Invisible Spirit
(Short Story)
By: R. Amritha Kanna
Steadfast woke up in his comfy warm den to find outside covered in snow! Winter had begun and it was snowing hard.
“Grrrrr”…..his tummy grumbled. He was starving. The pack that Steadfast belonged to was going to hunt soon. He got up and stretched. Then set across the den to go find his pack. The crisp, fresh white snow crunched under Steadfast’s feet.
He finally found his pack ready to strike and kill a deer. What a deer was doing out here, he didn’t know, but Steadfast did know that sometimes very foolish animals did come out at winter. Didn’t they know that wolves don’t hibernate?
Well, the animals who did know are in no condition to tell other animals and partly because, well let’s face it; Steadfast’s pack ate the animals who came out at winter because they were hungry.
So, Steadfast got distracted trying to kill a deer but he didn’t realise that he ran away from his pack and when he did, he was far deep in the forest. Steadfast killed the deer and ate it, but he was scared. Steadfast had never been outside his part of the land without his pack!
He decided to go exploring, so Steadfast went deeper into the forest. He went for hours until he decided to stop and head back. Then, he didn’t know where he came from! He was lost.
Suddenly he met Thunder, one of his best friends. She was surprised, but he was relieved. Steadfast wasn’t the only one lost in the woods.
“I got lost when I was chasing a deer,” he explained.
“My sister tricked me into entering the forest.” trembled Thunder.
Steadfast comforted her since that was what best friends do for each other. They decided to go look for their tribe a.k.a pack together. They didn’t realise that there wasn’t only two of them there lost in the forest. Three in fact! Steadfast and Thunder went along not noticing that they were being followed by somebody!!!
A spirit was trailing them; all wolves had the power to do stuff that is unique. Steadfast’s power was being able to see invisible spirits and suspicious things. So after a few hours of walking, Steadfast sensed something and yelled, “Stop!”
Thunder froze.
“I smell something suspicious lurking around,” he said.
Thunder commented “Yeah, and I smell something idiotic is going to happen.” Thunder didn’t know that Steadfast had the ability or power to see invisible things and suspicious spirits. She thought he had only the power to be very fast, which is how he got his name.
Steadfast believed he saw it so he howled “I know you’re hiding in there. Come out and show yourself!”
As soon as he howled that a matte figure stepped out of the shadows and Thunder screamed.
“Fine, there was a shadow in there, but what is it going to do to us?” she whimpered.
“I think it’s a nice spirit that would help us get home to our pack,” recalled Steadfast.
“I don’t think so,” argued Thunder.
See, these were the kind of arguments that Steadfast and Thunder always got into that could last for two days; they always got over it and they were best friends again. That’s what best friends do, right? They make up. So, back to the story.
Steadfast was insisting that they follow the spirit and Thunder was telling him not to. Finally, she gave up and went off in another direction that actually lead deep into the forest. Thunder did not know this.
“WAIT!” cried Steadfast.
He ran off to see her go and thought he had seen something behind him light up. Steadfast didn’t look back and kept his eyes on Thunder who was now slowing down. Thunder was also smart and quicker at howling and howled.
“Stop! Don’t follow me!”
Steadfast quickly obeyed. He turned around and headed back to the spirit and asked “Can you lead me home to the pack?”
The spirit formed a thumbs up and started to move forward away into a trail lit up suddenly by the stars. Steadfast steadily followed along looking back constantly, because he felt sad for Thunder.
The spirit, however, was acting strange. Steadfast had caught a glimpse of it changing when he ran after Thunder. It was restless. Was this wolf really that quick and fast and how and why can it sense me so easily? Then, it came to sudden realisation. What if… that was Steadfast’s power? Why had the spirit never noticed it before?
As the spirit was thinking this, Steadfast was worrying. He worried about his pack. He worried about the spirit. He worried about finding his home and most of all, he worried about Thunder.
You see Thunder was Steadfast’s best friend ever since they were pups. She would always help him with hunting, making a snow den, and stalking like a wolf. She was like his sister. His mom and dad helped him too, but he was an only child so having a friend that close was everything to him.
