The Mystery Pet
Born 2010, F, from Portland,Oregon, United StatesThe bright stars shone brightly over the city of Elway. The chirping birds joined in, trying to make me get out of bed. Refusing to leave, I let the curtains block the sunlight, but the delicious scent of waffles wafted up the stairs, taunting me. Finally, I gave in and threw off my covers, tumbling off of my bed. I dragged myself to my feet and stumbled out the door and down the stairs. Hoping that there was a plate piled high with waffles waiting for me, I shuffled into the kitchen. Sure enough, a plate with pink flowers painted around the center was stacked with golden-brown waffles. I sat down, my mouth already beginning to water. Shoving forkfuls of waffle into my mouth, I devoured the tasty morsels. My mother had said that I could go to the pet store today to find a pet. I still hadn’t decided what animal to get yet. It seemed as if everyone wanted me to get a different animal. Maria, my friend, wanted me to get a dog because her dog, Clawdius, had no one to play with. She said that we could train our dogs together. My mother however, thought that I should get a fish because they don’t shed fur everywhere and they are quiet. Father though, thinks that I should get a cat because they are cuddly. My best friend, Audrey, thought that a bird would be best because it would be fun to play with. I had decided to choose at the store. Flinging the door open, my mother and I walked to the car. When we got to the shelter, I looked around and was overwhelmed by the amount of cages surrounding me. There were cats, dogs, bunnies, snakes, birds and other animals. I walked past cages of all sizes and shapes and peered into an especially small cage with a rabbit inside. My eyes were fixed on the rabbit’s every move. Its long, silky ears twitched as it nibbled on a carrot that the shopkeeper had placed in the cage. It had a little brown body and the rabbit fixed it’s gaze on me as it finished gulping down the remains of the carrot. “That’s Nibbles,” someone said behind me. “Would you like to hold her? The shopkeeper asked. “Yes, please,” I said, my heart thumping. On the shopkeeper’s badge, it identified her as Lily. She popped off the top of the cage and reached in to grab the little furball. She then handed me the little scrap of fur and I carefully cupped the trembling fluffy ball with both hands. Stroking the rabbit’s fur, I gently cradled it in my hands. “I am going to get Nibbles,” I decided. “Good choice,” the shopkeeper said, taking Nibbles and plopping her back into her cage. My mother approved of my decision, and after she paid for Nibbles, a tiny food bowl, her food, and a mini water bottle that released water when Nibbles bit the nub, she grabbed Nibble’s cage and placed it on my lap as soon as I got in the car. As we drove home, I thought about all the things that I could do with Nibbles. I watched as Nibbles bounded around her cage. Soon, Nibbles lay down on the bedding and dozed off.
