Aisle of Islands
By Jesse Staub
1967 after 7 nuclear warheads were launched over the pacific ocean: The cold water slowly rushes up my legs then down them. My eyes flicker then open. My fingers dig into the sand and then push up. Once I got up I felt weak. Where am I? What am I doing here? I don't… Remember. I look around not to only see that I woke up on an island. I look around and see a lush forest and an aisle of 6 islands out towards sea. I could not see much but I noticed that there was only 6 islands and it seemed that I was on the smallest of all 6 islands. I look towards my side and see a big cliff leading up to another part that I could not see. There weren't any waves on this island except that it seems that it's always a high tide. I look back towards the forest and hear very strange noises, it sounded like it was some sort of deep moaning. For some reason I was starving.
I don't know how long I was asleep on the shore. An overly sized white crab with red dots all over it and black rings circling its eyes crawls out of the forest and starts to drag itself towards the ocean. I run towards it and grab it with both of my arms. I was starving, and I would eat anything that i could find.
I could barely hold it with both of my arms. I squeeze as hard as I could and then around a couple seconds later my arms collapse into the crab's body and green jell oozes onto my arm. I peel the top of the crab's shell off of it and then start to eat some of the meat in it, it has a weird texture, it was very rough on the inside, but more softer on the outside, it tasted okay. After a minute the after taste of it made me spit it out onto the sand. It wasn't that good raw I thought.
Later I grabbed a stick from the forest and drag it out onto the sand and then drop it onto the ground and then i run into the forest to try and find two rocks. I grab two rocks and then look back up to feel as if something was staring at me.
I slowly walk back out towards the open and then kept staring out towards the forest. I feel sand on my ankles and then I take another step back and then the feel of sand is spread across my foot. I look back out towards the ocean and place my two rocks onto the ground. After I walked towards the forest and grabbed a bunch of dead grass, I brake my stick into two and then use the small side and start to grind it between both rocks. A couple of sparks fly out of between both of the rocks, then the dead grass catches on fire. I surprised myself that I remembered how to catch something on fire without a lighter.
Later that night my eyes were baggy and tired. The crab hanged over the fire and as it seems all of the colors on the crab were fading away and leaving the crab just plain blue. I grabbed the shell and pull it apart until there is nothing just meat. A couple of minutes later I could barely hold myself up, the crab drops from my hand then my hand hits the ground. The next day I wake up with something on me. It had very long legs and had spikes across its back. I freaked out and I threw it off into the water. I was cold and covered with sand. The feel of myself being alone bothered me. Suddenly a sound of something trembling through the forest in front of me. I stand up. And look at the crab beside me as little beetles slowly ate it away. I look back towards the forest and the trembling has stopped. I step towards my side and walk towards the water. I notice the water crystal clear, and under the water was a multi-colored coral reef.
Sigh… I turn around and see a tail of something run back into the forest. I was startled and shocked. My arms and body shaking. A couple of seconds later my body stops. I fall onto my knees, and I now know that I'm not here alone. I stand up and run back to the fire pit. “I'm not safe here anymore” I mumble to myself. Suddenly the clouds turn dark grey and the rain comes flooding from the sky. I look around panicking, far away from me was a cliff made from boulders. I grabbed my stuff and ran as fast as I could towards it. Flashes after flashes of lightning and the bolts hitting the sea one after another rapidly. I feel the wet sand on my feet.
As soon as I touch the cliff I try to climb up it. Thunder constantly, mud rushing down my hands and arms then into my face. After a little bit i'm soaking in mud. The lightning still hitting the ocean. A roar of something comes from the forest. I look back and notice some of the trees moving, suddenly something comes running out from the forest. A dark green with a mixture of an orange, with a big spine on its back with really long legs and spikes covering its entire tail. Climbing as fast as I could up the boulders, the creature rams his head straight into the rocks beneath me making me slip. I held on tightly, my fingers burning. Step by step I climbed up the wall slowly. The creature still at the end of the rocks waiting for me to slip. I finally reach the top, my body covered with mud. I lay down gently in the mud, and wipe the dirt off my face. Breathing rapidly, I could not catch my breath. My ripped clothes soaked in mud, I layed there for a minute to catch my breath.
The rain stops and the thunder and lightning disappears. The sun glimpses out from under the dark clouds and the water soaks back into the dirt. I stand up and walk back over to the boulder made cliff. The trail of footsteps from the creature led into the forest.
I step away from the cliff and walk into the forest in front of me. When the little drops of water fell from the trees above me they looked almost like they were falling diamonds. Farther and farther I got into the forest, it seemed almost as if it never ended. The light from the sun beamed through into the forest creating beams of light. Unusual plants and flowers that I haven't seen before. Roses that were unusually big and more bright than normal. I felt as if I would not be found, because this place must not be on the map. Farther and farther i got into the forest and the more dense it got. The leafs darker and the flowers and plants were everywhere. I stop and sit on a big tree covering the sun. I was starving and thirsty...
