HELP
‘The waves lashed over my bare feet, covering them in salt, the hot sand burning my skin. I looked around me, some people were splashing in the sea; others lying under umbrellas reading magazines or drinking cool lemonade. I just sat there, looking around, I had nothing to do. Lying under umbrellas, like adults was not my style and I just don’t like myself getting covered in salt by the waves.
“Katy, Katy!” I heard my brother shout, I looked about to see him quite far from where I was.
“What happened?”
“Mom has said that you will have to accompany me in the sea, mom and dad both are busy.”
“Busy? Doing what? Why can’t you go alone?”
“I don’t know why they are busy, you have to accompany me because I am too young and can drown,” he shouted back.
Huh!! I trudged along to where my brother, Marco, was standing. He has sea blue eyes with a twinkle of naughtiness in them just like our mother and blonde hair like the rest of us: our father, mother and me. I have brown eyes and a light skin just like my father and like to keep my hair in a fishtail. One important thing, my real name is Catherine, but all my family members like to call me Katy.
Now I was holding Marco’s hand and we were getting washed by the waves. Marco was enjoying it; although I wasn’t, getting your hair wet and getting covered in salt and ,seaweeds, if there were any, isn’t my type. Suddenly, something hit my ankle. ‘A seaweed, not likely; a crab, yes probably. Wait not a crab.’ Oh! I put my hands under the water and grabbed whatever had hit my ankle. I put it up under the sun so I could see what it really was. Not a crab for sure. It was like a wine bottle, covered in sand and seaweeds which prevented me from knowing what was inside. The cork was made of wood, through which water had seeped in. I wiped the sand and the seaweeds off from the bottle with my hands. Inside lay a paper, all wet and blotchy. I quickly took it out; I opened it and read it-help. Nothing else, I turned the paper over. I gazed the bottle from the inside, from the outside-there was a seal, one which I had never seen before- and there it was, something crucial. I put the paper back inside, grabbed Marco by his wrist and ran towards mum and dad. Marco was wailing beside me, but I was so engrossed over my discovery I didn’t understand a word he said. “Mum, dad look what I found,” I raced over to them. I handed them the piece of paper and specifically showed them the seal. “Nothing much, it is nothing much of importance,” replied my dad. But I knew him better than that, his voice clearly told that something was definitely up..........
“Katy, wake up, your friends have arrived. Dad and I are going to meet a client. So, you will have to look over your brother. Anyway, you don’t need to bother, your friends are all over him,” said my mum giving me final instructions for the day. I quickly dressed up in day clothes and went to my friends: Trichina, Mary and Joey. We had planned to have a good look over Miami.....
.......
“Oh! The rocks, let’s go play on them. You know what, seriously, I think the whole bottle thing was a prank,” said Trichina. I had told all my friends about my discovery on the beach. We had made some quite wild guesses from where it had come- some ideas from books and movies- my brother, only five, also made quite good guesses. “ We are so old to be playing on these rocks, we will look like maniacs,” replied Mary. “No, we won’t, if someone asks or says something we can just say that we were practising mime and thought that these rocks were the best place,” said Joey defending Trichina. They both high-fived each other. The idea didn’t make any sense. I just stood there, not knowing what to say, and then finally after a long pause I said, “Listen, you really want to do this? People would so easily buy into our mime idea, right?” I said in a sarcastic tone. Whether or not Trichina understood it, she urged us forward towards the rocks. Before knowing what had happened I was standing there, in front of the rocks, Joey leaning beside me. I was standing next to Joey. Trichina started to climb the rocks when-
“AAAAA!!” I heard a scream, right beside me. I looked by my side- no Joey. “Trichina, Mary Joey has disappeared, there is definitely something wrong.” Was there something behind the rocks? I thought to myself. The other two with my brother looked over my shoulder and gave a gasp. Ok! Now they realised what I was saying was true. I went to the place where Joey was leaning and I leaned too......
I was swallowed in darkness. Everything disappeared, my friends, my brother and Miami. What would happen to my brother, my friends could take care of themselves but my brother..... I just removed this idea, right now I would need to think of how I was going to prevent myself from hurting myself when this great fall would end. If the surface was hard I could surely break a bone or two. Probably the rocks have some opening, in which I have fallen, I thought to myself.
