GHOSTLY ADVENTURE
Born 1969, F, from Miami, United StatesTHE GHOSTLY ADVENTURE
It was a warm summer night and Cookie and her friends were toasting marshmallows by the river bank.
It was nice of your uncle to let us stay with him at his beach house for the summer, Sammy the turtle was telling Daisy the penguin, before he popped another marshmallow into his mouth.
Yah, it’s going to be a great vacation, she smiled.
Okay it’s time for ghost stories! Tommy the tiger cub cried as he picked some of the crust of the marshmallow from his upper lip.
Aww, do we have to? why don’t we talk about something more interesting besides ghosts, Sammy whined.
Like what? School? Stop being such a chicken head Sammy, everyone knows that there’s no such thing as ghosts, Tommy smirked.
Are you sure about that? Daisy half smiled.
Yah I am. have you ever seen one? no, right? He answered.
No, but still that doesn’t mean that they don’t exist just cause I never seen one. but I’ve heard of one who haunts this island, Daisy answered.
Oh yah right, who Casper? Tommy laughed.
Funny, but no, her name was Katie Batty.
The flames inside the campfire grew higher as Cookie asked her, Who was she?
Well, according to my uncle, Katie was born here on this island and she never left.
What happened to her? Vicky asked.
Supposedly her husband murdered her.
Oh come on Daisy, do you really expect us to believe that? Tommy frowned.
Well according to the legend that’s what happened. not only was he accused of murdering his wife, it’s also been said that when they found her they only found her body. To this day no one has ever found her head.
Oh wow!
Katie’s husband was an old sea captain. according to the legend, he killed her then set sail and never returned. some even say that he wasn’t even on board the ship, that he just vanished into thin air.
But wouldn’t his crew notice if he was on the ship or not? Cookie asked.
That’s a mystery that no one has been able to solve for hundreds of years. Some say that a couple of days out to sea he went crazy and started killing off his crew and those who did survive vowed never to speak of what really happened, Daisy explained. all any one knows for sure is that for a hundred years the body of Katie still stands on her balcony, staring out to sea, waiting for him to return so not only can she get her revenge but be united with her missing head.
But why did he kill her? Vicky asked.
Jealously, some say that she was in love with someone else and was about to leave him and he somehow found out about it.
Oh wow! Where did they live? Cookie asked.
Just across the bay, Daisy answered. it’s been around for a hundred years. I’m surprised that it hasn’t been tore down.
Did the police ever investigate her disappearance? Vicky asked.
I suppose, but I guess they never found anything, Daisy shrugged.
Hey, did they check in the basement? that’s the perfect place to hide a body! Sammy laughed.
I’m— A roll of thunder interrupted Daisy. Oh great! I guess we better hurry back before we get caught in the rain.
The next morning they woke up to the smell of pancakes coming from the kitchen. Good morning kids! Daisy’s uncle smiled. who wants some extra gooey pancakes this morning?
I do! I’m starving! Tommy cried.
Daisy rolled her eyes and smirked, You’re always starving!
Now, now there’s plenty to go round. I’m sorry that I couldn’t make it to the picnic last night, but I had to work late. how was it? Daisy’s uncle asked.
It was great, until it started raining, Vicky answered.
Yah, and Daisy told us all about the story of Katie Batty, Cookie added.
Katie Batty? Daisy’s uncle asked.
You know, Katie, her husband supposedly murdered her and her head is missing, Cookie began.
Oh that Katie Batty! Her uncle laughed. that was my favorite urban legend growing up.
Huh? You mean it’s just a made up story? Cookie pouted.
Well I don’t know, but I'd love to believe it’s true, he smiled. so what do you kids have planned for today?
Well us girls are going shopping with aunt Dottie, Daisy answered.
And are you boys going with them?
Who us? Nah, we’re just going to hang out by the lake until they come back. Then me and Sammy have a little adventure planned for all of us to go on, Tommy proudly smiled.
We do? Sammy frowned. Tommy poked Sammy in the ribs and answered back, Yah Sammy we do.
Okay Tommy, what’s this big adventure that you’ve planned for us? Daisy asked when they returned from their shopping trip.
I’ve the perfect idea. not only are we going to solve the Katie Batty mystery, but we’re also going to find her missing head, Tommy stated.
Oh is that all? what, after we finish solving the mystery of your missing brain!? Daisy smirked.
Oh yeah, right, us? What makes you think that we can solve it after all these years? Vicky added.
Hey we always do catch our man! Tommy laughed. and Daisy, as funny as that was, last night when everyone went to sleep I did a little more research on Katie Batty. It seems that every year a coward flocks to the island in hopes of seeing or solving her mystery.
