Hercules and Bubblegum meet the Terrible Twins
Born 1947, M, from Zurich, SwitzerlandMany visiting children to the hotel did not treat Hercules and Bubblegum with much respect. Children could be forgiven for not realizing that Hercules and Bubblegum were indeed the 'Hercules and Bubblegum' of story fame. This did however not give children freedom to trample on the famous bears just because the children thought Hercules and Bubblegum were merely toys.
Bubblegum suggested to Hercules that many children had so many toys that they did not know how lucky they were. Nor could such children distinguish between ‘special toys’ and ‘any old toys’. Many parents appeared to think that because they too were on holiday, they could expect some else to watch their children. Hercules replied to Bubblegum that because the two bears looked a bit scruffy and old, many children would assume that they could be trampled on.
Both bears had often resisted the temptation themselves to trample on sleeping disrespectful children during nap time when snoozing children had fallen asleep on the window seat where the bears usually were to be found.
Among all of the visiting children there were only a few who were respectful and as thoughtful of toys as well as of people. Jenny and Jerry were two such children. They were careful even with furniture and respected greatly anything natural. Hercules and Bubblegum had listed Jenny and Jerry among their favorite visitors.
Jenny and Jerry did not know that they were very privileged in having the two famous bears watch over them as guardian angels. This was a hidden blessing because even small hotels can seem as vast as endless cities to small children.
The Terrible Twins, Tommy and Tammy, had just arrived with their exhausted parents. Right from the first moment it was clear than trouble was brewing from Tommy and Tammy. They saw Jenny and Jerry apparently conversing with two toy bears and immediately Tommy mouthed to Tammy “Over there, two softies”.
In the chaos at the reception desk caused by the parents of Tammy and Tommy having a misunderstanding with the receptionist, the Terrible Twins saw they could take advantage.
Tommy and Tammy raced across to the window seat and picked up Hercules and Bubblegum from the hands of Jerry and Jenny, and raced with them through the hall and down the stairs to the cellar.
It all happened so fast that Jerry and Jenny immediately hurried after them. Round and round endless cellar corners, through dark and dank rooms, chased Jerry and Jenny after Tammy and Tommy who were still holding onto the bears.
After a while the cellar seemed very silent. Jerry and Jenny found
Hercules and Bubblegum dropped carelessly into a corner and heard the scuttling sounds of the feet of the Terrible Twins who raced up the cellar stairs. Then there was a metallic crash and the door was bolted from the other side.
After banging on the door for a while, Jerry said to Jenny who was holding Hercules and Bubblegum
“ It’s no use banging and shouting, no one wants to hear us”. After a while of head scratching and other uncertainty, Jerry swore he heard a voice telling him
“There’s another staircase at the other end of the cellar”.
Jenny did not know how but she seemed to know the way through the maze of the cellar rooms exactly to the other stairs.
They climbed the stairs and emerged in the lounge but around the other side of the fireplace where they had never thought to look before. They replaced the toy bears on the window seat and went to look for the Terrible Twins.
With no one around Hercules said to Bubblegum,
“It’s time for us to act and make sure the Terrible Twins do not disturb Jerry and Jenny again”.
“I know just what to do”, said Bubblegum, as he unpacked one of his surprises from his backpack.
All the children assembled for afternoon tea and cakes in the lounge, and the Terrible Twins made straight for the window seat pushing the toy bears aside. The other guests including Jerry and Jenny were forced to sit in the other seats more suitable for adults.
The hotel receptionist was offering cups of tea to the adults and she said to Tommy and Tammy,
” Would you two like to help yourselves to a piece of cake?” Tommy and Tammy struggled to get up but could not, they were stuck to the window seat.
“Well if you do not want to serve yourselves, I am sure the other children would be delighted to eat your cake as well”, continued the receptionist.
After a while of sitting and fuming, the parents of Tommy and Tammy went across to investigate.
“What is this?” asked Tommy and Tammy’s father, “This sticky mess all over the hotel seat!”
Their mother found a paper wrapper labeled ‘extra sticky Bubblegum’s bubblegum’ and knew that such was a favorite of Tommy and Tammy.
The parents of the Terrible Twins were tired of the usual cries of innocence from the two troublemakers.
“No cake at tea time for you two for the whole week”, said their mother. “Yes you can wait until dinner time to eat, where you will get food but not dessert”, added their father.
Hercules and Bubblegum of course said nothing to the gathered tea timers – how could they, they were toy bears! Jenny and Jerry were convinced that the toy bears winked at them, and Jenny thought to fasten the strap on Bubblegum’s backpack, which for some reason was open.
“This is going to be an interesting week,” winked Jerry to Jenny and to the two toy bears.
