Molly the Cactus
Born 1982, F, from Mumbai, IndiaMOLLY THE CACTUS
Grandma Gooseberry had a lovely garden in her front yard. The garden had all kinds of different flowers; Rose, Jasmine, Dahlia, Sunflower, Hibiscus, Marigold and Orchid. Grandma Gooseberry had grown them with love and care. She was fond of all of them, but her favorite was Molly the cactus.
Now, all the flowers would have lots of fun together. They would talk, sing and play all day. But in all of this, they never included poor Molly! Molly would always try to be friends with them, but the mean flowers would only make fun of her. “Molly, how prickly you are!” Rose flower would say. “People stop to smell and touch me, but neither do you smell good nor look good!” the rose flower would say and all the other flowers would start to laugh. “People love to adorn me on their hair, but no would like to see you sit on their hair!” Jasmine flower would tease. Poor Molly would feel very sad and lonely.
One day, Grandma Gooseberry went to visit her daughter in the neighboring town. The flowers thought she would be back in two days, like she usually did. But on the fourth day when there was no sign of Grandma Gooseberry the flowers began to worry. “Oh dear! I am really thirsty!” cried out the Marigold flower.”Me too!” said Dahlia flower. “Our soil is parched. It is so bright and sunny. We need to be watered quickly; else we will all dry up” said the Hibiscus flower in dismay. Rose flower was weeping quietly. “What is the matter Rose? We are all waiting for water. Don’t worry; I’m sure Grandma Gooseberry will come soon” said Orchid flower. “Oh, it’s not me I’m worried about” sobbed the Rose flower loudly. “It’s my new bud! She just started to come out yesterday. If there is no water today, she may dry out even before blooming!” wailed the Rose flower. All the other flowers gasped! “Oh no! We need water quickly! Poor Rose bud!” cried out the flowers. They all started to think aloud together on what could be done to save poor little bud, but no one could think of a solution.
Molly was listening to all of this. In the middle of all the noise, Molly said aloud “I can lend water to little Rose bud. I am a cactus plant. I have water stored in me. I can survive with very little water. It is more important for Rose bud to get water”. Molly very bravely let go of the stored water from her body and lent it to the Rose bud. “Little Rose bud will survive!” said Marigold flower and all the flowers cheered in joy for Molly. The Rose flower turned to Molly and said “Molly, we are all very sorry for making fun of you. You are a very nice cactus. Even though we were mean, you helped us. I cannot thank you enough. You have taught us an important lesson. It is not how one looks, but how one behaves that makes one a good or bad person. All the flowers agreed in unison. From that day on Molly became the favorite of not only Grandma Gooseberry but of all the flowers in the garden.
