Case of the Missing Pig
Born 2004, M, from Nashville, TN, United StatesIt was a beautiful, sunny summer Saturday afternoon in Somerville, Alabama. People could be seen walking down the streets, going in and out of businesses, and playing and picnicking in the park with their families located in the town square.
Somerville was a small town with a population of about 3,000 people. Most of the residents were farmers. They often came to town on Saturday with their families to sell the items they grew on their farms, run errands, do shopping, and spend time with friends and family.
Somerville was like a lot of the towns you see in the old movies. It had just one of everything. There was one drug store with an ice cream and soda shop, one post office, one bank, one grocery store, one hardware and feed store, one movie theater, one bakery, one elementary, middle, and high school, one gas station and repair shop, and one department store that sold everything from clothes to washing machines, and one jail. The only thing that Somerville had more than one of was churches. There were four of them.
Somerville had one police chief, one detective, and one deputy. They were all brothers who had all grown up in Somerville. The oldest brother was TL Johnson. He was a retired state trooper who now served as police chief for the Somerville Police Department. The middle brother, JV Johnson had also been a state trooper but now served as the only detective for the Somerville Police Department. The youngest brother, JT had just graduated from the police academy and returned home to work with his brothers as a deputy.
Chief Johnson was sitting at his desk inside of the Somerville Police Department. He stood to stretch his legs after completing a report. He slowly walked towards the window when something across the street caught his attention. There were two men arguing and looked as if they would come to blows at any minute. Chief Johnson quickly exited the building and ran across the street to see what was going on with the gentlemen. Of course, Chief Johnson knew both the men. Somerville after all was a small town and everyone knew everyone. He greeted each man as he approached them. Good morning John and Ed. What seems to be the problem here? John Marks and Ed Turner turned around to see who had spoken their names. John was the first to speak. “Good morning Chief Johnson. I’m glad you’re here. I need you to arrest Ed for stealing,” John said angrily. Chief Johnson said, “What has he stolen?” “He stole Petunia!” John yelled loudly. Petunia was John’s champion show pig. She had held the title for the last 4 years. “You know and I know that he has been fond of her for a few years now. He just can’t accept coming in second place behind me each year.” This year’s competition is being held next week and he can’t stand the thought of losing to me again this year. He took her Chief Johnson and I can prove it."
Chief Johnson turned to Ed. “Ed, what do you have to say about all of this?” said Chief Johnson. Ed was furious. “I didn’t steal your pig!” I haven’t been anywhere near your farm or that pig.
“That’s a lie and you know it!” yelled John. “Why do you think he’s lying?” asked Chief Johnson. “This hat is one of the reasons” said John. I found it right outside of Petunia’s pen. It belongs to Ed. You can see for yourself, Chief. John passed the white hat to Chief Johnson. Take a look at the name inside the hat. Chief Johnson took the hat and looked inside to see Ed Turner’s name written inside. “Can you explain this Ed?” Chief Johnson asked. "It’s not mine, Chief Johnson, said Ed. I have mine right here in my truck. I keep it between the seats so that I don’t lose it." Ed opened the truck door and looked between the seats. He didn’t see it and quickly started searching the truck. He didn’t find it anywhere. “Chief Johnson, I promise it was here last night” said Ed.
"You both come on over to the office with me and let’s see if we can figure this whole thing out." Directed Chief Johnson.
All three men walked back to the jailhouse together. Once they were inside Chief Johnson told each man to take a seat in the chairs in front of his desk. His brothers JV and JT had been sitting at their desk and now joined the others in front of Chief Johnson’s desk. “Now let’s start at the beginning” said Chief Johnson to both men. "John can you tell me exactly what happened from the time you put Petunia in her pen until you found her missing this morning?" John spoke, “Yes, I can tell you what happened but you are wasting time when the person who did it is sitting right in front of you." Chief Johnson spoke, “I will be the judge of that. Now tell me what happened."
"It’s the week before the show and I have a routine that I always follow. It is important to follow this routine to make sure she is at her best when I show her. I weigh, feed, and walk her outside of her pen twice a day. I also bathe and brush her a few days before the show and then again the day before the show. I went down around 2:00 PM yesterday afternoon to weigh, feed, and walk Petunia. I finished walking her around 3:30 PM and decided to give her bath. I was in the middle of bathing her outside of her pen when the chickens started to squawk loudly. I dropped the water hose and ran to see why they were making so much noise. I discovered a raccoon trying to get inside the pen. It took about an hour before I got the chickens settled down. I came back and finished washing and brushing Petunia. It was around 8:00 PM before I was done and headed back home. I awoke this morning and headed down to Petunia’s pen with my son Jake to feed her. When we got there the pen door was open and Petunia was gone. I found that hat you're holding in your hand right outside of Petunia’s pen. My son also remembered seeing Ed alone in his truck pulling a trailer about a half mile from our house when he came home around 10:00 PM. It was him!!!" yelled John. "You need to arrest him now Chief Johnson. He took Petunia and that hat proves it."
Chief Johnson turned to Ed and asked, “Were you at the Marks farm last night?”
"No, I wasn’t at his farm and I didn’t take his pig” said Ed.
“Do you have anyone that can back-up what you are saying?”, asked Chief Johnson? “No, I was alone all day”, said Ed angrily.
“I told you that he stole Petunia”, said John loudly. "I demand that you arrest him now." Chief Johnson turned to Ed to ask another question when he was interrupted by his brother JV. "Ed didn’t take Petunia and I can prove it," said JV.
How does JV know for sure that Ed didn’t take Petunia?
John found the hat right outside of Petunia’s pen. If the hat had indeed been dropped outside of the pen then it would have been covered in mud. John had left the water running in front of the pen for an hour while he handled the chickens. After further questioning, John confessed that he had hidden Petunia because she had developed lice and wouldn’t show well at the championship pig show this year. He didn’t want to lose or to see Ed win so he came up with a fake kidnapping of Petunia.
