Case 39 - The Crooked Boyfriend
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United StatesKathleen Diamonds was looking for love, but she would end up in a dangerous situation. Here’s how it came down.
Kathleen Diamonds and her boyfriend Jeremy Cortez were walking down the sidewalk holding hands. He noticed a person walking down the sidewalk on the other side of the street. He let go of Kathleen’s hand. “Baby, I got to go. I will catch up to you later,” said Jeremy kissing Kathleen on the cheek. He took off running. “That’s weird,” thought Kathleen. She walked on and continued to think about what happened.
Kathleen went to the 169th Precinct and went to the communication office. “Can I help you?” asked Ola. “I need to talk to someone about something,” said Kathleen. “Do you want to talk to Rebella or one of the other inspectors?” asked Ola. “No, ma’am it is probably nothing and I don’t want to waste their time,” said Kathleen. “Pull up a seat,” said Ola, taking her glasses off and sitting them on the desk. Kathleen sat down beside Ola. “What is going on?” asked Ola, suspicious of Kathleen’s action. “I have been seeing this boy and he saw someone and he took off running,” said Kathleen. “What is this boy’s name?” asked Ola putting her glasses back on. “Jeremy Cortez,” said Kathleen. Ola wrote the name down and called the detective office.
Inspector Tina Bullet answered the telephone. “Tina, are you familiar with the name Jeremy Cortez?” asked Ola. “It does not ring a bell,” said Tina. “Are you very busy?” asked Ola. “No,” said Tina. “Would you come to dispatch and talk to someone?” asked Ola. “I am on my way,” said Tina hanging up the phone.
Tina came in to the dispatch office and walked up to where Ola and Kathleen were sitting. “Tina, Kathleen needs to talk to you,” said Ola. Kathleen started getting very nervous. “What is the matter Kathleen?” asked Tina. “Me and my boyfriend were walking down the street and I think he saw someone he knew because he took off running,” said Kathleen. “Let me get this straight... he saw someone and just took off running,” said Tina. “Yes ma’am,” said Kathleen. “Ola, run a check on Jeremy Cortez,” said Tina. Ola put the name in the computer. “This is showing he is 10-99 out of Abilene, Texas, and also has warrants out of the 135th; 236th; and 477th Precinct." “Run a complete history and put my name on it,” said Tina. Ola started printing out Jeremy Cortez’s record. She scooted her chair over to the printer and started read it. “He is wanted in Abilene for armed robbery and wanted out of the 135th; 236th; and 477th Precinct for drug possession and theft,” said Ola. “Dang! How old is this kid?” asked Tina. “19,” said Kathleen. When the information finished printing Ola put Tina’s name on it and handed it to Tina.
Tina went back to the detective office with the information on Jeremy Cortez. She knew she had to tell Rebella what was going on. “Rebella, could we step outside a minute?” said Tina. “Sure,” said Rebella getting up from her desk. They went outside to talk. “Kathleen is seeing a boy that has warrants out for his arrest,” said Tina, handing Rebella the print out on Jeremy Cortez. Rebella read the information. “That little rat!” shouted Rebella angrily. “I am fixing to go see if I can find him,” said Tina. “I am coming with you,” said Rebella.
Rebella and Tina were in the parking garage fixing to get into Tina’s car. Officer Buckman came running through the parking area, got in his car, turned the lights and sirens on and sped away. Officer Early came running through. “We got a call of a purse snatching,” said Officer Early as he ran by Tina and Rebella. “We will back you up,” said Tina.
Tina and Rebella got in Tina’s car. “Notify dispatch that we are backing up Buckman and Early,” said Tina, handing Rebella her police walkie talkie. “Dispatch, this is 5-George 32 and 5 George 35. We are enroute to assist 1 Adam 12 and 1 Adam 19,” said Rebella. Ola acknowledged that she had received Rebella’s traffic.
Officer Buckman was taking the victim’s statement when Tina and Rebella arrived on scene. The description of the suspect matched Jeremy Cortez. Tina showed the victim a picture of Jeremy. The victim identified Jeremy Cortez as the suspect.
“I have an idea,” said Rebella getting into Tina’s car. Rebella took out her cell phone and called Kathleen. She told Kathleen her plan and wanted her to set up a date with Jeremy Cortez. Kathleen set up a date with Jeremy and called Rebella back giving her the time and place.
Jeremy Cortez entered the Brooklyn Pizzeria thinking he was going to meet Kathleen. Rebella and Tina were sitting at the table. Rebella held up handcuffs when she saw him. Jeremy headed for the front door. Inspector J.P. Bullet; Susie Young; Harvey Lucas; and Dowzer, the robotic police dog, were standing at the front door in case Jeremy tried to run. Rebella and Tina came up behind him trapping him so he could not escape. “You are under arrest,” said Rebella.
Jeremy Cortez was extradited back to Abilene. He was found guilty of armed robbery and was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole.
