A Word About Danger
Born 2007, F, from Portland, Oregon, United States“Oooh, that smells delicious…” I hear a voice behind me at the breakfast table. I whip around, but I don’t see anyone.
“I’m going for it!” I hear another voice, I look again, but still...no one. Then, in the corner of my eye, I spot a colony of ants, trying to steal cereal from the box, without luck. I walk over and try to talk to the ants. This is ridiculous, I tell myself, but I do it anyway.
“Hey, ants, my name is Katie, would you like some sugar instead?”
The ants simply stared at me. I was about to give up when the leader answered, “My name is Dallas, and never in our lives, have humans given us food nor have they spoken to us. We thank you greatly for your assistance.” I sprinkled sugar on the table, shocked, that I could really speak to animals, and the ants gratefully munched on the sweet lumps. Suddenly, the whole army of ants looked up in unison.
“What’s the matter?” I asked, “You don’t like the sugar?”
All Dallas said was,”Danger.”
“What? The sugar is danger?”
“No, I sense a small earthquake tremor, which means a disaster will happen here very soon.” Dallas explained, “Sorry, we have to go, and hide. We will see you soon, you’ll understand later.” The whole colony disappeared behind a crack, leaving me alone, trying to decide if I should believe the terrible news or not. Better safe than sorry! I decided to warn my school, but I have to get there first!
I glanced at the clock, I missed my bus! I ran as fast as I could, but it was no use. I was going to get detention...Right then, I spotted a wild stallion, whimpering on the street. I noticed right away that there was a thorn stuck in his hoof. I ran over and swiftly pulled it out. The stallion reared up, then finally calmed down. “Thank you!” he said. “Thank you so much! Is there anything I can do for you to return the favor?”
“There is one thing…” Soon I was riding on him, I felt as fast as lightning, and not much later, I arrived at my destination, school.
I dashed in right as the last bell rang, I heard a distant shout, “If you need anything more, just whistle!” I smiled to myself, as I turned to face the principle of my school. She stared down at me disappointedly, uh-oh, I thought immediately.
“No running in the halls!” She yelled.
“Mrs. Gillisky! There is going to be an earthquake soon, we have to get to safety!”
“Uh-huh.” She mumbled, turning to walk away.
“You leave me no choice…” I said to myself. I ran to the front desk, just as I heard Mrs. Gillisky call, “No running in the halls!”
My plan was safe, at least for now. I barged in when the staff weren’t watching and *bam*!?, I hit the emergency switch. Immediately, all the lights turned red, the whole school began to evacuate. Crowds of people stampeded out the door, I heard a faint shout coming from Mrs. Gillisky, “Don’t run!” she said.
Soon, everyone evacuated, but it was too late. The ground beneath us began to rumble. I had only one last idea in mind. *Whistle!* A whole herd of horses came galloping by with Dallas and his crew on them!
“Get on!” I yelled.
Mrs. Gillisky was shocked, but she ordered all the students to get on a horse. With three students on each horse, we were carried to safety.
A few cameramen came to interview Mrs. Gillisky, but she motioned over to me, in the middle of my conversation with Dallas and the horse I helped. The shocked principal, became even more amazed. She apologized to me and said, “I never should have doubted you.” Then turned to the camera to tell the whole story. That’s how I became internationally famous, and now I have a whole sanctuary of animals to keep me company. I continue to help citizens all over the world, warning them if any danger is coming their way.
