Fear
Born 1999, M, from Chennai, IndiaF.E.A.R
The sound of claps echoed in my ears. It was late night past 2. I was lying on my bed with my eyes wide open, thinking about my performance on the stage tonight. I still couldn’t believe it was me. I don’t know how I overcame the fear inside me.
It wouldn’t make any sense if I start my story like this. You, the readers, must understand what is my fear I am talking about. And mostly importantly who am I?
So, Let’s have a look at my life.
Being the only the son to my parents, I was given a lot of love and affection by both of them equally. We were a middle-class family. Being content with what we have, and not thinking of what we could have, made our life easy. I generally don’t ask my parents for anything. Anything and everything I need, will be satisfied by them even before I think about it. I did study in a so called good school. There was nothing much good about it, except it gave us some good quality time with friends. One thing I liked in my life other than winding away time with my friends, was acting. I had a dream to become a drama artist. Not necessarily cinema, I wanted to portray on stage dramas like the good-old times. I had the dream, but not the courage to achieve it. A lot of plays did go on my school, but I didn’t join in any of them. Reason: FEAR. I was perfectly healthy, except I had a disease called Fear. I think it must have born within me. It comes after me wherever I go. I tried to overcome this, eventually ended up in failure. My parents helped me join in a acting class. I was passionate towards it. There are times, when I suspended my school works and went to the acting class. Seeing a lot kids like me, passionate towards acting, boosted my confidence. The coach was a director in cinema. Not much popular, but still, even to direct a single film needs a lot of hard-work and self-confidence. He made us act everyday, by giving us different situations. Any mistake from our side, will be spoken to us privately so as to prevent the embarrassment. Everything did go well, Until one day i was made to stand out of the school as my parents were yet to pay the school fees. I didn’t even know what the fees was and had no idea why my parents failed to pay it. I was sent home that day. When I told my Mom about the incident, I could see tears swell up in her eyes. I didn’t know what to do and I went to my room and closed the door. Then, late that night, I came out for a cup of water when i heard my parents discussing. It was only then I found out that my dad has lost his job and we were in financial debt. How come I never know this? I am the only son to them and I should know what happens in the house! I was heart-broken as I miserably failed in being a understanding son. The only thing I cared about was my comfort. I didn’t know that the acting class was so much expensive. The next morning, I went to my Mom and told that i wasn’t interested in going to the acting class anymore. But ofcourse as all moms in the world, she did read from my face that I was telling an lie. She told me everything would be all right soon. I didn’t go to school for a week. Then, My coach came to my house with a over-whelming invitation. He said he is going to portray a drama in a near-by village for which he needed crew-members. Also, there was one more sweet thing he said. No fees to be paid by the students who are in the drama, the students would be given prize money after the end of the play. Well, hearing this, I came back from my thought of depressing life. From the next day, I happily went to the acting class. That’s when I realized that only I was given exception from paying fees. When I asked my coach about this, he patted my shoulders and said “Money can buy anything, but not talent. You have the talent that I need, so I can buy you a place to display it”. I smiled hearing that. This was the first time I hear someone say I am talented other than my parents.
But still every time I rehearsed in front of my friends, my body would shake like I suffer from fever or something. Seeing this my coach called me to his house to have a talk with him. He treated me like his son. He gave me a cup of milk, and he sat in front of me on the chair. “FEAR:FORGET EVERYTHING AND RUN AWAY or FACE EVERYTHING AND RISE”, he started saying these words and looked at me. He continued, “ Fear is something with every human body. A person is brave only until he controls the fear. The moment the fear starts controlling him, he becomes a coward. The only way to overcome fear, is to face it. When a person is successful, it doesn’t mean he is fearless. Fear is a good thing, until it is in a specific amount. Do not let the fear guide you. Being a drama artist isn’t easy. It would be fearful for a person to act before thousands of crowd. But a person is an successful actor, only if he is able to hide the fear from his face and his actions. Your destiny lies beyond your fear. If you want to reach your destiny, then you will have to face your fear. The only thing we should fear is the fear itself . I hope this makes you understand something “, he had a smile on his face and he went in.
I went to home and thought about his speech for a long time. Interesting, I was admired by his wisdom. Then, the day has come. I was moments away from going for my first on-stage performance. My coach’s words echoed in my ears, which gave me confidence. The only mantra which was running through my mind was YOU CAN, YOU CAN,YOU CAN!!
Successfully, with God’s grace , I completed the drama and stood on the stage for the curtains to move. To my surprise, all the audience rose, and appreciated my performance. My parents seated in the front row, I could see the proudness in their eyes. I felt happy that I have made them proud at least in something.
After that, I got a lot of offers to do dramas as a child artist. My coach was with me anytime I needed him. My dad got his job back and our life jumped back to normal. I started to earn myself by doing various plays.
Now I realize that, what fear is actually meant. It is meant to give boost to a man to achieve his goal. Journey to success must contain fear. Fear is not an obstacle, it’s an emotion. Fear is just an choice and it could be dealt only with faith. Have faith on yourself, face your fears and rise about hate!!
