Yesterday i woke with my arm hurting. I could feel exactly where she had hit me with the belt. I was hit because i had not finished my chores. The orphanage nurse said the pain would go away by now but it still hasn't. Not the pain on my arm, but the pain in my heart.
My name is Emily. I have no last name. Its been just Emily since the day my mom and dad dropped me off in the front of this orphanage. I was only five when they dropped me off, knocked on the door, then told me through the rolled down window that they would be back. And still, to this day i'm waiting for that moment to arrive. Every week we get visitors, they usually come to look at the children and see which one they would like to adopt. Then they would bring them into the back office and tell them the great news. I only know the rumors about it though because it's never actually happened to me. i guess no one wants an eleven year old? I always lose almost two friends a week. but i constantly earn more because more and more children always come in. I never really worry about it though, i already know i'm never gonna get out of here...
"Hey, um Emily, can you see me for a second?" one of the heads of the orphanage said one day as i laid in my room and read a book.
"sure, why not?"
She took me to the back room probably just to talk in her office because I've already accepted that i wouldn't get adopted and i knew that this could not possibly mean that i was.
There were two people standing in her office. "this is Mr and Mrs Macy, they have decided to adopt you!"....
I wasn't sure if this was real or not but if it was... that meant i would finally have a last name.
