Hercules and Bubblegum and the Black Cat
Born 1947, M, from Zurich, SwitzerlandHercules and Bubblegum were sitting quietly on their favorite window seat by the lounge window in the hotel, when they heard loud voices coming from the kitchen.
“That cat is catching mice in the field again. It’s so cruel. Those poor mice being attacked by the brutal black cat”, shouted Mrs. Cook.
“Yes dear, don’t forget we brought the black cat into the hotel so that he would catch the mice in the cellar so that they would not creep into our kitchen”, replied Mr. Chef.
“Well it’s one thing catching mice in the cellar because we want it, compared to catching mice in the field just because the black cat wants to play!” continued Mrs. Cook.
“I suppose then we must keep the black cat indoors, so that he can’t catch the field mice, just catch the cellar mice,” summarized Mr. Chef.
Nothing more eventful happened further that day. The next day came again the shrieking voice of Mrs. Cook from the kitchen. “Who's been eating honey? Is it you again with your sweet tongue not being able to say no to sugar?” she accused her husband.
“Calm down dear, I have not touched the honey pot. Let’s look inside the pot for clues,” suggested Mr. Chef. And sure enough there were paw marks inside the pot into the sticky honey.
”Look”, shrieked Mrs. Cook, “It looks like a small bear has been helping itself to my honey in our pot!” Mrs. Cook pointed pointedly towards the two small toy bears sitting on the windowsill in the hotel lounge. "That one with the backpack has always looked suspicious to me!” accused Mrs. Cook.
“Now dear, you are really getting overexcited. They are only toy bears and cannot simply walk about in the hotel and wander into the kitchen,” commented Mr. Chef.
Things were quieter in the lounge during the day, even though hotel guests were coming and going they were the welcome quiet guests who made no unnecessary fuss about routine daily life. That evening the two bears appeared to be having a conversation. Hercules said to Bubblegum, “I am sure that Mrs. Cook was not really accusing you of stealing honey. She often gets carried away when she gets excited. You remember the many times that she has accused Mr. Chef or another person of something that is upsetting her!”
“Oh, yes,” replied Bubblegum adjusting his backpack, “I wonder whose paw marks are inside the honey pot? Let’s stay awake tonight and watch the events through the kitchen door."
Around about midnight, a whiskered nose appeared at the gap in the cellar door and pushed it open enough just for the owner to squeeze through. It was the black cat. He sniffed the air and looked carefully around the lounge and into the kitchen. The black cat must have thought there was no one about because he strolled into the kitchen just like the owner of the hotel.
There were climbing sounds, rasping sounds, scooping sounds, licking sounds and finally the sighing sounds of contentment.
In the meantime Hercules and Bubblegum had crossed to the kitchen door and were observing the whole escapade. Clearly the black cat was the honey scooper and was lying there with dazed eyes and honeyed lips. "So you are the honey thief!" exclaimed Hercules, shocking the black cat back to the reality of the darkened kitchen from the world of mind honey. "Yes I am. I get starving at nights because Mrs. Cook does not think it necessary to feed me. She thinks I am eating the mice, which on the one hand she does not want me to eat the good mice, but also does not want to feed me because she thinks I have eaten the bad mice -- which she finds to be pests. Can you understand the logic there?" questioned Black Cat. "I have great difficulties in doing my job as hired killer for one group -- but expected to leave the other group alone. It's enough to cause a catastrophe! Also I am sorry if you got into trouble about being the honey thief", said Black Cat to Bubblegum, "I heard Mrs. Cook accusing you, the bear with the backpack".
"Well we must suggest to Mrs. Cook or perhaps Mr. Chef, that it would be a good idea to feed Black Cat if they don't want him attacking the poor mice, or stealing from the honey pot", suggested Hercules. "In the meantime I suggest that we three sit by the fire for a while and exchange hotel stories", proposed Bubblegum. That they did and each evening the three sat by the fire in the lounge and exchanged stories of their adventures. It became an event for the all of the pets and toys in the hotel - the nightly gatherings by the fireplace.
In the middle of the night the small, the round, the cuddly, and the quiet pets and toys came down unnoticed into the lounge. Many problems were solved by the wise counsel of the toy bears and their friends. When the humans woke up and went about their business in the mornings they had no idea of the problems that had been solved in the night by Hercules, Bubblegum and Friends!
