old…young for a Fairy. Way to young to choose a mate for life. A very long life. Fairies aren’t immortal…but so long lived that by Human standards, they may as well be.
“What?”
“I want you to love me. I already love you. See?”
With that Spark made her whir like a hummingbird, lifting her just a few millimeters off of Kevin’s hands. Her wings splashed a red rose/ruby glow off of his clear skin.
“Your wings mean your in love? Is that why they aren’t green anymore?”
A thrill raced from Spark’s heart to her mind. This Human was quick. Without being told (and who would tell him?) that a Fairy’s wings change only twice in their lives. Once when they fall in Love. And once again, just before the transition to whatever is next after this life. That second color change is so that all the other Fairies can say their goodbyes and wish them good luck in whatever is next. This Human had already guessed why Spark’s wings had changed color.
“Yes. I love you. I always will. It can’t be changed.”
“Oh.”
“What do you Humans do when you fall in love?”
“Well, normally we become friends first, then we date for a while, and then we kind of explore each other…both body and mind…and somewhere along there…we tell the other person we are in love. Sometimes, it works.”
“Sometimes. You mean you don’t know if you are in love, or they are in love with you?”
“Well, no. I thought I was in love with Lizzy. We have been together since Fourth Grade. (Spark nodded encouragingly …even though she had no idea what Fourth Grade is. Or who Lizzy was.) She just told me she didn’t love me anymore. “
Kevin started to cry. Spark flitted up to the side of his head and gently stroked his hair as he cried. Her wings grew a deeper and deeper red. Love, caring, concern, and compassion were welling up into her wings. Her love grew.
“Do you only cry when you are sad, or hurt?”
“What?”
“Well, Fairies can’t cry. I don’t know anything about tears. I have seen Humans cry before, but never from this close.)
Spark caught one of Kevin’s tears, holding it in her hand like a Human would hold a snowball…the proportions would have been just about right. She marveled at it.
Kevin watched her looking at her reflection in his tear. For some reason his breath caught in his throat. She was beautiful. She was kind. She was caring. He knew that. Just not how he knew that. So he told her.
“You know, if I had wings. I think they might be turning red.”
Spark flitted to the front of Kevin’s face. Reaching her tiny arms as wide as she could she pulled his head towards hers. She was surpassingly strong for such a little creature.
“Do you mean that?”
“Yes.”
It was a simple answer. As soon as Kevin spoke that word out loud, he knew it was true.
Spark reacted the only way she could.
She kissed him softly on the lips. She held that kiss until she felt Kevin’s arms go around her.
It was a while, but Kevin leaned back to look into her eyes.
“That was some kiss.”
Spark twinkled. There is no other word. She twinkled like a star, a diamond, or a Fairy in Love.
“Yes. Thank you very much.”
“Oh. No. Thank you.”
It was only when Kevin leaned back to look into her eyes, that he noticed they were holding hands. A part of his mind thought that was cool. Another part thought it was strange since he was like twenty times her size. Then another part of his mind wanted to pinch him to make him realize that he was exactly the same size as the Fairy now. That is when his whole brain gave up, and he plopped down on the toadstool with a gentle thud.
“What has happened to me?”
Spark was cuddling him now. Holding him close. She was sure he was in shock. And unsure what to do. So she just kept loving him.
“Well, Humans and Fairies can’t normally fall in Love. I heard tales when I was a Sprite…that if you love a Human, you have to either become like them…or they have to become like a Fairy. I am glad you chose to become like me.”
Kevin thought about it for a second. And only a second.
“Me too.”
As they flew back to tell the Queen they were in love…Spark thought to herself:
“Hmm…I am not nervous at all.”
Kevin just held her hand as they buzzed along the flowers. All thoughts of Lizzy were gone. His thoughts now, were only about Spark and their future.
His wings glowed red.
