Soaring with Dragons.
Born 1951, M, from Wilmington NC, United StatesThe Twins (both five years old- with just a minute difference) approached their Mother with serious “we need to talk” expressions on their faces.
She watched them perch at the Kitchen Island on their lime green stools (their favorite Perches in the House, since both stools could be adjusted for height, turn in a full circle, and had a climbing step on their stems). She smiled a deep inside precious smile for her to take out later and show other Mom’s and their Dad too.
Her smile was not only for the determined look on their faces, but their outfits. Caleb and Hunter were wearing Aluminum Pie Pans tied with twine and string across their chests. On their heads they had painted black and yellow streaks down their cheeks. Around their necks they had their snorkel masks - complete with snorkel tube and mouthpiece. Each was carrying the Hickory Walking sticks they had found on a Mountain hike weeks ago. They had brought those sticks home and scraped the bark off with sharp rocks until they were smooth as glass. And pretty.
She waited until they spoke (as they usually did) with one starting the sentence, and the other finishing it.
“Mom, we need Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches - at least two of them…”
(Hunter took over from his brother)
“We need the edges cut off, and then the sandwiches cut into tiny squares. Please.”
(Caleb gave his brother a hard look)
“Oh, and we are going to need some Oreos…”
(Caleb took over again)
“But break them up into small pieces, please.”
The young mother did as she was told. As her hands were busy making PB&J’s to specs, and breaking up the cookies into bite size chunks..she asked her children why the little pieces.
“We are going to lure the Dragon that lives in the roof of our garage out today.”
(That deep smile inside her that only Mothers share with their toddlers- grew as wide as the sky would let it)
“Really? Are you going to fight the dragon?”
Caleb and Hunter looked horrified.
“NO! You don’t kill dragons! “
(Hunter burst in to add)
“You fly on their backs…if you feed them!”
“Oh. I see.”
The two boys gathered the Dragon food in small plastic bags…went out into the backyard and laid their lures down in lines on the ground. They climbed up into the small tree house…and waited.
Thru the window of her kitchen, the Mother watched with a heart that could soar as high as any dragon- and thought:
“What a grand adventure. It only cost me two sandwiches and four cookies, which will feed the Ants just fine. And my kid will soar with Dragons.”
The smile in her heart burst into tears of joy.
In the tree house, two boys in their armored pie plates, waited for the Dragon to come eat.
