The Capsule
Born 2007, F, from Portland OR, United StatesEllie’s nose was stuck to her living room window as a car drove into their driveway. Stepping out of the car, a girl with long, blond hair and sparkling blue eyes approached the door while Ellie’s brown eyes shimmered with excitement, thinking about all the possible ways to have an awesome day. In Ellie’s perspective, an awesome day was one full of adventure and spirit.
“OLIVIA!!!!!” Ellie screeched like an eagle. As Ellie’s mom quietly welcomed Olivia inside and briefly thanked Olivia’s mom for bringing her daughter over for a playdate, Ellie went to retrieve her activities’ list which basically involved all things having to do with NATURE. Ellie loved nature such as animals, plants, and especially anything adventurous. Any sunny weekend was the ideal day for Ellie to hike in the mountains where she could pick some earthworms to study or enter a dark, mysterious cave. Ellie always looked forward to a challenging and merriment adventure once in awhile.
Olivia was much different from Ellie, having pale, white skin the color of silk due to always being inside her room. Olivia would always say “Ew….YUCK!!!!!” whenever Ellie picked out a darkling beetle or examined a pile of dirt.
Ellie and Olivia were super different. They could barely recall anything they did together that was fit for both of them. Looking at the list of nature activities, Olivia made an unsatisfied face as Ellie sat on the sofa frowning. Ellie did not like the gloomy feeling they were feeling at this moment, so she stood up with a defiant face.
“We need to do something fun today.” Ellie said confidently. “Something that we will remember forever, even if we are 100 years old.”
“What should we do then?” Olivia murmured. “If you are going to dig soil and dump it in your room, I’m not going to like it.” Ellie and Olivia both knew that Ellie had dumped soil on the kitchen floor to examine how earthworms live, and that was a big mess.
“Anything!!!!!” Ellie shouted. “Like dancing!!!!!!” Ellie did an awkward ballet dance, and Olivia could tell that Ellie wasn’t born with a dancing talent. Ellie tried to twirl like a prima ballerina, which looked like a chicken twirling with crossed eyes. As Olivia giggled, falling to the floor, Ellie’s face turned hot red. “I CAN DANCE BETTER THAN THIS!!!” Ellie screamed. Ellie twirled even faster, which only made it more foolhardy. Ellie crashed onto the family vase five seconds later.
“Oh no……” Ellie said nervously, “What should I do????”
“Hide.” was all Olivia could squeak out.
Ellie ran to the attic with bright red cheeks, darting between boxes of her grandpa’s books and peculiar trinkets. It was not a few seconds later when Ellie found a wrinkled paper on the ground, her jaws dropping. Ellie rushed downstairs to tell Olivia.
“Where did you get THAT????” Olivia inquired.
“The paper was on the attic floor.” Ellie responded, while examining the paper carefully as if it was a piece of ancient gold. “It looks like some sort of map, which leads to……..THE BACKYARD!!!!”
“What’s in the backyard???” Olivia questioned.
“A treasure chest!!!!” Ellie replied, sprinting off to the backyard, aroused, when at the same time Olivia was glued to her spot, her face quickly turning paler as she wondered if perhaps there could be rubies, or DIAMONDS????
Olivia had to follow Ellie, reluctantly stepping on the dirt with a disgusted face. “EWWWWW….” Olivia said repeatedly.
Olivia and Ellie arrived at a big lump of dirt located at the corner of the backyard. “That big lump of dirt always made me wonder what was beneath it!!” Ellie said, while digging forcefully at the dirt. A wooden cover was visible within minutes of confident digging. Even Olivia was horribly interested in the treasure chest lying under her.
“WHOA!!!!!” Ellie said with amazement. Olivia couldn’t help but stare at the treasure chest with her mouth wide open. “Should we lift the chest up and open it?” Ellie asked Olivia.
“Okay, I guess.” Olivia said.
The girls tugged at the unwieldy treasure chest until it was planted firmly on the ground. Olivia, panting afterwards, whispered: “I don’t really want to admit it, but I’ve never been outdoors with such excitement, and I used so….much…..strength……” Olivia said between breaths.
“What’s inside?” Ellie questioned.
“The only way to figure out what’s inside that chest is to………...OPEN IT!!!!!!!” Olivia said with a grin.
Ellie and Olivia were overly eager to figure out what was really inside the treasure chest, but there was something that was stopping them from doing so: A simple lock.
“WHAT????” the girls both screamed. Ellie tried picking the lock, but it was too hard to pick. Olivia then did something really absurd: She kicked the treasure chest with such a force that she crashed onto the grass field, screaming “OUCH.” with a laughing tone.
Being absurd can really help sometimes, too, when it comes to a lock buried in the dirt for years. Ellie and Olivia stared at the treasure chest as the flimsy lock fell off the chest, lying next to the girls.
“HOORAY!!!!!” Olivia and Ellie screamed, feeling happiness spread over them.
Everything felt successful at that moment, until Ellie opened the chest. The girls’ jaws spread open in surprise.
Ellie and Olivia’s minds were imagining a spectacular sight of gold coins, glamorous necklaces, and shimmering diamonds, but there were CDs, photos, and obsolete objects in the place of their wonderful imaginations.
Disappointment spread throughout the girls. There was not even one single diamond or ruby.
Suddenly, a voice could be heard saying: “I feel nostalgia when I see that chest.”
Ellie and Olivia’s hearts pounded heavily, imagining a man with a sack behind his back, ready to stuff them in. Instead, they saw a frail man smiling with wrinkles spread over his face.
“YOU SCARED US, GRANDPA!!!!” Ellie screamed.
“You know,” said Ellie’s grandpa, “YOU FOUND MY CHEST!!!!!!!!”
“A chest of dusty objects??” Olivia questioned with a face of disgust.
“Oh, THAT’S MY CAPSULE!!!!” Ellie’s grandpa replied, coughing for shouting that loud.
“That's why it’s so dusty!!!” Ellie realized.
“Can we make our own capsule, then???” Olivia asked.
“Sure!!!!! I’ll get the camera!!” Ellie’s grandpa replied happily.
A few minutes later, the girls were standing on the lawn making silly poses, while Ellie’s grandpa snapped photos from his Polaroid instant camera. The photos that printed out were of two happy girls with big smiles on their faces. Ellie and Olivia packed their capsule with many other memorable belongings such as books, essays they had both written, pictures they had drawn, sour gummy worms, and some various travel souvenirs.
Time passed as the sky turned dusk. The capsule was safe in the dirt, waiting for two girls to open it 20 years later. Ellie and Olivia admired their hard work, while grinning happily. A capsule was the perfect idea for wonderful memories, especially for those who value nostalgia. The girls both knew a capsule was the best kind of treasure ever. Ever.

05/24/2020That was a really FUN story to read, Sadie! And you write beautifully, too. I could really experience the relationship between the two sisters, and how different they were. So it was cool that they discovered something they could both do together. Great job. Thank you so much for all the great short stories for kids you've shared on Storystar. I hope there will be more of them in the future.... Happy Short Story STAR of the Week, Sadie! : )
