Before Jason was wrestled by gorgeous vampire, he did not know who he was.
He woke up yesterday morning and nearly had a heart attack when he saw the snakes around his bed. He froze and wished his heart could also do that. He was already ready to sleep and never wake up again, when someone talked.
“So you’re awake now” said a girl’s voice. He tried not to look to the direction of the voice, because his eyes were fixed on the snakes.
“Don’t worry, they don’t bite”, she continued and made a hissing sound which Jason thought was the snakes.
The snakes woke and looked up where the girl was and then to Jason with disgusted eyes, then left Jason’s bed to the door. Jason watched the snakes go. He was about to move when he realized one snake was left sleeping.
“Oh come on Sam, the visitor’s already having a heart attack”, the girl said, and this time she was already by Jason’s bed and tapped the snake which eventually opened its mouth baring its big fangs before going out slowly. Jason realized that the snake just yawned in front of him.
“Sorry about that. They just want to sleep comfortably”. For the first time, he looked at the girl. She’s about the same age as he was, but what age was he? Fifteen? Sixteen? He could not remember. Weird.
“What?” the girl asked reading Jason’s expression.
“Where am I?” he asked. There were so many questions on his head but his mouth blurted the loudest of them. He scanned the room but nothing looked familiar. It was full of weird paintings of snakes. One has a smiling snake curled below an apple tree while on his right was a painting of a man with a green snake around his head. He swallowed and decided not to get a better look at the other paintings. On the table beside his bed was a figurine of a cobra showing its two big glass fangs.
“Well, you are in my house. You are lost in the woods and we found you wounded”, she said. He studied himself and found that he almost looked like a mummy.
“Woods?” he asked. 'Where the hell am I? How come I’m in the woods?' He thought. As far as he knew Makati doesn’t have a forest.
“I understand you can’t remember anything. You bumped your head pretty hard. You were like already half dead when we found you,” she said calmly, but she could not meet his eyes. “We should get going. Breakfast’s ready”, she continued. She held her hand and smiled. Jason took her hand and she helped him get out of the room. He shot a last glance to the room and he thought the figurine cobra winked at him.
The house (or was it better called a mansion?) seemed to be full of secrets which Jason thought would be better to be kept like that. Their trip to the dining hall seemed like forever. He carefully descended the grand stairs knowing that one wrong step would lead him to his death even before he could reach the bottom.
The grand hall was enough to park two 12 wheeler trucks with an extra room for three more cars. Once in a while, he would get glimpses of snakes slithering on some opened rooms or in the halls like they were some busy men or busy snakes?
Finally, after several twists and curves, they arrived at the dining hall. The long table did not seem to be just a table at all. It could at least contain thirty persons. Jason thought they were about to throw a party because of the foods that filled the entire table. Unfortunately, there was only one man sitting on the head side and Jason wondered if he was too early for the party.
“Sssso here issss our very sssspecial guesssst”, the man said and the girl led Jason to sit beside him. The man got a piece of whatever food he had and Jason noticed how odd the foods were because he could not identify anything.
“Eat anything you want my friend”, the man smiled. As far as Jason could see, the man was in his late thirties. He had a mustache thick enough to be like Santa Claus’ except that it was black. The girl sat on the other side of the man and ate the nearest food to eat which looked like violet spaghetti.
Jason tried to take some of what she was eating but he was starting to lose his appetite.
“Am…Sir, can I ask a question?” he said taking an excuse not to eat.
“Only one? I wasss under the impressssion that you have loadssss", the man said then smiled at him. He tapped his mouth with his napkin and a servant appeared and got his plate. “What do you want to asssk firsssst?”, he continued.
“Who are you? I mean, thanks for letting me in, but it is a mystery how I got here in the woods in the first place. And I can’t remember anything at all. Who am I? All I know is that I am Jason but Jason who?," Jason asked.
“That wassss more than one, dear”, the man said and the girl beside him giggled. “I’m Monsssieur Martin and thisss isss my daughter Maria,” he said. “On how you got in the woodssss my only idea isss you were being chassssed by…vampiresss”. He looked at Jason intently like he was watching his reaction. The way he said the last word made it worse than its meaning. Maria had stopped eating and Jason felt a sudden drop in the temperature.
“What? Vampires? Where am I? In a comic book?", Jason asked mockingly.
“I know you would not believe what I just sssaid but I sssay thisss to you young man that there are thingsss in thisss world that are hidden for the sssafety of the humansss like you,” Martin said.
“I don’t believe---but who am I? why can’t I remember anything?” Jason asked. He was going insane. He wanted to wake up from this dream and face the reality that he still had his memory.
“I can’t tell you who you are. But on how you lossst your memory, I think you bumped your head or they got you----“. Jason didn’t hear what Martin said next because a loud explosion followed by shoutings broke the silence outside. He accidently knocked his plate and the food dropped on his lap.
