Forgiveness
Born 1999, M, from Chennai, India“This is a extremely inappropriate behaviour and completely unacceptable ma’am.”, the principal said.
I simply nodded along.
I am sitting here in my daughter’s school, and the principal is lecturing about the misdeed my child has done. Well, she is 10. How bad can it be?
“I will make sure to talk with her and find out what her problem is”, I replied.
“You do that. But as a school management, we need to take some actions”.
“I don’t care what you want to do. Just let me out of here”. I didn’t actually say that. It’s my mind voice. Being a highly experienced business professional, running my own company, I’ve often faced these kind of unpleasant situations where my mind voice tries to take control over me. And I’ve also learned to control it.
“I understand”. I replied, with a forced smile on my face.
I rushed out of the principal’s office and my daughter was waiting in the car.
“Hey, mom”.
“Well, got to say kiddo, for a girl who just got suspended, you sure seem happy”, I replied in a sarcastic manner.
“I didn’t deserve it”, she said with a sulky face.
“We’ll discuss about it after we reach home. Let’s have something to eat”.
You might wonder what kind of parent I am. My daughter got suspended and instead of scolding or lecturing her, I took her to a fancy restaurant to have a nice evening. Well, you see, I’m a practical mother.
We reached home and it was almost bed time.
“Go to your room, kiddo. I will be up in a minute”.
I freshened myself a little bit and went upstairs to hear the problem from my kid. I didn’t like the way the principal put all the blame on my child.
I sat on the bed and brought her close to me, holding her warmly.
“So, what happened?” I asked her.
“She cheated me”.
“Well, tell me more”.
“My friend Jessica, she humiliated me in front of the whole class. She called me names, told others I was retarded and made fun of how I look.”
“Uh”. I sulked.
“That’s not good. But that doesn’t mean you can go ahead and beat her up”. I replied.
Yes that’s what my daughter did. She slapped that Jessica girl and apparently, they ended up having a girl fight where they each pulled each other's hairs and stuff. And since Jessica was considered to be a “victim”, my child faced the consequences.
“Now, did I deserve it mom?. Why would she do that? Why would she act as a friend to me and then betray me?”
“Oh, honey, things happen. Life happens. There are all kinds of people in life you need to face every day. This is not even the beginning.”
“Well, I’m not sorry I hit her”.
“You should be”, I told in a firm voice.
“You hitting her is not going to change anything. You should have forgave her”.
“Why would I do that? I’m not dumb”.
“Who told you will be dumb? You will be dumb if you trust her again. By forgiving her, you become a better person”.
“I’m not convinced, mom”.
“Well, then, let me tell you a story”.
I cleared my throat and start telling the story.
This is a true story of 2 close friends. Let’s name them..um…Rachel and Monica.
Rachel and Monica were child hood friends, both very beautiful, intelligent and smart. They worked in the same company, in the same designation and the life was good. Rachel was a good hearted, kind, caring and passionate human being. While Monica was still good hearted, but selfish. She would do anything to get what she wants. And I mean, anything.
One fine day, their boss announced that second most important position of the company is vacant, that is, “Senior Vice President”. But the interesting part was, he has to choose one between two people, and the two people are, Rachel and Monica.
“It’s a difficult decision. So I’ve come up with an idea. I’m going to give you both exactly a week’s time, and you are going to show me a presentation on how to improve our company’s annual income by 20% by the end of this year. I don’t care if the concept is valid practically, but at least, theoretically, it should be feasible”, the boss told them.
“We’ll do it sir”, Rachel and Monica said in chorus.
“Good luck to you, Monica.” Rachel smiled and hugged Monica.
“Good luck, Rachel”.
They both went their ways. They have a week’s time. They need to hurry.
ON PRESENTATION DAY:
“Hello? Mom? Who’s number is this?” Rachel answered the phone. It was her mom. She was crying.
“What happened mom, Why are you crying?”.
