Tassie the Super Frog
written by Ian R. Hill
Chapter One
IT WAS A LOVELY summers morning around six thirty am the water was clear, butterflies fluttering and the frogs were croaking. Mrs frog was about the give birth to her first clutch of tad poles eggs for the season. Mr frog was on look out for any predictors lurking around their hospital ward. Mr Frogs brother happened bye to see how his sister in law was faring.. Hey Mr frog “how is Mrs Frog progressing with her births”, Mr frog said “all good so far, she has given birth to thirteen eggs” , “woo that's great” said brother frog.
Mrs Frog was birthing her second clutch of eggs. As the last egg appeared she could not believe her eyes. One of the eggs turned immediately into a tad pole, three times the size of any tad pole she had seen. The Tad pole put his head above the water and peered out, Mrs Frog called, come back, but it just kept swimming.. She called out over and over but it was too busy exploring the pond. As it swam it grew into a frog, catching mosquito's by the mouth full as swam to the other side of the pool. By the time it reached the edge of the pool it was fully grown. He climbed out of the pool and sat on the edge looking back. Mr Frog watching in amazement, his eyes bulged at what he was seeing. Mr Frog swam quickly to the other side of the pond after the new born where danger could lurk. He climbed out of the pond and cautiously hopped up next to the frog.
THE HUGE FROG TURNED and said “Dad look at me I am fully grown”, his father could not believe what he saw, he was three times the size of his father who was the biggest Frog in the pool, “what has happened to me Dad?” said “the baby frog”, “not sure” Mr Frog said. Patting him on his enormous chest and said quietly,” lets swim back to the other side of the pond where it was safe and we can talk about what's happened. The huge frog jumped back into the pool and the water splashed up the banks floating the other frogs out of the water. There was chatter all over the pond, “who is that? where did he come from?” Other families just stared in amazement at the size of the newly born frog.
THE DOCTOR WAS just entering the Pond hospital when Mr Frog and his son appeared. Mrs and Mr Frog were distraught both talking at once. The Doctor calmed them both down by speaking quietly and STROKING their shoulders. He went on to say, “three days ago there was a spillage from the factory up stream and chemicals were released into the pond, the pond maintenance crew had reacted quickly to remove the spill but some chemical had leaked into the Pond Hospital. The filters were engage but there is evidence some of the chemical had still been present in the water when you gave birth to your last clutch of eggs.
The Doctor checked the eggs and found they were not effected. He went onto say, “the chemical has caused rapid change in your son growth. The Doctor examined the baby but other than his size he was normal”. “The chemical has accelerated your sons growth from an egg to fully grown frog in a matter of hours. “ Will he be okay” cried his mother! The Doctor reassured the parents. “Can we take our new borns home” asked Mrs Frog, the Doctor replied “yes, I have examined the rest of your eggs and they are all healthy, but I will need to see your son again for some tests”, “thank you Doctor” said Mrs Frog.
Mr frog was home preparing for his new brood, he had constructed eighteen more beds but he was not sure what to do for their big baby. Mr and Mrs frog thought hard then said “we can build another home for the big one next door”.
Mr Frog had just purchased the three more blocks of land next to their house in preparation for their new family.
On two of the blocks they could build a new house for their big baby boy, but he was no longer a baby he was fully grown bull frog. In a matter of weeks he had grown three times that of the normal Bull Frog.
AS THE MONTHS flew by the big bull frog excelled at school and his abilities were remarkable, He could leap higher than any Bull Frog known and his strength was un heard of, he could pull out huge reeds from the pool edge and through them like a spear. He could build dams like beavers in fact Beavers asked him to help.
The naming ceremony was drawing closer, Mr and Mrs Frog were considering names for their new additions. They decided to call their biggest boy 'Tassie'.
All their friends from the pond were invited to the naming ceremony. They had a great party with lots of food to eat, refreshments to drink and dancing went on into the night.
The word had spread and frogs and insects came from ponds far and wide to see Tassie. They watched as he LEAPED FROM ONE SIDE ON THE POND TO THE OTHER IN A SINGLE BOUND, demonstrating his great strength and abilities.
The evil influences of the surrounding bush such as snakes had heard about this super Frog and would venture to the pond to prove they were stronger and better than him.
