The Evening Before
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United StatesIt was the evening before classes started at Piney Point High. Josephine Hart was stretched out across her bed watching tv. Her step sister Amber Foster came into her room with two bags of clothes. “You should have came with me,” said Amber as she was sitting the two bags on the bed. “I know it is like fashionably late but I was planning on wearing the same clothes that I wore last year,” said Josephine. “It’s not that,” said Amber. “What is it then?” asked Josephine. “Just forget it you would not understand,” shouted Amber picking up the two bags and storming out of Josephine’s room.
Amber was going through her closet and came across a pair of jeans. She took the jeans off of the hanger and started looking at them. Tears started rolling down her cheeks as she continued to stare at the jeans. “How could I have been so mean to Joey,” thought Amber as she walked over to her bed, sat down and started crying.
Josephine walked by and saw Amber sitting on the bed crying. She walked into Amber’s bedroom and sat down beside her. “Sis are you ok?” asked Josephine. Amber handed Josephine the jeans, she had taken out of the closet. “Do you remember these jeans?” asked Amber. “I bought them for you last year,” said Josephine. “This is my favorite pair of jeans. Do you know why?” asked Amber. “No, why?” asked Josephine. “My dad and your mom got engaged about a month before your 17th Birthday,” said Amber. “I remember and I was like so totally excited because not only was my mom happy again for the first time in years but I was going to have a sister,” said Josephine. “On your Birthday they both gave you money to buy what you wanted and asked me to take you shopping so we could start building a relationship as sisters. We went to the mall and naturally being selfish me, we had to stop and look in a window of a clothing store and I saw that pair of jeans,” said Amber. “Ok, I am like confused how were you being selfish?” asked Josephine. “Because the purpose of the trip was not for me to look at or buy clothes. Then I made the comment that I loved the way the jeans looked and wished they were mine,” said Amber. “If that was not selfish enough we ran into some of my friends and I left you to go hang out with them,” continued Amber. “I think, I told you to go ahead and hang out with your friends while I looked around,” said Josephine. “You did, but I should not have left you to go be with my friends,” said Amber. “While I was not watching you, like I should have been doing, you went into the clothes store, bought the jeans with your birthday money, and put them in the driver's seat of the car,” continued Amber. “I did it because I love you,” said Josephine. “I acted like a total jerk tonight and I am very sorry for snapping at you” said Amber. “It’s okay, but what was bothering you?” asked Josephine. “I was thinking about how my mom would take me shopping for new clothes or I would go with my friends just before school started. Today, I was by myself and it just got to me emotionally,” said Amber. “You did go a little bit overboard, but I see where you are coming from. But you know what?” asked Josephine. “What’s that?” asked Amber. “You are no longer by yourself. You have a sister that loves you and will be there if you need someone to talk to,” said Josephine hugging Amber. “Thanks, Joey. I will try harder not to let my emotions get the best of me,” said Amber.
Amber came back into her bedroom after taking a shower. She picked up a picture of her mother that she had on her night stand and placed it next to her heart. “Why after 11 years does it still hurt,” said Amber to herself. She sat down on the bed and starting crying.
Karen Hart, Amber’s step mother walked by her room and saw Amber sitting on her bed crying. Karen went into Amber’s room and sat down beside her. “You must be missing your mom,” said Karen putting her arm around Amber. “It has been 11 years since the accident, but there are times that it seems like yesterday. I miss her so much,” said Amber crying. “There is a big difference between death and divorce. It has probably been a whole lot easier on Joey, because if she wanted to she could go and visit her father. I will never get a chance to see or talk to my mom again,” continued Amber. “It has not been easy for Joey,” said Karen. “What do you mean?” asked Amber. “Joey was five years old when Allen walked out on us,” said Karen with a sigh. “He married this woman, he met at a bar, and they had three children that Joey has never met,” continued Karen. “Oh-my-gosh, Joey has stepsiblings. Does she now?” asked Amber. “Yes,” said Karen. “She has never told me about her dad or having siblings” said Amber. “Joey, never talks to anyone about it,” said Karen.. “Oh-my-gosh, Joey is a lot stronger than I am. I don’t think I could keep something like that bottled up,” said Amber.
Amber put the picture back onto the nightstand and hugged Karen. “I may not always show it or say it very often but I am glad that you and my dad got together. It has been somewhat easier having Joey around and I love you,” said Amber with tears rolling down her cheek. “I love you too. I want you to remember that I will never replace your mother. You will have your share of ups and downs but if you ever need someone to talk to, I am here for you,” said Karen.