So? Sammy shrugged.
So I was thinking that we can sneak in and search the place until we find her head, Tommy started to explain.
Oh boy, now I really know that you've lost your mind Tommy. what makes you think we’re really going to find something that may or not be just made up? Daisy began. and since when did you start believing in ghost stories?
I don’t, but what if it’s not just a stupid ghost story? What if it’s really true and we were the kids who solved it? just think of all the cases we’d get offered after that. It’d be the best thing ever, he explained.
And you really believe that this dumb idea of yours is really going to work? Sammy frowned.
Yah why not? No doubt about it the worst thing that can happen is that we come up empty handed, Tommy shrugged. so what do guys say, are you in?
After talking it over for a few more minutes they all decided that it was worth a shot.
The house stood in total darkness except for a dim light that was coming out from inside the main hall. And before they entered, Vicky pointed to a sign that hung by the window that read: WHEN YOU ENTER THE BATTY HOUSE YOUR LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!
Okay, everyone has their flashlight with them right? Tommy asked, as soon as they entered the house. Before he could close the door behind him Sammy stopped him. Dude what now?
Look over there, Sammy pointed over towards some over grown trees that were by the walkway.
Look at what, I don’t see anything? Tommy frowned.
I could’ve sworn that I just saw someone standing by those trees staring at us, Sammy answered.
Sammy, stop being such a wimp, there’s no one there, now come on, it's now or never, Tommy frowned.
Shortly afterwards they were walking up some creaking stairs that lead up to Katie’s bed room.
Hey check it out. for a bed that’s more than a hundred years old it still has some spring to it! Tommy laughed as he and Sammy began jumping on the bed.
Would you two cut it out! We didn’t come here to jump on beds. this was your dumb idea and if you’re not going to start taking it seriously then we’re out of here, Daisy scowled at them. And before any of them could answer a voice that sounded a lot like laughter floated into the room.
Umm, please tell me that you guys just heard that, Sammy mumbled.
Yah it sounded like it came from outside the hall, Cookie answered him.
Is it me or did it suddenly get very cold in here? Daisy added.
Yah, it feels like someone just opened a window or something. I think we should just go and try this some other time. I’m getting a very creepy feeling about this whole thing, Vicky stated.
They were just about to reach the driveway when an older looking penguin stepped out of the bushes and cried, I see that I’m not the only one who decided to do their own night exploring?
Oh hi, umm, we didn’t see you standing there, Cookie began. it’s not like we were going to steal anything, we just wanted a better look.
So did you meet them yet? The penguin interrupted her.
Meet who? Cookie asked.
The ghosts of the Batty house? isn’t that what you kids were looking for in there?
Umm, well yah, kind of, they shrugged.
Well if ghosts are what you kids want to see, why don’t I show you where they hide at? the penguin laughed.
Huh? What, you know where they are, and the next thing you’re going to say is you also know where her head is buried right? Tommy frowned.
No offense lady, but it’s getting kind of late and I think we’ve had our share of ghost haunting for the night, Sammy added.
Nonsense, the night is still young my friends, now let’s begin, times wasting and we mustn’t keep them waiting, the penguin half smirked.
A few minutes later they were back at the house. So are you kids sure you are truly ready to see some real ghosts? the penguin asked again.
Yah sure, can hardly wait, Sammy mumbled.
Okay then follow me.
They slowly made their way through the main hall and towards the kitchen. The penguin walked over to the far wall next to the stove and pointed to a big hole that was next to it.
So what? What’s so scary bout a hole next to a kitchen stove? Tommy frowned.
It’s not just a hole, it's part of a dumb waiter. watch, the penguin smiled, as she reached inside and started pulling on the rope. This is how they use to deliver the dinner trays to the upper floors long ago, she started to explain.
Oh cool!
Well it wasn’t so cool for the last group of kids who were in here. one of them decided it would be funny to scare his other friend. So he dared him to go upstairs and wait in the room alone for ten minutes. Of course the kid agreed since he didn’t want to appear to be chicken in front of his friends. so while he was upstairs the kid who dared him was in here with his other two friends. he then went inside the dumb waiter and had the other two pull him up. But something went terribly wrong. the dumb waiter got stuck inbetween floors. The kids kept pulling on the rope until it suddenly came crashing down, but instead of their friend still being in one piece the only thing that was in there was his head.
Oh please, do you really expect us to believe that really happened? Tommy smirked.
Maybe I can’t tell you what to believe, but I’m only sharing what I know to have happened, the penguin shrugged. She suddenly walked over to the door and locked it.