Of course, he had other best friends too, like Juniper, a really cool wolf. Juniper had the power to turn into spirits and help others. He also had the ability to find places and destinations quickly making him the perfect guide.
Suddenly, just thinking that about Juniper made Steadfast stop abruptly. Was it possible that the spirit that was guiding him was actually his best friend Juniper? No. it just couldn’t be. “Why would Juniper be risking his life to save me and Thunder?”
Steadfast thought. Then he felt a pang of guilt about leaving Thunder in the deep forest. The spirit stopped, too. It started to head back and it formed some words “I sensed your thoughts and I am going to find Thunder. I know where she is.” Steadfast was stricken. How did the spirit know what he was thinking? “Must be a coincidence,” he muttered. So, Steadfast found shelter beside some trees and quietly dozed off. …………..
Meanwhile….
“Help!, somebody please help.” yelped Thunder. “STEADFAST!” she howled pleadingly. The young wolf was trapped. She was trapped by a boulder and it caught on her leg crushing it completely. She was hopeless.
‘By now, the spirit and Steadfast would probably be close to finding the pack’, she thought. ‘Why did I not listen to Steadfast?’ Suddenly as soon as it came, a spirit rushed by. It made itself visible and not invisible like it was before.
“Spirit!” cried Thunder. “Help! Can you find Steadfast?”
The spirit looked her way and made a thumbs up and ran away. “WAIT!” cried Thunder. Her hope was lost. The spirit had run away and she was alone.
Grrrrr…. “What is it?” Steadfast growled. He had just been woken up from a good dream. He dreamed that he had found Thunder and they were friends and they found the pack. He was soon going to realize that the dream was about to come true. The spirit was whistling in his ear and he hated it. “Fine, I’ll get up,” Steadfast growled. He followed with a snarl. The spirit formed words that said:
HELP! Thunder is trapped in a boulder and she needs your help!
Steadfast snapped out of his half-snarl and began to run. The spirit led the way. Steadfast was really fast for an average wolf. He got there in five minutes and it was really far away.
“Steadfast!” Thunder whispered. She was weak. With the help from the spirit, they pushed away the boulder. It was heavy but it was worth the job. Thunder was free!
“Oh Steadfast! I’m so sorry!” whimpered Thunder. “I should have just trusted you. I was just scared of the spirit trapping me and you.” admitted Thunder, “but instead, I got trapped!” said Thunder. “I’m so sorry!” she wailed.
Then she healed herself with her powers. That was Thunder’s power. To heal yourself was a special ability. Not many wolves have it. So, Thunder said an apology to the spirit and they set off to find their pack. They were traveling for hours and soon, it was dark.
“LOOK!” exclaimed Steadfast. “I found a cave for us to sleep in.” So they found shelter in the cave.
“Ahhh….. That was refreshing.” mumbled Steadfast. Thunder agreed. “Where is the spirit?” she asked. Steadfast looked around. “It's here.’’ he added. So, they set off again. The spirit stopped after a couple of hours and they saw a deer.
“I think it wants us to eat the deer.” Steadfast said. So, Thunder and Steadfast positioned themselves quietly behind the deer and to the side.
And 1...2...3…
Attack!!!! Thunder was tearing at the deer and Steadfast was shredding it to bits. Finally they ate their share and left. The spirit and the two wolves spent the whole day traveling for hours, stopping only for water and hunting. Finally, after a week, they thought they saw their pack as an outline. They started to run and finally they reached it! It was their pack!!!
Steadfast and Thunder were so happy they started to get hyper and their pack was so happy that Steadfast and Thunder were covered with wolves all around them and they forgot to thank the spirit for leading them home.
Steadfast looked around but there was no spirit around.
Meanwhile….
The spirit had rushed back into the woods and looked around to see if anyone had followed. No one had, so it went and turned around in three circles in the air. Suddenly, the spirit dissolved and there were sparkles in the air.
On the floor, there was a young wolf like Steadfast and Thunder and it was whimpering and it got up and shook itself. It’s name was Juniper!
It was as Steadfast suspected. The spirit was their best friend! Making sure no one saw that, Juniper slowly slinked away into the pack. Steadfast and Thunder had gone to sleep. Juniper smiled to himself.