ONE BEAUTIFUL SUMMERS DAY by the pond, Tassies siblings were swimming and playing leap Frog while lurking in the murky dark shadows of the pond, a huge black snake lay and watched, he was waiting for a chance to catch and eat the frogs as they played. A beaver on his way to the dam site situated on the far side of the pond noticed the snake lying quietly observing Tassies brothers and sisters. The Beaver sounded the alarm to his brothers and pointed at the snake on the edge. They started throwing pieces of wood, stones and bark at the snake to scare him away. The snake disturbed by the Beavers slipped slowly into the pool and worked his way along the edge just below the waterline with his eyes protruding. Three Beaver raced around the pool and up to Tassies home, they knocked frantically on the door shouting! “Tassie come out, we need you”. Tassie was snoozing in the midday sun on his porch at the back of his house, he woke startled by the knocking.
He moved quickly to the front door and opened it, the Beaver were all TALKING AT ONCE. Tassie said “whats wrong?”, the beaver could not calm down they were all talking at hundred miles and hour. Tassie looked at them waving his arm , they were pointing to the pool, Tassie looked hard and then he saw the black menacing snake about to strike, he leapt, and in one huge bound he landed in the pool, grabbed the snake by the tail and swung it around and around above his head then let the snake go. It flew high in the air and landed in the top of a tree and caught in a tree branch ten feet from the pools edge and hung DEAD. The pool erupted with clapping and laughter, some of the occupants of the pool HUNG OFF TASSIES LEGS AND ARMS, DRAGON FLY'S landed on his head, others patted Tassie on the back for saving them.
HE WAS THE Protector of their pond. The word spread quickly how he had SAVED HIS BROTHERS AND SISTER and killed the deadly snake.
Chapter Two
TIME, …......well past getting up time, Tassie started the stir in his bed, the pond had been active for hours, his family were fishing and other pond residents were building extensions to their homes in anticipation of their new members.
Tassie was bored, he had out grown the pond and wanted to explore the world outside. He packed his bag cleaned up his house, Yes some boys do clean, and headed towards the door.
Knock knock on the door. Tassie opened the door and found his Dad on the porch looking out over the pond, he hopped up behind his Dad and put his arm around his shoulders. Gee your up early today dad, his father smiled and looked at his watch, it was eleven o clock, he smiled. “So son, what have you planned for the rest of today, dam building with the Beavers”, Tassie said “no Dad I have been thinking I would like to explore the world”, Mr Frog turned around and looked up at his Son, “yes son I knew this day would come, I could see you needed more out of life, “where will you go?”
“I have been talking to the Beavers and they have friends in a bigger pond about a 500 ft East of here”, “Okay son be safe and do not for get to write to us a croak message”.
TASSIE with one bid hop disappeared into the under growth with his bag over his shoulder.
The local nest of snakes had heard on the grape vine that Tassie was heading their away and decided to ambush him for killing their uncle black. They set up a trap around 300 ft from the pond and laid in wait.
While hopping along the track Tassie met a Beaver, “can I travel with you” the Beaver asked, Tassie replied “yes company would be nice”, the Beaver told him about the big pond where he lived and how much fun it was, and how friendly the residents were, we have mud slides, lots of different play areas and loads of food stocks.
Tassie and his new friend mossie d along the path chatting away when the Beaver suddenly stopped and looked around, he put his hand over his mouth and said very quietly “there are snakes about here and they hold you up and demand food or they eat you”. Tassie stopped and looked above the grass, the snakes laid still and hissed quietly. Tassie told the Beaver to stay alert. The snakes attacked, Tassie hopped catching the first snake by the tail, he swung him around and let him fly through the air, the second snake gripped Tassies left leg, Tassie pulled him free and again though him far into the forest. The rest of the snakes fled as fast as they could slither.
Tassie called to the Beaver “ are you okay?” there was no reply, Tassie called out again, still no reply, Tassie hopped back to where the Beaver was waiting but the Beaver had gone. Tassie searched high and low but his friend had vanished.
The Beaver had been kidnapped by the snakes and they had dragged him back to their hide out. The snakes would use the Beaver as bait to catch Tassie.
