Elaine was a romantic young woman who yearned for a loving relationship. She wanted, not necessarily, a permanent loving relationship leading to marriage, but a beautiful romantic relationship with a member of the opposite sex. Elaine dated different men, but none of the dates led to romances.
As actual romances continued to elude her, Elaine found herself taking refuge in books of romantic poetry and prose. In the make-believe world of poetry and novels, the protagonists enjoyed heart felt romantic relationships, sometimes leading to marriage, but more than often the relationships ended before heroes and heroines were able to marry. Elaine enjoyed romances vicariously through here books.
Elaine read two romantic pieces in particular which interested her. They were stories written in poetic form. One day when Elaine was visiting her best friend Barbara who was also searching for romance as Elaine was and who also enjoyed her romances vicariously through books, Elaine told Barbara about the two romantic pieces she was reading.
“In the first one”, Elaine said to Barbara, “the hero and the heroine did marry. This one is called “A Young Man’s Search for Love and Romance in India”, and is goes like this”, Elaine said to Barbara. She preceded to tell her the story.
Tom was on a journey far and wide to begin a search to find a bride. Going to India was a possibility. It is a country where people go to find spirituality. India is Asia’s largest democracy but its customs make it a theocracy. Indian girls are university educated nut whether they have autonomy is to be debated. They might want to choose their husbands freely but many marriages are still arranged by family. India has a large film industry called Bollywood. It is the same as the American Hollywood. Bollywood performers marry whom they choose. Tom wanted to find a pretty and talented girl who will he will amuse. Arriving in India he finds a variety of sights and sounds. He intend to take his time and make the rounds. Mumbai is a city of appalling contrasts. Its population includes the wealthy and the poverty stricken outcasts. In Bollywood he found a theatre performance
of dancing and singing girls. They have voices like nightingales and heave their bodies in a variety of swirls. One beautiful girl is a treat for the eye as he watched her perform he gives a breath and a sigh. After the show the girls with the audience mingle. Unlike girls whose marriages are arranged they are free to choose husbands or be single. Tom went to seek out a beautiful girl and start a conversation with her. It turns out that her family is very modern and approve of her being a performer. After his initial conversation, Tom found her both talented and intelligent. She carries her body in a way that is poised and elegant. Tom and Nalina like each other and want their acquaintanceship to tarry. Is this the girl whom Tom will want to marry? They have common interests in the arts and writing. Nalini’s laughter and enthusiasm are most inviting. Tom and Nalini’s relationship progresses and I leave you to imagine the rest. Her parents are lovely people and treat Tom in their house as more than a guest. In India, in Mumbai, in Bollywood,
Tom has found a wife. They are both talented individuals and in India can settle for life.
In the second one”, Elaine said to Barbara, “the romance ended after one night”. This one is called “Romance on the high Seas”, Elaine said to Barbara. She proceeded to tell her the story.
Anita is a wealthy and aristocratic family from. Frank is what her family would consider a bum. She is dressed very prim and proper. He looks like he was just arrested by a copper. Meeting each other on a ship sailing the sea they both feel considerably more at ease than if they had met at a conventional setting because her family would have required him to have a detailed vetting. Anita and Frank fall in love instantly which might not happen if they had seen each other constantly. They are by chance travelling on a luxury liner with an atmosphere and ambiance that could not be finer. Uniformed valets offering first class service which has made him, from a poor family, quite nervous. He won a contest which has as its grand prize a cruise. She is a beginning creative writer looking for a muse.
The ship’s dining room is pretty and exquisite. To be a waiter here formal training is a pre-requisite. Lavish platters of gourmet delicacies walk around the room. Guests with linen napkins on their laps and the correct cutlery sit ready to consume. Consuming wine with dinner loosens tongues with the latest social news for which wealthy and aristocratic have amazing views. Some intimate couples have longstanding relationships set while others like our own lady and her new significant other have only just met. Splendid furnished staterooms offer discrete opportunities for romance or, if guests wish, they may stay in the dining room and dance. Our lady friend and her significant other are ready to retire for the night. Thoughts of occupying the same stateroom do give them a fright. Romance on the high seas can be taken advantage of. A full-blown love when they go home requires approval from above. Tossing caution to the sea breezes they decide to spend the night together. A remarkable choice, given that despite social status disparities
they are birds of a feather. Underneath suitable clothing, her beauty is statuesque. An aristocratic portrayal of her nudity would be picturesque. Her eyes are the colour of sea and her face is as pale as moonlight. He decides that never before has he seen such a magnificent sight. Covered in black hair from head to toe, he looks a delight. Though from different parts of town, for each other they are so right.
Experienced in intimacy, he knows to use protection. They devour each other’s bodies with glee and affection. Their intimacy is as exciting as it can possibly be. Oblivious to going’s on, the ship plies the sharks and waves. There are no chaperons to ensure everybody behaves. But every night ends and he and she have to face the cold, bleak dawn as they finish the cruise, she finds that her love is gone. To her, he is a muse for creative writing, no more. She can now write about her cruise with details galore.
Elaine and Barbara look at each other after hearing the stories and sigh. Will they each ever find someone who will catch their eye?
