Whisper Of A Barn Owl
Born 1997, M, from Melcher-Dallas, Iowa, United StatesThe sun had long set, casting dark shadows across the forest floor, when Eira decided to venture into the woods alone. Her parents had always warned her about the dangers of wandering alone at night, but her curiosity was too strong to resist. She had always been fascinated by what lurked within the dense woods. She stepped carefully, her eyes scanning the landscape and her ears listening for any sound that may break the unnatural silence.
The crunching of leaves beneath her boots echoed in the quietness of the night as she made her way deeper into the woods. The only light came from the full moon that illuminated patches of the forest floor through the whispering leaves of the trees. The air was moist, with a hint of soil and wildflowers. Eira inhaled deeply, closing her eyes as she let the cool breeze brush against her face.
As she walked, she began to hear a gentle hooting sound, growing louder and clearer with every step. She followed the sound, coming to a clearing in the woods. In the center of the clearing was an old, abandoned barn. The hooting came from the rafters, where a barn owl sat perched, peering down at her with piercing golden eyes. The owl tilted its head, studying her silently.
Eira approached the barn with caution. The owl continued to stare at her, its eyes seeming to bore into her very soul. As she reached the entrance of the barn, she felt a sudden chill that caused her to shiver. She hesitated, unsure if she should continue. But something inside her urged her on, beckoning her to enter.
Stepping inside the barn, Eira felt the coolness of the air envelop her. It was quiet, except for the soft flapping of the owl's wings as it followed her in. She looked up and saw the owl watching her, still silent but for the occasional hoot. Its feathers seemed to glow in the pale light, as if it possessed some sort of magic.
Suddenly, Eira heard a faint whisper that seemed to echo through the barn. The whisper was gentle, and it filled her with a feeling of peace and warmth. She tried to make out what the whisper was saying, but it was too soft to decipher. Again, the whisper came, this time a little louder, but still barely audible.
Eira began to realize that the barn owl was not the source of the whispers, but that it was coming from deep within the barn itself. Mesmerized, she followed the whispers, walking toward the back of the barn. As she neared the end, the whispers grew stronger, louder, and more distinct. It was then that she saw a faint light coming from a small crevice in the wall.
She approached the crevice, peering inside to see what lay beyond. The whispers had grown into a symphony of sounds, each voice distinct and beautiful. Eira couldn't make sense of it all. She brushed her hand against the wall, and suddenly a warm glow began to fill the small room behind the crevice. The energy was overwhelming, like nothing she'd ever felt before.
Then, as suddenly as it had all begun, it stopped. The whispers stopped, the glow faded, and Eira was left alone in the barn once more. She knew that she had experienced something rare, something magical, but she also knew that she could never explain it to anyone else.
She left the barn, stepping back outside into the cool night air. The owl still perched in the rafters, watching her as she made her way back home. Eira couldn't shake the feeling of warmth and joy that had filled her very being while in the barn. It was like the whispers had given her a gift, a gift of peace, and she knew that she would always be grateful for that beautiful moment beneath the whisper of a barn owl.