Tassie moved on towards the Big Pond, as he approached the pond all the residences fled and were hiding, the pond was empty. He looked about confused at the lack of life in the pond. Just out of Tassie sight his uncle had popped his head up to see what was coming. His uncle could not believe his eyes. he had not seen Tassie since he was born, he knew he was big but when he saw him his eyes grew wider. He croaking out “Tassie”, Tassie turned to see his uncle standing under a huge lilly leaf. “Uncle”, Tassie said “ it is so good to see you”. Tassie smiled and hugged his Uncle.
After greeting his Uncle Tassie went onto say “I met a friendly Beaver on the way here and we were attacked by snakes”, his uncle said “are you alright”, “I am fine but my friend has disappeared”, “Oh no! the snakes have taken him”. “What shall we do” said Tassie. His uncle patted Tassie on the back, “ we have been plagued by the nest snakes for weeks”, “the Beavers have tried to flood the snakes out by releasing their dams but the snakes always seem to escape”.
The pond life started to come out from hiding to see who Uncle Frog was talking too, He turned and said “do not be afraid this is my nephew from the pond 500ft to the west. They all started to clap and moved towards Tassie to welcome him to their pond. The Head Beaver came over to welcome Tassie, he said “my Beaver friends at your home pond have told me your an expert dam builder”.
Tassie told him he had met a beaver on the way here and during their journey they had been attacked by snakes. He went on to tell his story of how he fought two snakes and had killed them. Then snakes took off with his new friend. The Beaver said “we have had a lot of problems with the snakes, they just don't get it, we have to all live in peace together and there is room for all of us, but the snakes want to rule”. Tassie said “ lets plan our attack on the snakes”. The Beaver said “we can not defeat them, they are too strong”, Tassie said “yes they maybe but now you have me to help”, the Beaver looked up at Tassie and said “are you sure Tassie this not your fight”, Tassie said “I was born like this for a purpose and that purpose is to help others defeat bullies, beside they took my new friend”. All the pond clapped and cheered.
The Head Beaver “we will need information as to where the snakes nest is and how many there are”. “Our spies are all ready out there combing the surrounding bush”.
The pond settled down to their evening meal.
Sentries were posted covering the area around the pond while they waited for the spies to gather information crucial for their fight back plan. The Dragon Fly's squadron saw the brush move and signalled the pond, all the pond inhabited hid. Tassie peered over the lilly leaves watching in the direction of the movement, A beaver had come back from his recon, he said “the snakes were hiding twenty feet north of the pond in three big old tree stumps, and he had sighted the lost beaver, he was tide up with three snakes around his body”. Tassie said “we need a distraction”, the Beavers said “we can cut down some old trees very close to their hide out.
The plan was, the Beavers fall the trees together and it will appear to the snakes some think big is headed their way and they will come to investigate. Tassie said “that sounds good but be very careful fellows these snakes are very dangerous”. The Beavers said “do not worry Tassie we have handle them before”.
The Squadron of Dragons Fly's took off in formation checking out the path as the Beavers worked their way to their trees. At five croaks from Tassie they started to bite into the trees. The Dragon Fly's watched and signalled each Beaver how fast or slow to bite the old trees. Tassie watched as the trees fell all together. The snakes had no idea what was going on, they took off in all directions. Tassie leap ed at the big tree, two of the snakes uncoiled their grip on the beaver and moved away trying to find out whats was going on.
Tassie grabbed the last snake and pulled it off the Beaver and through it high in the
air. The other two snakes turned and came back at Tassie but he was too fast, he caught both snakes by their tails, tying them both in a knot around an old tree branch so tight, they could not move. Other snakes had seen what Tassie was capable of so they fled into the bush. Tassie chased them for three hundred feet south of the pond.
Tassie headed back to the big pond as victor against the snake army. He was greeted with a round of applause by the pond residents. They were so pleased he had driven the snake army far away.
They prepared a banquet in his honour. The Beavers came up one by one and shook Tassie hand. The Head Beaver had made a chain from reads and hanging in the middle of the chain was a carved frog holding up a snake high above its head.
Head Beaver waited until all the residents were seated around the pond, he raised his hand and all became silence, standing in front of Tassie he presented him with the chain and carving, Tassie took the chain and immediately hung it around his neck, he stood tall and beat his chest sending out the loudest croak they had ever heard. He was now protector of all ponds.
The word spread to all the ponds of how he had driven away the snake nest and killed one deadly snake and tired two up in knots.
