My dad
I remember a day when my father the Postmaster of Granite Falls, Wa. He was crazy. He worked 4 hours on Saturday and 2 hours on Sundays for which never got paid and wasn’t even supposed to be doing. He was born in Vancouver B.C. Canada which made a first American born generation Swedish male. He served in the Korean War. He ran a Petty Officer Club for a Mash Unit. He was a supply truck runner and a spy. He studied their maps. He knew the Korean roads my heart. He brought big bags of coffee from Brazil that he would grind up at night when he was doing his books. He was quite the wheeler dealer at the end of war. He gave a nun who ran an orphanage the sum of $10,121.70 amount he had accumulated and had when he closed and burned his books. But there was a condition she had to shear to God that she wouldn’t tell anyone she had it. And she had to spend it very wisely. He asked me do you know why I did that son. I will tell you. It was blood money. You better never accept blood money or I will disown you. Do you hear me? I said, Yah, yah, yah I hear you dad. Despite my all my thinking when grow up, I am not gonna like him. It turn out I am so much like him it’s pathetic. Well anyways, he always made sure the troops got coffee, clean socks, and tobacco if they smoked free of charge he would send it off on the daily supply run to the troops on the front lines. He was out on a supply run and from a point where he could see for like 50 miles with his binoculars. He saw the million Chinese troop movement coming. He reported to Command headquarter there is massive I repeat massive troop movement and he gave their coordinates heading our way. Command headquarters responded hold your position and report over. He responded I can’t read you repeat over. Command headquarters responded hold your position and report over. He responded I can’t read you over I am putting the petal to metal. I am getting the hell out of here over & out. He managed to get back to Command headquarters in his bullet ridden supply truck. He was immediately met by their version of Radar who grabbed his walkee talkee. He swat it out with one that didn’t work. My dad asked can I have 5 minutes? I crapped my pants. I want to take a quick shower first. He pointed to a bullet graze on his helmet. And their Radar said I will tell them you are on your way you will be here shortly he needed to take a quick shower first. And that was that. Need I say he loved to watch the TV program Mash? He came to me saying there was a fire in St. Louis our family’s military files have all been destroyed and they say the fire started with your military file what was in your file son? I responded I wouldn’t know what you’re talking about dad. He said you’re lying you can’t lie to me and get away it you’re too good for that. What was in your military file son? I looked him straight in the eyes and said some things are better left unsaid. He responded what! I can’t believe you. You have taken a section 8 bringing total disgrace to me and our family. And all you have to say is some things are better left unsaid. Your uncle Earl he is heartbroken you know how proud he is about his about his military file. He will never going to forgive you for this. Then I said to him. You heard me dad. I said that’s right some things a better off left unsaid and this is definitely the case. And I walked out. I got caught up in the Iran/Contra Affair when it was happening. What I knew was Top Secret. And the thing is anyone who releases Top Secret information their ass is grass.
