The Girl who Shook the land
Born 2000, M, from JAMSHEDPUR, IndiaThe girl who shook the land
By Ayush
Her jet black hair dangled as she checked the blinking street light from the corner of her large, oval, Kohl-rimmed eyes. Her royal blue crop top didn't get much attention except from the cats scanning roadside bins. It was a new moon night and darkness enveloped the small town of Jamshedpur like a blanket of coal. She had waited for this for the last 29.5 days and after this day she'd have to wait again until the next new moon night. She loved shaking earth...She and her friends. She didn't consider the 'tremble' evil...She just wanted to tickle the belly of earth… She loved it and she knew...Her friends loved it as well.
She was now at an open patch of land full of pieces of coal. These scattered pieces looked like shells of little creatures who lay still there because the world had no interest in knowing them. She stood there staring affectionately at the coal-pieces. She then said, almost in a whisper…
"Wake up, friends...It's new moon night again…"
The scattered pieces of coal all across the patch of land began to animate. There began forming a pair of glowing beady shapes at the centre of each coal lump. Those beady shapes were like their eyes. Then slowly they began emerging from inside the land… little pieces of coal with black rugged body shapes...Most were broken but their anatomy resembled that of human beings only they were the size of a doll and all charcoal black in color.
"Now begin…" she said.
No sooner did she say so than the little coal-lumps began to dance making uncanny postures. Soon the entire town of Jamshedpur began to tremble. Here they danced and there flower pots fell from the balcony of flats. Here they jumped and there vehicles parked on the street collapsed. Somewhere the beds shook...At other places the wall clock fell...somewhere people slipped from the stairs...Somewhere Hanging photographs fell shattering their frames. But She didn't care...Neither did her friends, they danced and danced while the street cats fell from the boundary walls and rushed for shelter.
A loud brutish growl from somewhere beneath the ground made the dancing coal-lumps go silent. Her body tensed as she clenched her fists. Meanwhile, the chaos in the town had stopped. People were out of their houses, some inside as well scanning through local news channels to trace the cause of the tremble. Many local news reporters called it a 'shallow earthquake'. Back where she was...The growl grew louder as from the distant darkness emerged a tall humanoid figure carved beautifully from a coal Boulder. Her Father had carved it...He was a brilliant sculptor. The material of his choice was coal. She never became the artist that he was but she had the special ability to talk to and understand her father's creations. Soon the coal-humanoid figure was in front of her. It was tall, almost as tall as a tree. It sat on its knees and spread its hand. She jumped on its hand, ran through its arm and sat on its left shoulder. He then stood up and made certain gestures with his hands while growling to which she replied, "Yeah I know...I know it's not right to disturb people this way but we were having a little fun...We meant no harm…"
The tall figure growled again making strange gestures with his hands to which she sighed and said, "Okay...I won't ask them to shake the Earth again...And yes I did well in my grammar test…"
The tall figure then growled melodiously shaking its hands. She looked at it and said smiling-
"Yeah...I love you too…"
She climbed down then turned to the coal-lumps and said, "alright fellas no more shaky shaky big daddy says no…"
That night Jamshedpur didn't tremble anymore. She and her friends enjoyed the rest of the night playing hide and seek in the ground, while the tall big daddy gazed at the night sky. Tomorrow they'll be but pieces of coal again. They'll wait to meet her as eagerly as she'll wait to meet them.
The cats gathered on the nearby tree, goggled at her while she tickled her little friends...The coal-lumps.
