December 7, 1941. 7:30 AM
James was on his way to his friends house. It was a sunny Sunday morning in Hawaii. He lived near Pearl Harbor, the military base. It was December 7, 1941. James checked his watch, it read 7:51 AM. He was going to get his friend to play baseball. The air felt silent but that was interrupted by a stick snapping stopped him. Then a bush to his left shivered, causing him to cautiously step toward it. Suddenly the bush broke in half and a little boy jumped out. He was very energetic.
“Hey my names Robert what's yours? Wanna play, my mommy said it's okay! Oh and by the way I’m five how old are you.”
“Hold on, where is your mommy?” James asked.
“I’m not sure, I saw her a minute ago,” Robert said.
“Let's go find her.” James said, he started following Robert. They walked no more than a few feet before a huge blast shook the ground. There was screaming in the distance and another blast hit the ground.
“What's that?” Robert asked in alarm.
“Come on!” James shouted, they started running as fast as they could. Blasts rang out in the air and smoke filled the sky. James wondered if those blasts were bombs. No, he thought who would bomb us? Another blast fired and a big fireball filled the sky. Suddenly Robert fell to the ground.
“Get up!” James shouted. He grabbed Robert. They ran through a mess filled with debris. Shots rang out through the air, both James and Robert coughed cause of the smoke. Robert tripped again this time smacking his head on a huge sheet of metal.
“Are you okay?!?” James said. Robert appeared to be knocked out cold. “HELP, SOMEONE PLEASE!!” James shouted again and again. Finally after a minute of shouting a man came up to him.
“What's wrong?” He asked.
“He smacked his head on that piece of metal,” James said “is he dead?” The man placed his hand on Robert's neck.
“No, he is alive, but he got knocked out.” James was out of ideas of what to do next.
“Will he be okay?” James asked the man.
“We have to take him away from here, away from the bombs and other stuff.” The man said “Come on let's take him to my car.”
The man and James picked Robert up and carried him to the man's car which was not far away. They barely got inside before a bullet crashed through the back window shattering it.
“DRIVE!!!” James shouted. The man slammed on the gas pedal and the car jetted forward. Another bullet skipped off the hood of the car denting it.
“Dang it!” The man said “that’ll cost a fortune!” The car weaved in and out of traffic. At one point the man drove off the road and weaved around trees to avoid a crash! They pulled to a stop at a house in the middle of nowhere.
“What's this?” James asked. There was a big field with a house in the middle, it looked like it was a hundred years old!
“My house,” the man said “by the way my name’s Bill, but you can call me Billy.”
“Okay Billy, should we take Robert inside?” James asked. The man seemed unaware of James, he was more intent on the planes in the sky and the smoke that filled the air. “Something wrong?” James asked again.
“No, of course not, let's take Robert inside.” They carefully lifted Robert out of the car and hauled him to the house. They set him down on a ripped couch, Billy got everyone water and soon after Robert woke up.
“Where are we?” Robert asked.
“We are at Billy’s house.” James said.
“Who’s Billy?” Robert asked.
“I am,” Billy said coming out from the other room “we brought you to Billy’s house after you got hurt.”
“Will I be okay?” Robert asked.
“Of course,” Billy said “you just need rest.” Then all of a sudden Robert looked bothered.
“What's wrong?” James asked.
“My mom, where is she?” Robert said “did she die?”
“I don’t know, once you are better we will look for her, but for now you need rest.” Billy said. Robert didn’t put up a fight, he just flopped back on the the couch and fell asleep. James and Billy sat down at the counter to talk.
“How will we find Robert’s mom?” James asked, Billy seemed concerned.
“I don't know,” Billy said. He didn’t seem concerned though. The next morning the three guys got into the car and drove toward the wreckage.
December 9, 1941. 6:00 PM.
It took two days before the happy moment when Billy almost slammed into a woman crossing the street with his car. At a closer look Robert realized it was his mom. He kicked open the door and ran to his mom and gave her a big hug.
“Little Robby I was so worried!” She exclaimed.
“Me too mommy,” Robert said back.
Later that day Robert found his house. It was smashed and ruined from the bombing. Chairs were overturned, tables were smashed, the door was cracked. Robert and his mom went to live with Billy. Then later James was able to find his mom walking along the side of the road. They were reunited and by some miracle their house was fully intact. James said goodbye to Billy with a handshake. They watched the car drive away until it was out of sight.
Facts and Fiction
This was historical fiction so most of it was made up then historical elements were added. For instance James, Robert, Billy and every other character was made up, but the setting (Pearl Harbor) it real and so is the bombing. 2403 people died during Pearl Harbor, the day after president Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his famous speech. He said Pearl Harbor is a day that will “live in infamy”. There you have it, you were just reading facts and fiction!!!