“Sssso they are here”, Martin said. By the tone of his voice he was already expecting this. He smiled and Jason noticed that there was something popping in and out of his mouth. He did not see this a while ago because of Martin’s mustache but now he could see that it was a tongue like that of snakes.
Just then, something was thrown through the window and everything went black. Jason coughed and he felt someone grab him. The next thing he knew, he was flying---flying down.
He looked at his kidnapper and wondered how on earth this boy learned to fly. The boy was just holding him by his waist and with a wrong move Jason would crash down first. Fortunately, the boy did not forget to bring a parachute and they both landed safely in the woods. The boy got rid of the parachute and piggybacked Jason. He wanted to look back but he could not. There were so many explosions, like the house was on its way to demolition.
A girl appeared and was running beside them. She looked like the same age as Maria but with a pretty face.
“Still Plan A?” the boy asked as they continued to run. Jason was still in shock and could not find his voice to shout.
“Yes” the girl said. She had a voice like chimes. She looked at Jason which he realized was a look of relief. But why?
They were already in the middle of the woods when the ground shook. The boy stumbled and nearly threw Jason from his back. They stopped and the boy put Jason down.
“Who are you? Why----“, Jason tried to ask but the girl cupped her hand on to his mouth and mouthed the words “Don’t move”.
The earth was still shaking and after a moment a very large cobra emerged on their front and Jason got thrown on a root of the nearest tree. He was just a tooth pick compared to the mouth of the snake. It stroked to where he was thrown but the girl stabbed it on its side with a golden sword making the snake turn to her direction with more angry eyes. The snake hissed and attacked the girl but she jumped to avoid it. Jason heard more were coming. He knew this would be his Doom’s Day.
“KEN, PLAN C” the girl shouted at the boy while she tried to keep the snakes attention. “GO”.
“NO”, Ken answered as he threw a rock on to the snake to help her, which Jason thought was a bad idea because it would just worsen the situation. The girl got the sword on her back and slashed the snake’s side. It shivered then fell on the ground. She went to Jason and Ken. She had already many bruises and slashes and Jason was impressed. Killing a giant snake was a very hard job.
“Go now. Take him and fulfill the prophecy. It is not for us,” she glanced at Jason, “Save them. Go,” the girl said. She looked at Jason and gave him a very warm smile. Ken took him again on his back and started to run.
“What are you doing? You are not supposed to leave her alone,” Jason shouted. He didn’t know why but he felt sorry for the girl. He just realized that their Plan C was a suicide plan. Then something dropped on his hand and he saw Ken crying.
“I can’t even if I want to. It is her choice; I have to save you first. That’s what she wanted in the first place,” Ken said.
“Is she crazy? What is this all about? Am I still dreaming? Who are you by the way?” Jason asked. He really wished he could wake up now.
They stopped.
“You don’t know Jason? What did they do to you?” Ken asked.
“You know me?” Jason said.
“Of course. Your sister and Kryz cried when we lost you,” Ken answered.
“I have a sister? And who is Kryz? I’m sorry but I really could not remember anything when I woke up this morning,” Jason said. There was another explosion in the distant and Ken carried him again. Jason could feel that he was tired of running.
“Seems like the snakes got to the first stage with you,” Ken said. It was hard to hear him because of the fact that it was windy and he was already panting.
“Hey, could you please put me down? I can still run.” Jason said. He wanted to free his cased arm but he thought it would be better to leave it like that. Ken put him down and Jason noticed a clearing ahead. There was a meadow and they ran towards it. Ken stopped and looked at the forest again with very sad eyes. He looked younger than the girl a while ago and he had bronze hair and white skin.
“I’m Jason.” Jason held his hand. He felt they needed some first time greeting. Ken shook his hand.
“Since you can’t remember anything, I’m Kendrick. The girl you saw is Kryz. She is your best friend. No ring in your head?,” Ken said and Jason just shook his head. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. "And by the way Jason, you and your sister are in the middle of a war between snakes and vampires," Ken continued, "Yes, that's right. They are the snakes and we're the vampires." Jason laughed as he pondered all he said. Vampires? Snakes? He was definitely having a lucid dream. He could see the river with a bridge ahead leading to another forest. The water gleamed as it flowed on a windy day.
“Am I dreaming?” Jason asked himself. Ken got a rock by his feet and threw it on Jason’s head.
“OUCH,” Jason shouted touching his head.
“Are you still dreaming? You're in the middle of a war. And your best friend was dying there to save us so we better hurry,” Ken said and he walked towards the bridge angrily.
“WAIT. If this is all real, can I ask if you have all good intentions to me…and my sister?” Jason asked. Already inside his head was a war on convincing himself that this was all real. He was thinking about the people he had met and the pain he felt. He was trying to confirm if he was following the right path.
“Your sister is waiting for you,” Ken said.
“Then tell her to wait for me a little longer,” Jason said, “For now, somebody needs my help”.