“I’m talking from your Aunt Gillian’s phone”.
“OK, what is it?”.
“It’s your dad, Rachel.”.
“What? What do you mean?”
“It’s your dad. He’s gone.”
Rachel broke down into tears and couldn’t control it. She immediately decided to head to her parent’s house which was a 2 hour drive.
Rachel rushed into her house still in tears. “ Mom! Mom!”, she kept shouting.
Her mother appeared from the kitchen. She was fine. She was not crying. There were no people in the house. It was all calm.
“What happened?”, her mother asked.
“What do you mean what happened? You told me dad was dead. That’s why I rushed here”.
Her mother came forward and gave a tight slap to Rachel’s face.
“What the hell are you talking about? Why would you say that? Your dad is fine. What’s wrong with you?”.
“Rachel couldn’t understand what was happening.
“You called me from Aunt Gillian’s mobile!”
“What? Your Aunt never was here in the past 10 years. What’s got into you today? Calm down now and stop crying”.
Rachel had no idea what was going on.
“I must go now, mom”.
Rachel reached the office 5 hours late and the presentation was already done.
“Where the hell have you been?”, her boss shouted from her behind.
“I’m sorry sir, I got a call that my dad was dead, but he was not and...”.
“No use in explaining Rachel. Monica did the presentation and the board of directors loved it. And since you were not here, they termed you not trust-worthy. So, you missed the chance.“
Rachel was angry, terrified, sad and what not. But still, being the good-hearted person she is, she went ahead to congratulate Monica on her success.
But before that, she wanted to know who did that call. She went ahead to a Cyber professional, her close friend, to crack out the private number. After an hour of waiting, she finally found the original number from which the call was received. She tried calling the number, but it was not reachable.
She then decided to go to Monica’s cabin to Congratulate her but she wasn’t there. She decided to wait. She decided to read some magazines and pulled out the drawer in Monica’s cabin. Rather than a magazine, she found a SIM card. Suddenly, she was puzzled. Monica doesn’t even own a Dual SIM featured mobile.
She went ahead to try it. She removed the SIM card from her mobile and inserted the new SIM and dialed the office land line. To her surprise, the number displayed on the land line matched the number she got from cracking the private feature that morning. That’s when she realized. It was her. It was Monica who did it.
“Hey, what are you doing here?”, Monica asked from behind.
At this point, I stopped the story and looked at my daughter.
“Now, tell me honey, what would you have done, if you were Rachel?”.
“I would have told the truth to everyone, or rather, I would have hurt her badly”.
I smiled.
“But you know what Rachel did? She forgave her”.
“Why would she do that? That’s stupid”.
“No. It was not stupid. It was brave of her. And you know what honey? Even though she missed her chance of becoming the Senior Vice president, later on, she went on to become the President of the company, beating Monica”.
“Wow, that’s great. Did she fire her?”
“No. Rachel didn’t even tell Monica that she knew it was her who made her miss the presentation”.
“Why not?”
“Because it didn’t matter. This is the moral of the story honey. Truth always wins. It takes a really brave person to forgive people for what they have done. It doesn’t mean they should forget it. It means they should learn from it and make sure it doesn’t happen again. And forgiveness is the best revenge one can take. So learn to forgive people, my dear. But if you trust them again, you will be a foolish person. Learn the lesson, take the experience and move on. There are lots of people you have to face every day in life. Some are good, some are bad. You can’t change them, but you need to know how to deal with them. When you have true talent, no one can stop you from achieving something. Rachel was truly talented and qualified. That's how she was able to reach the top position of the company. Time answers everything, dear. You need patience. You will always get what you deserve. Now, tell me. Will you forgive her?".
"Yes mom, I will".
"Good".
“You said this was a real story right? So, who’s Rachel?. Do I know her?”
“You do, honey.”
“Well, who is it?”
“She is the one who is telling you this story right now”.