‘Thud’ I landed, I didn’t hurt myself. I felt around my surroundings to see sand beneath and Joey standing right in front of me. “I hope the others follow us here.” Joey was just not listening. “Look at the crystals, so big and shiny and bright. Just look at this place,” said she, pointing at all the things. Surely, there were huge, spellbinding crystals all over this place. The silence was broken when all the other three landed, one after the other. I was right. I got up from the ground and beckoned the others to move forward quietly. After walking a few metres or so we saw the crowd, hustling and bustling. I am sure that there was some kind of tension around, you could feel it in the air. Trichina nudged me and pointed towards the people. They were not ordinary, not even people for what I know. Their skin was purplish-pink, their heads bald their thin arms having only three fingers and their legs only two toes. The clothes they wore started from their neck, not covering their arms, going till their knees and after that became transparent. The eyes were emerald green.
Now, everyone one of those creatures was looking at us. I was still holding the bottle from yesterday. One of them came forward and said, “You are our saviours, who will help us, the Dooblecock tribe. The Anterlister tribe will destroy us with a powerful weapon they have made. The weapon shall burst in three hours. If it is not disabled then it shall burst. The time can only be set once and also disabled only once. That is the speciality. If once it is disabled it cannot be activated so, the members of the Anterlister tribe will not disable it but you, (he said pointing towards us) can. You all are our saviours.”
I looked around confused; we were only twelve and thirteen year olds. How could we save a whole tribe? So, I said, “I am really sorry, but we are too young to be able to save a whole tribe. You must be mistaken, someone else is your saviour.” I looked at the others hoping for the assurance that I had done the right thing, but there was none. Then, my brother unexpectedly spoke, “NO! We are your saviours, we got the bottle with the paper, and we shall save you. Being young does not matter, what matters is the courage inside you and (looking at me) if not us then who will save them, not a single soul knows about this place.”
My brother said all this; he said it as if he were a great warrior. Leave alone; he doesn’t even know how to kick a ball. Now, it would depend on my friends, and one thing was obvious that they would definitely take my side. Hah! We aren’t staying in this strange place anymore.
Mary said, “See, I am sorry Katy, but your brother is right. No one else knows about this place. So we will have to do something, time is running out, we could just try are best even if we aren’t successful. We are their last hope. No more discussions. Let us get straight to work.” At this the other two nodded approvingly. I was shocked; could this really be happening to me? But if I give it a thought probably they are right. Soon, we were moving towards the Dooblecock tribe’s weaponry storage. We also got the additional information that the weapon could detect their tribe if they entered the area of the Anterlister tribe. So, we could only go as we weren’t part of any tribe. We chose the weapons which suited us best and went towards the Anterlister tribe. The entering area was not guarded, because they knew if any of the Dooblecock tribe members entered, a siren would go off. Good for us.
“c’mon, we all need to be safe. Keep your weapons by your side. Remember the instructions: all the tribal people living here have emerald green eyes and the weapon can only be seen by brown eyes, which is yours Katy. So, you will have to tell us when you see the weapon. A cuckoo whistle if things are all right and a sparrow whistle if things aren’t. Got it?” said Joey. She is really good at being the leader. We all gave thumbs up. Off we go, the last and final hope. We do have responsibility on our shoulders. We need to save the day. Two hours, 50 minutes left. Here we go.
We quietly entered, keeping on our tip toes, no sign of guards. We moved forward. We looked here and there, for any signs of danger. The place was dark and eerie; the ceiling was dark and covered in cobwebs, bats dangled upside down. The floor was covered in a thick layer of dust. Shivers ran down my spine. Suddenly, we heard heavy footsteps, like those of a giant. I looked around in a hurry, for any place to hide. I saw a boulder, but quite small, we didn’t have time. I quickly grabbed Marco and told the others to follow me. We reached there in the nick of time. Two humongous creatures, covered in green slime, with big muscles and blotchy clothes entered laughing. The one with white hair on top said, “Now, no one can do anything, the weapon will burst in some time. The suite to prevent us from getting hurt has been distributed; the weapon lays at the most safest place- the centre tower of Anterlister.” He laughed and the both of them then went another way. Our first hint.
“Trichina, we will have to split up. All of us together are an easy target. You and Mary team up, Joey is fine alone. I will go with Marco,” I whispered. She nodded, but I knew she was nervous and scared. All of us were, but we had to do this. Save the day. “So, our meeting point will be the centre tower of Anterlister. Remember cuckoo whistle if you have reached there and a sparrow whistle if you have not reached or are in danger,” said Joey. We gave each other a tight hug before departing, it could be the last time we were seeing each other.
