It's always watching you
Born 2007, F, from Male', MaldivesChapter 1: Big mistake!
It was midnight. I had two of my friends over for a sleepover at my house. It was sort of quiet and we all were sleepy. “Since we all are tired and sleepy and have nothing to do, why not play the Ouija board?”, I asked. “Alright, I’m in”, my friend answered. We lit four candles and turned off all the lights. We could barely see anything since the light from the candles were dim. We got the board ready and placed a candle on each corner. We gently put our index fingers on the planchette. “So….who’s willing to do the talking?”, my friend asked. We all looked at each other. “I will”, I finally said. I didn’t necessarily want to, but I knew no one else would volunteer.
“Are there any spirits in this room?”, I asked. The planchette quickly went to “YES”. We asked a few more questions. “Ask it one more question and then we will say goodbye.”, my friend said. As I opened my mouth to speak, the planchette started to aggressively spin around the board. “If anyone of you is moving this, it’s not funny!”, my friend cried. “Um, this is a spirits way of creating a portal to escape the board.” I told them. BANG! We heard all the books fall off from the shelf. My friends took their fingers off the board. Eventually I did too. Everyone was calm for a minute…. until we realized what we did. “Wasn’t it one of the rules to never take any of our fingers off the planchette at any time?”, my friend asked. I nodded. We all started to freak out. We quickly ran to turn on the light. One of my friends were literally crying and freaking out. She aggressively grabbed the board and snapped it in half. She then ran to the window and threw the board away. “There, we don’t have to worry about that anymore!”, she cried. Taking our fingers off the planchette was already a huge mistake and then this happens? At this point I was honestly expecting something horrible to happen. “You know what? Let’s just go to bed”, I said awkwardly. We all uncomfortably laid down on the bed trying to forget about the fact that we even played the Ouija board and a spirit tried to escape.
Hours passed by. Nothing happened.
Chapter 2: Help!
It was 4 pm the next day. “Weren’t your parents supposed to pick you guys up like 3 hours ago?”, I asked. “Yeah I wonder what happened”, one of my friends said. “I’ll go ask my mom”, I told them. I knocked on the door of my mom and dad’s room. No answer. “They’re probably asleep”, I whispered to myself. I opened the door. Weird. No one was there. I was very confused because if they went out, they would probably tell me. “Whatever”, I thought. “Um… guys my parents aren’t there”, I said. “Well more time for us to hang out!”, my friend said cheerfully. “Yeah, but don’t you think it’s weird? I mean none of your parents even called you to check on you or come to pick you guys up and my mom didn’t come to check on us since like 10am”, I asked. “Well, if you put it that way, it is weird but maybe they just wanted to give us more time to hang out or something”, one of my friends said. “After a sleepover? I don’t think so”, my other friend replied. “Let’s just not overthink this, they’re probably just busy”, I tried to cheer them up a bit. They agreed. So, we brushed it off our shoulders.
It was now 2:30am in the night. Still no sign of any of our parents. My friends and I were taking the advantage of the fact that my parents weren’t there. We were stuffing our mouths with chips, doughnuts, chocolate, and more junk food. “Don’t you think that we should at least give our parents a call?”, my friend asked. “Why? we are literally having the time of our lives right now”, I answered. “Just to, um, I don’t know, SEE IF THEY ARE ALIVE?”, she said. “No, they’ll eventually call us”, my other friend said.
As soon as 3am struck, the door swung open. Along with that, the TV switched on by itself, books were being thrown around, and all the chairs fell. “What’s happening?”, one of my friends cried. “I don’t know!”, I freaked out. Just then we all got the same texts, from the same number, at the same time. It said: “I see you” and a picture of us taken from behind was below it. We turned back pronto. No one was behind us. “What do we do?”, I yelled. “Let’s get out of the house”, my friend yelled back. Without saying anything, we all stood up and sprinted to the door.
We got on the lift, still screaming and panicking. The lights on the lift were flickering. We had no idea what to do. When the lift door opened, we rushed out of the house. “That’s weird. No one’s outside”, my friend said. “Well it’s 3am so maybe that explains why”, I said. Just then my friend got a call from an unknown number. She picked it up. “Hello?”, she said. “I can still see you”, the voice on the call answered. “Who are you?”, my friend shrieked. The caller hung up. “Let’s run”, I cried. We ran as fast as we could. “Call the police!”, I yelled without looking back. No answer. “Guys?” I stopped. None of my friends were there. “This is not funny!” I said. I started to hear screaming from all directions. The screaming voice was saying: “You can’t run from us!”. I was bewildered. I was terrified. I couldn’t believe that all this was happening. Just a harmless Ouija board game has turned into running around in the streets, screaming. I started screaming for help. But no one was in the streets.
Chapter 3 : You can’t run from it!
“Wake up!”, my friend yelled. It was just a dream. I let out a sigh of relief. “Quick, look what we found when you were asleep!” my friend said. she looked a bit scared which got me a little worried. She gave me a piece of folded paper. I unfolded it. I read the words which seemed like it was written with blood. It said: “Hide now! It’s here!” in big letters. “Did you write this?”, I asked my friends. “No. We found it next to your pillow”, my friend explained.
