Sometimes Beauty Is Only Skin Deep
Born 2000, F, from South Australia, AustraliaShe was walking through the crowd amongst the rest of the students in her sub–school. She had just gotten to school, and all she was thinking was how much she wanted to go back home and go to bed. She had woken up that morning and done her daily routine; put hair back in ponytail, got dressed into her school pants and polo shirt, never, ever a dress or skirt, had breakfast, brushed her teeth and walked to school. She never put on make–up, never did her hair in a pretty hair style and ignored the fact that she basically wore the boy’s school uniform. Time to go to hell on Earth. I wonder if there will be any Bold and the Beautiful moments today, She thought dramatically.
As she walked through the hall ways, people bumped into her, brushed against her as if she wasn’t even there. As she approached her friends at the lockers, she noticed something different yet the same. They all had changed their hair styles, again. Kim Kardashian must have posted some stupid picture again with her hair in a stupid bun on top of her head, she thought. All her friends were obsessed with looking the best and having the latest fashion, unlike her. They were all talking to a group of boys, known as “the woggs”. These guys were at the top of the food chain, like a shark. And she was a shrimp compared. School was based on the food chain... She had no idea why the wogs were so popular. All they did was attempt to look and play like David Beckham, yet never succeeded and were all failing their courses. She didn’t understand why her friends even paid attention to them, but she knew why the guys were interested in her friends. They looked like Victoria Secret models, but in school uniform and without the heels and lingerie and wings.
“Excuse me….” she said while attempting to get past one of the guys who were standing in her way. I think his name is Peter…..
He didn’t notice her until she forcefully tapped him on the shoulder. “Oh, sorry I didn’t notice you were there… ha LOL”, and he turned back to talk to one of his mates.
LOL? Why not just laugh? And why was he even laughing? What about him? I mean his hair looks like it is a paint brush!
She pushed passed him and reached down to her locker. She put her bag in the locker and grabbed her books and laptops for her next lesson. Her friends ignored her, probably because they were talking to the “hottest” guys in the school. Whatever…. She thought and stalked away almost at the speed of lightning.
Throughout the day, it was like a normal day. She went to her classes and sat at the back of every single one, doing her work and listening to music. No one ever paid attention to her, except the girls who enjoy teasing her about how she looks, commenting on her hair, glasses and uniform. She just ignored them, thinking of how in the future that she would be smart and have a fancy house and lifestyle, whilst they pay for how they never payed any attention to anything other than how they look.
Why do they care so much anyway? There’s no point if you’re dumb, because if you have no job, no money, that means no “precious” clothes and jewellery. And what about the guys? All they care about is sports, girls in short skirts and food. Nothing about principal, education or for even caring about how the girl feels or represents herself. It isn’t fair. I need to prove this to everyone. Why do guys care so much?
She went home that night and Googled how to put on makeup, the proper way, and how to curl her hair. She spent almost three hours practicing how to apply the makeup and how to use the straightener. She then went into her older sister’s room and took her school summer dress. This is when home – economics actually became useful in life. She measured the dress on to her body and hitched up the dress up above her knees and began to sew …..
The next day at school, things were different. In the morning, she curled her hair and spent forty five minuted on her make-up. She then put on the dress and swapped her black Nikes for a pair of black leather converse. And before she left, she spritzed herself with perfume. And everything changed. As she walked through the hall ways, she noticed people looking. Boys are looking at me! She thought it was impossible and unbelievable. As she approached her friends at the locker, the wogs were still hanging around. She walked right through the group to her locker, and all the guys stared.
“What?” she asked innocently.
“Wow, you look ….. Different”, one of the girls that were surrounding her locker said.
“Good different though, of course”, one of the boys said, staring at her as if she had walked in naked – with a surprised and disbelieving look on his face.
Hmm, I was right. Maybe if I try ………
“So I’m going to the movies this Friday girls, did you want to join me?” she said as she opened her locker and placed her bag inside.
“Um … sure but –”, one of the girls began to say, but the boy who laughed at her yesterday interrupted her.
“Can I come? I’m not busy, maybe we could sit next to each other”, he said as he grinned.
She thought about this. These guys have never paid attention to me. Now they want to come to the movies with me? Wow, sad. I’m gonna show them what it’s like to be ignored – what it’s like for the rest of us.
“Hmm, no. I want to go with my friends. You’re not my friend. You’ve never even talked to me in the past three years, until I hitch up my dress and put on some makeup and do my hair. You're pathetic, all of you. What makes you think that I would want to hang out with you. You're rude, disgusting and you completely ignored me, even when I was standing right there. And this goes for all of you boys. I may be at the bottom of the food chain, but I’m one fish that will put up a fight and stand up for myself. And I’m never wearing this pathetic get up again. You’re all sad and why would I want to hang out with you? Ha – LOL”, she said with a grin.
