Daisy Chain
Born 1947, M, from Oceanside, United StatesDaisy Chain
Daisy is the name of our neighbor’s dog. Mom said she’d watch Daisy for a few days while her owner, Mrs. Knight, went to a family reunion. Right away, I noticed Daisy had a kind of funny habit. She would follow mom around our apartment like she was attached to her by an invisible chain.
If mom sat on the couch to watch TV, Daisy would jump up and lay her head in mom’s lap. If mom needed to use the bathroom, Daisy would wait outside the closed door until mom came out. And when mom sat down to eat, Daisy would sit and watch her, as if she expected mom to give her some of her food. Daisy would even sometimes follow me around. That’s one of the reasons I started thinking of calling her Daisy Chain and not just Daisy.
And then Daisy Chain’s owner showed up to get her. Right away, I found myself missing our doggy shadow. I guess she missed mom and I, too. Because a couple of days later, when I opened our front door to take out the bag of garbage mom had asked me to put in the dumpster, I found Daisy squatting on our front stoop.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, as Daisy got up, and without hesitating, strolled into our apartment like she belonged there.
After giving Daisy a couple of doggy treats, mom called Mrs. Knight to let her know her dog was at our house.
When Mrs. Knight showed up to get Daisy, she told us that, when Daisy went out to do her doggy business, she always came right back in. “This was the first time she ever did this.”
But it wasn’t going to be the last. Daisy showed up on our doorstep a few more times. Mom always gave her a doggy treat before calling Mrs. Knight.
But then Mrs. Knight told us she was going to have to move. She was going to live with her mother who needed help because she had gotten really sick. The problem was her mother was allergic to dogs. That’s why she asked mom if she would like to become Daisy’s new owner.
“Can we, mom, can we?”
Looking at me while biting her lip in thought, she finally said yes.
“Wahoo!”
It took a couple of months for Daisy to finally come and live with us. Even before she showed up, mom bought her a new doggy bed, while I used some of my allowance to buy her a couple of chew toys. But the best part about having Daisy is, at night, while I sleep, Daisy sleeps on the foot of my bed. I love it!
There is one problem, though. She snores really loud!