While we both were talking, my other friend was silent. “Guys I think I saw something”, she finally spoke. “What? where?”, I asked. She pointed her finger to the door which was slightly opened. “That’s weird, wasn’t it closed before?”, I asked. “Look!”, she freaked out. There was someone walking back and forth, near my room door. “What is that?” I whispered. “I think that’s what we are supposed to hide from”, my friend guessed. “Where do we hide?”, my other friend asked. “Hurry get up! We will go inside the bathroom and lock ourselves in there”, I panicked. We all hurried over to the bathroom while trying to make no noise. We got in the bathroom and gently locked the door. A few minutes later, we heard footsteps in the room. “Guys what is that”, my friend asked. “Shush”, I told her. We heard things fall and then a knock on the bathroom door.
We all stared at each other while putting our hands on our mouth to prevent from making any sound. “You can’t hide forever”, said a sweet, raspy voice. It started laughing and as seconds went by, the laugh got fainter and fainter. Then finally we heard the door bang shut. “I think it’s gone, let’s get out”, my friend whispered. “No, let’s call the police!”, I suggested. “So we tell the police that we played the Ouija board and then a spirit escaped into the house and now we are all hiding in the bathroom because we saw the spirit walking around in the living room?”, my friend asked sarcastically. “Yeah I guess” I whispered. “The police will never believe it”, my friend said. “Then let’s get out, we can’t stay in here forever”, I told my friends. I quietly opened the door. No one was there anymore. I tiptoed out of the bathroom and so did my friends. “Let’s go tell your parents!”, my friend cried. “Yeah ok”, I said.
We all rushed to my parents’ room. But when we opened the door, they weren’t there. “Let’s get out of the house!”, my friend yelled. “Wait no! that was the mistake we did in my dream!”, I yelled back. We sprinted back to my room and locked the door. “Someone is calling me. Should I pick it up?”, my friend asked. “Yeah who is it?”, I asked. “An unknown number”, she said. She picked up the call. “I can see you”, said the same voice we heard from outside the bathroom door. We all panicked. We quickly closed all the curtains and switched off all the lights. It was pitch black now. “Leave us alone!”, my friend yelled. “You messed with me first”, the voice said. “Hang up!”, I cried. She did. “I can still see you!”, said the voice again. “I told you to hang up!”, I yelled. “I did”, my friend cried. My heart skipped a beat. A chill ran down my spine. “We are in a room WITH A SPIRIT!”, my friend cried. “Turn on the lights then!”, I cried. I heard her flipping the switch on, but nothing happened. “The switch isn’t working!”, she yelled. “I told you, you can’t hide from me”, the spirit said. I closed my eyes hoping that we will get out alive or some miracle would happen.
Chapter 4: Plot twist
The light switched on. I opened my eyes. My friends weren’t there. “GUYS?” I yelled. I started to panic. I ran to the living room. It was dead silent. The door to my parent’s room was locked. I quickly texted my friends asking where they were and if they were okay. I got a reply. “Yeah, what do you mean?”, she said. “Wait. Where are you guys?”, I panicked. “I’m at home, why?”, both of my friends texted back. “But you were just at my house”, I replied. “No. We left this morning, remember?”, They said. “Is this really happening?”, I asked myself. “Mom?” I yelled. No answer. I yelled a few more times before banging on the door crying. I had no idea what was happening. I didn’t know what to do so I decided to try and get my mind off from everything. I sat on my bed and started to watch tiktoks. I felt something hit my head from the pillow that I was resting my head on. I looked behind. It was the Ouija board. The same Ouija board that my friend snapped into two and THREW OUT OF THE WINDOW! I absolutely lost my mind. How is the board ok? I was more mad than scared. I grabbed the board and aggressively threw it on the floor. I turned off the light and closed my eyes trying to sleep.
I did fall asleep, but for a few minutes. When I woke up my head hurt. I rubbed my head and started to look around. My mouth dropped open. There was no furniture in my room. I checked my living room and just as I expected, there were no furniture. There was literally nothing in my house except for the lights and fans. I also noticed a huge cardboard box in a corner. I walked over to the box. As I got closer to the box, I felt something push me into the box. When I fell, something pushed my head in the box. Whatever was pushing my head in the box wouldn’t let go. But when it finally did, I quickly got my head out of it and just stared at the box wondering what just happened.
“Hey, hurry up!”, I heard my friend yell from my room. I ran over to my room. My heart skipped a beat when I saw my two friends sitting on the floor getting ready to play the Ouija board. “What are you doing here?” I cried. “Um, you suggested we play the Ouija board silly”, my friend was confused. “I thought you guys went home already?”, I asked. “No, we just got here a couple of hours ago”, my friend answered. “Wait, what’s the date?” I asked. She told me yesterday’s date. Was I back in time? What’s going on? A million thoughts flooded my brain. “What if I was sent to the past to stop us from playing the Ouija board?”, I thought. I quickly grabbed the board and put it back in the shelf. “What was that for?”, my friend asked. “I- I don’t think we sh- should be messing with that board”, I stuttered. “Okay, so let’s tell scary stories instead”, my friend suggested. I was surprised that none of them complained about not playing the Ouija board. “Alright”, I said. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I took it out. I got a text from an unknown number saying: “You are fine for now, but you can’t hide forever”. I ignored it. “It’s always watching you”, my friend whispered. “What?”, I gasped. “It can see you right now”, she whispered again.