My brother and I walked the way which the two people had gone. Joey went to the east and Trichina and Mary to the west. The real game began now. We entered a place that seemed like a market. We could not attract attention, we looked totally different. I saw a stall selling those green slimy outfits. We had to get our hands on those somehow. I told Marco to throw something at the shopkeeper and then run behind some hay like thing which lay just close to him, till then I would have gone and taken some of those outfits. Marco threw, I ran to the stall. Thankfully, the shopkeeper had been distracted. I took away the costumes and was just about to leave when the shopkeeper stopped me, “Who are you and what are you doing here?” I was frozen at the spot, what could I say, “Ummmm.... I...This is my Halloween costume, what I am wearing now. I was just passing by.” The shopkeeper gazed me up and down. He then said, “Very well shoo off!” I was just about to go, when something must have got inside him because he started to shout, “Intruder, intruder!!!!!” I saw Marco standing waiting for me, I gave him a nod and we started to run. Shoving, pushing people out of the way, I ran and ran, people were running after us. I saw a house, grabbed Marco and ran to the left, and went behind the house. I started to pant, things were not going well, surely the shopkeeper would tell everyone and people would be after us. My leg hurt, I looked at it, I had badly cut my knee, and blood was rapidly flowing out. Oh! What could I do? Marco looked at me, his eyes filled with fear. Suddenly, I heard someone shout, “Over there, behind the house.” No not now, my leg ached. We started to run again, and then I saw it- the centre tower of Anterlister. A smile spread over my face.
I hurried there. All the others were waiting there(I hadn’t heard the whistles, anyway). I am assuming that the weapon is kept here. As we entered, through the door, we saw guards rushing our way. My fear had been true, the people had been informed. We ran towards them, keeping our weapons ready for use. I had a long sword. I just moved it, cutting people who came in my way. Something hit my leg. I staggered, I had been shot. In front of me stood an elevator. I pressed the button and it opened. I went inside, clutching my left leg. It hurt a lot. I couldn’t bear the pain. Then I heard a shout, I frantically pressed the button again. The elevator opened. I saw Mary lying on the ground. A deep cut on her cheek. This could not be happening, tears swarmed my eyes. I staggered towards her, she opened her eyes, “I am fine, go to the elevator. The weapon lies in the fourth floor....” her voice trailed off. I felt reluctant to move, but here was no other option. I limped to the elevator. I Looked back to see Trichina, Joey and Marco running towards me. I stood there motionless. The other creatures were shooting bullets at them; they ran and came inside. I quickly pressed the button 4. The lift started to move upwards. I could feel myself crying. What would happen to Mary? “Mary, she has been hurt,” I mumbled. Trichina came over to me and tried to console me. She too wasn’t in a good state, none of us were. The lift opened, I saw the weapon right in front of me. I heard shouts of the guards, they were coming up the stairs, “I will go alone, you all be here, if anything goes wrong I will give a sparrow whistle.” Saying this I stepped out and went towards the weapon. The lift closed behind me. The guards emerged, I quickly snatched the weapon. A burning sensation zipped through my body, I lost my balance. Before I could say something............
“Katy, Katy are you okay? We have been so worried.” I looked around myself; I was in some sort of hospital. My friends and my brother stood in front of me. Marco ran towards me and flung his around my neck. Tears of joy ran down my cheeks. We were all fine. Then suddenly everything came back to me like a lightening. I muttered, “Is everything okay? Were we able to save them?”
“Yes, yes. You saved the day!!!” said Trichina, Joey and Mary together, smiling broadly. I was so happy, Mary was alright. “We have a long story to tell you,” said my brother and all of them sat in a semi-circle beside my bed where I was lying.
“You had gone to take the weapon, when we all heard the footsteps of the guards. We waited but you did not give a whistle. Only 15 minutes were left. We all got really worried so we came out, and saw you lying unconscious, blood pooling out of your head. We saw that your arms were clutching something and thought that was probably the weapon. Before coming to you....”
“We all fought with those creatures and were able to defeat them. When we came over to you only three minutes were left. We had to disable the machine. But we couldn’t see it, and didn’t know how to disable it. Something must have gone into you, because you started to do something with your hands and then something green flashed ‘DISABLED’ it read. You had done it. We contacted the Dooblecock tribe and told them what had happened. Now that the weapon was destroyed nothing could detect them...”
“They put you in the emergency ward and tried to heal you. You weren’t perfectly fine, but at least you were better than before. They have given you an amulet which you must protect with your heart. It is the only thing that can allow the next generation to live. It is only given to the most trustworthy tribe member, but as a token of thanks they have provided this to you. Never ever tell anyone of this place,” finished Mary.
So much had happened, so many things to take in. I needed rest. “Probably, I shall sleep for a while.” I said this and dosed off.’
“Wake up, wake up. We shall miss our flight ‘cause of you,” said my mother in a stern voice. I slowly opened my eyes and looked around. I was at the Mango tree hotel in Miami. I slowly got up and brushed my teeth, and then I started to untangle my hair. I felt the dry blood and bumps on my forehead. I wondered was it a dream or was it true?