Hey what you think you’re doing, why are you locking the door? Cookie frowned. I’m sorry kids but I’m afraid I’ve told you all a little white lie to get you in here. You see the real reason that you’re here is cause of my true name which is Katie Batty.
What! If this is a joke I don’t think it’s very funny! Daisy cried out.
Oh no it’s not a joke—
Whoa, whoa wait a second, you’re telling us that you’re Katie Batty? yah right. Dude, if you were really her, besides looking good for a ghost you also have a good head on your shoulders, Tommy interrupted, frowning.
But this isn’t my head. this isn’t even my real body, I just borrowed it. here let me show you. The penguin then pressed her hands against her head and tugged on it until it popped off, then quickly put it back in its place again. So ladies, who is going to be the lucky one and let me borrow her body? I promise to return it as soon as I’m done with it and make it as painless as I can, she smiled.
What! Are you completely nuts! You can’t just go round borrowing bodies! Katie there’s no way that one of us is just going to let you do that to any one of us! Vicky cried out.
I know, why don’t we just help you look for your real head instead of taking one of ours, Cookie suddenly interrupted. I know we can find it.
Ha! I‘ve spent more than a hundred years searching every inch of every room looking for it. What makes you think you kids can find it now? it looks like I’m going to have to choose for you on which body it is that I take over. And I think I‘ll take yours, Cookie! The penguin laughed evilly. She floated closer with her hands stretched out towards Cookie, who leaned against one of the far walls. She pressed so hard against the wall that it caved in, exposing a secret tunnel on the other side of it.
Hey! Quick everyone, go into the tunnel, this can be our only chance! Tommy cried out.
A few minutes later they were running through a long dirt passageway tunnel.
Do you think she’s following us? Daisy asked.
Who cares! Just keep running. this tunnel has to lead us some place. hopefully outside and far away from this house! Vicky answered.
Yah sorry, Vicky, guess again, Cookie suddenly cried out.
Oh great! Who builds a secret tunnel that only leads to a brick wall!? Sammy frowned.
Hey maybe this wall is like the one in the kitchen. maybe if we push against it hard enough it will break through, Tommy stated.
They quickly started pushing against the brick wall when they heard the penguin coming towards them. I don’t think this going to work maybe we should look for another way out, Sammy whined.
Dude do you see another way out?! No, so shut up and keep pushing! Tommy scowled at him. A few seconds later the wall broke through exposing a secret small room. They all looked inside of it with stunned and confused looks on their faces. Lying on the floor was the missing head of Katie Batty.
I don’t believe it! We actually found it! Tommy cried out happily. And before any of them could answer him the room suddenly got very cold as a ghostly figure floated through the wall picked up the head and placed it on her headless body. She shyly turned and looked at the gang, giving them a whispered thank you. she then disappeared into thin air.
After a confused silence Cookie turned towards the penguin and growled,
You ain’t Katie Batty! Who are you? And why did you lie to us into believing that you were!?
I’m so sorry I just wanted--- And before the penguin could continue a loud angry voice yelled out from behind them, Kathy! There you are! I’ve been looking all over for you! How many times do I have to tell you to stop sneaking in here, this isn’t a safe place to play in!
Kathy? Can someone please tell us what’s going on around here? Tommy asked.
That’s what I’d like to know. what are you kids doing in here? You kids shouldn’t be playing in here, the older penguin frowned.
Oh umm, we weren’t playing, I mean, umm, we were just exploring and then we bumped into Kathy who asked if we wanted to see some real ghosts, Sammy began.
Kathy! How many times do I have to tell you not to go and pretend to be Katie Batty and scaring the neighborhood kids? The older penguin scowled at her.
But mom I didn’t! I mean, I was, but then we found it! We actually found Katie’s head! It was in this room and then she came out of the wall and took it, Kathy began crying out.
That’s enough young lady! The story of Katie Batty is just that, a story, there’s no such thing as ghosts! Her mother interrupted.
But I’m not lying! We really did see Katie Batty! The story is true!
Later that night they were walking back to Daisy’s uncle beach house.
Someone please tell me that really did happened, Daisy asked them.
Yah it really did happen. unless we all just had the same dream, which I highly doubt. it really did happen. We actually solved the mystery of Katie Batty's ghost, Vicky smiled.
So Tommy, what do you say now? do you still believe that there’s no such things as ghosts or did Katie Batty make a believer out of you? Sammy laughed.
I don’t know what to believe. all I know is that I told you guys, didn’t I!? Ghost or no ghost, we always do catch our man! Tommy laughed back.
