It was the Seniors’ last day on the cruise ship to Paris. They were on their once in a life time graduation trip, and Parker couldn’t wait to spend his time with Avery in the city of love. They were inseparable. Parker had dashing auburn hair, a perfect jawline, and eyes that were the color of the ocean. Equally as stunning, Avery had platinum blonde hair, a beautiful smile, and a pair of emerald green eyes.
There’s a tradition at Kingston High that on the last night of every graduation trip, there would be a party held in the royal ball room of the cruise ship. It was a time for girls to show off their prom dresses and for guys to be in their tuxedo. Indeed, it was the night everyone was looking forward to. Avery was hanging out at her best friend Kaley’s room, talking about how incredible the night would be.
The sun has set, and the sky was filled with shining stars. The doors of the ball room finally opened, and everyone strolled into the decorated room. In a split second, the room was crowded with people. Excitement and laughter filled the air. Parker and Avery walked side by side into the ball room, holding hands. The night has just begun, but it will very soon come to an end.
Thunder struck, and the tables started to shake. Most of the people were loosing their balance. Parker held onto Avery’s hands, managed to get out of the ball room, and onto the stern of the ship. “Quick! There’s a life boat right over here!” Yelled Parker.
“What about Kaley?”
“There’s no time!”
They pushed the boat into the water, hopped on, and paddled away from the ship. They watched as the ship sunk, with tears pouring down Avery’s cheeks. Kaley was her only friend, and now she’s gone forever. “I’m so sorry, I can’t even imagine how you feel right now,” Parker said with his voice full of sadness.
“It’s not your fault, we’re on the same boat,” replied Avery, trying to smile, but inside, her heart has already shattered into a million pieces.
They sat on the life boat for hours, with Avery leaned onto Parker’s shoulder. Then, they finally decided to paddle around to see if they could find land. There was no sign at all. They kept paddling until they were both exhausted. Beaten, they drifted into a deep, sound sleep.
The sun rose from the horizon, and the morning sunshine woke Parker and Avery up. Looking at their watches, it was only 4:00 a.m. Avery yawned, and memories started to rush back. The ship sinking, loosing Kaley, jumping onto the life boat… it was too much to take in. All she wanted to do was break down, but she knew she had to stay strong.
They were thirsty, hungry, and full of mixed emotions. It just all came so fast. They started to paddle once again, with hope fading away.
With an empty stomach and an aching heart, they managed to paddle until noon. While they were taking a little break, they noticed grey clouds covering the sun. This was a really good sign, there’s definitely a big chance it’s going to rain. They could finally drink some fresh water and also collect some for the next day.
It soon started to pour, and they filled some empty juice bottles they found floating on top of the ocean with water, and drank some as well. They also found some energy bars in an emergency kit in a small cabinet hidden under one of the seats. That was the first time Avery smiled since the royal party.
Night quickly fell, and before they knew it, it was dark already. They were so worn out after all the work they had done today, and their arms felt really sore. Lying down, they quickly fell asleep.
Awoken by the thunder, they started to shake from the chill of the wind. The boat started to rock, and waves came crashing onto the sides of the boat. They were horrified. Instantly, they grabbed their paddles and tried to move the boat. Giving up, they sat on the boat, closed their eyes, and hoped for the best.
“Theres no way we’re going to survive this,” Avery said full of sorrow.
“At least we still have each other.”
At that point, the storm starts howling and they both remained silent. They still had their eyes closed, and it turned into complete silence. Soon, they both shut their minds off and went off into their own worlds.
Parker woke up to a gentle nudge on the shoulder, he opened his eyes—Was he dreaming? Avery stood on the warm sand with a delightful smile on her face.
“Land. Mother nature did us a good! The thunder brought us here!” Avery said with excitement. Parker was speechless. He just stood there with an unexplainable happiness that ran down his body. “Wow,” Parker finally said. Hope rushed back, and they were thinking positive once again. Parker joined Avery on the beach, and sunk his feet in the sand. It was so comforting.
They sat on the sand and waited for someone to show up and rescue them. They were still really tired and hungry, so they just rested on the beach.
The day has finally come. They sighted a helicopter and they waved and shouted at it. “Help!! We’re trapped here! Over here!” Yelling at the top of their lungs, they managed to get the helicopter’s attention, and it landed onto the island. They hopped onto the helicopter with a massive smile on their faces. They felt blessed.
Parker and Avery was sent back to England, and they lived on their lives. They went off to college, and wanted to get married soon. It was all wonderful, but Avery still had a streak of pain in the bottom of her heart. She was going to get married, without Kaley being her maid of honor.
She will never forget the most important memory of her life. Being lost at sea.
